  • An increase in the cost of sewer hookup fees is also part of the sanitation rate hike according to The Signal. Jim Holt talked to the owner of Salt Creek Grille who said that he probably wouldn’t be able to open in Santa Clarita under the new proposed hookup fee charge, which would be an eye-popping $300,000 in the case of a restaurant SIGNAL
  • A 2 year old girl who was found floating in family spa in Valencia was revived by family members and airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles according to KHTS. When Sheriff’s Deputies arrived the girl was breathing and crying so that’s a good sign I suppose
  • COC students ponder green mobility options for Valencia campus. SIGNAL. Am I to understand that some COC lazy asses students actually drive their cars from one parking lot to another, just to avoid walking from one side of campus to the other?
  • Benz Road : The Sequel: TimBen Boydston is helping neighbors of Linda Vista Street in Canyon Country  organize in order to possibly gate the public street which residents in the area say is being used as a cut-through by drivers in the area. The City Council will look at th matter on July 13. SIGNAL
  • The US Economy lost 125,000 jobs in June. Some 225,000 Census workers finished their work and were discharged, so that accounts for some of the loss. Private sector businesses only hired 83,000 people during the month. The unemployment rate fell to 9.5% LA TIMES

  • City of Santa Clarita seeks first time home buyers for program SIGNAL
  • Buck McKeon blasted President Obama’s immigration speech yesterday, saying it amounted to amnesty for illegal immigrants. He also says the number of illegal immigrants in the US is 20 million + when virtually every other source says it is about 11 million. Obama backs Republican Lindsey Graham’s plan which would require “illegal immigrants who wish to remain in the country… to admit they broke the law and pay fines and back taxes, pass background checks and prove that they can speak English before going to the back of the line of those seeking permanent legal residency.” MCKEON PR, NY TIMES

  • Good question: “Since a high percentage of the salt is introduced by users upstream from us, shouldn’t they also be made to pay their fare share?” asks LTE WRITER
  • Newhall Coffee Shop Fail: I concur with Lady Ducayne, the new Newhall Coffee Shop shop is nice, but it’s only open from 6 am to 2pm so I can’t actually review it for you.  I don’t get it. This neighborhood empties out during the day. Much of the coffee action is in the evening in Newhall, but we can’t go there if it’s closed.
  • Good sports weekend: Germany takes on Argentina tomorrow in the World Cup and the Tour de France begins as well.
  • City Briefs and Mag of SCV have lists of 4th of July Events. Happy Independence Day!

    Yeah, I understand and have witnessed the chaos of this intersection……but gating it? Seems like such a caveman response. Then again, most of these cut through commuters huff donkey dong and threaten the lives of kids just trying to play some hoops or what not on a summer evening. At least make the gate pleasing to the eye, or else out comes the bad graffiti. Why not just install an obstacle course and charge admission to watch these “cutters” make it through?

    No mention of the Castaic tow truck driver who is being held on kidnapping charges? I thought that was a very interesting story on the front page of today’s Signal. He’s been held for over two weeks (bail set at $1 mil.) and the LASD won’t release any information about the case. http://www.the-signal.com/section/36/article/30594/

    I too was surprised that this article was not mentioned, ReaderMama. This to me is a very interesting case. This man has been held for 2 weeks on very serious charges, yet the sheriffs department has not interviewed any neighbors or the wife? Why the secrecy? They have so many charges against him, it seems as if it should be a pretty easy case. Who was the victim(s)? Why was it not brought to the publics attention until now, when Johnny Prides charges were made public as soon as he was arrested? I hope the Signal follows this story to the end and doesn’t leave it at this; too many unanswered questions.

    Re the American food section: I didn’t see peanut butter. That is what I would miss. The cake mix seems odd. I would think cake would be readily available in Germany.

    Water – Why are people content to subsidize businesses in the SCV? If a hookup fee is $300k for a restaurant, that’s the cost. Either open or don’t. Much like the business licenses that the SCV subsidizes, why? These are probably the same business owners who think it’s okay to park their business vehicles in front of their homes so that the rest of us have to look at ugly advertising. If you can afford to pay $100k for a truck, you can afford a commercial parking lot to put it when it’s not being used. Believe me, I am not going to call you for painting/ac/roofing/truck bed liners/delivery or anything else when I have to look at your advertising in a residential neighborhood.

    The people that complain on this blog about subsidizing business are usually the same people that moan about the chain restaurants in this valley. Most mom n pops don’t have the capital to open a restaurant in a prime SCV location. So we end up with BJ’s, Olive Garden etc. At least we have pazookies. As far as vehicles with advertisements on them, give these guys a break! Owning a small business is not easy, they’re just trying to make a living.

    “Owning a small business is not easy, they’re just trying to make a living.” Well Scott, they seem to be doing just fine with multiple vehicles parked in front of their house, let alone all of the commercial ones. Commercial vehicles should be in a commercial zone, not a residential one.

    I have no problem with reasonable-sized vehicles used by small businesses being parked in driveways or on the street, with or without advertising. People have to make a living and I support their efforts to do so. They pay taxes just like the rest of us do. Forcing them to buy a second vehicle to commute to and from a commercial lot where their business vehicle is parked is pretty ridiculous. Now if someone has a fleet of vehicles and they are hogging all the parking in a neighborhood, then I can see why people would complain.

    Had a big rig parking in our residential area. Took over six months to get action, despite it CLEARLY vioilating county code and the CC&Rs. Finally he moved out, so the truck is gone, problem solved. Local law enforcement was no help inthis case, with varying claims of authority between CGP, COunty, City, code enforcement, etc. This crap simply does not belong in a residential area. It starts with the small truck, and graduates to this nonsense. Nip it in the bud. Not that I’m actually endorsing vandalism or anything…

Reader mama, obviously you don’t know what people I’m talking about, they have numerous vehicles parked in front of their home, no one has forced them to buy anything. They just don’t want to park their commercial vehicles where they belong. Much like the neighbors with the RVs and boats in front of their houses.

    $300K on top of the other capital required along with overhead, employees, insurance, inspections, permits, along with perhaps a ‘dreaded’ company vehicle BEFORE an owner (or owners) even can see a dime for themselves in profit is a bit steep in light of the controversy of this whole water thing. It’s hard enough to be in business, much less STAY in business these days. People complain about government intervention (is this not a form of government intervention?) affecting free enterprise while others make flip statements like “Either open or don’t.” AC/roofing and other service oriented businesses are usually on call 24/7. If you had an emergency would you rather wait an extra 30 minutes while the service person drove to his commercial parking lot in the middle of the night to get the company vehicle? Sounds like SOMEONE has a case of the “gripey pants”.

    You’re mixing apple with oranges. Are we sure an AC/heating company will have to pay 300K? I think not. Large water users should pay more. If the cost of their service need go up to cover the cost, so be it. Additionally, they will all right off the cost as an operating expense, come tax time. Let’s not forget the freebies the enterprise zone creates for busniess, at the expense of others. Question: How much should the owner of a small business make as personal income each year?

    I was responding to both issues in the above post regarding the flip comment to Salt Creek IE “Either open or don’t”, and addressed the second paragraph separately regarding company vehicles parked on residential streets. I have no idea where Salt Creek came up with the $300K assessment, but that’s 1/3 of a million dollars that adds to overhead and the bottom line. So, according to them, BEFORE they even begin to build a restaurant they’re going to be charged $300K hookup fee. That’s a lot of $$ in startup costs when trying to obtain a business loan. The vehicle issue is completely separate. You might want to read the post I was replying to. As for how much the owner of a small business should make in a year? Why does that even matter? As the owner of a small business I will tell you that when the math is all done, I make relatively little in personal income compared to the time I put into my work and my overhead costs, and I’ll bet I can speak for a lot of us who are in the same boat. It takes years for most business owners to actually make any real money at what they do, and why shouldn’t the sky be the limit when they’ve put so much of their life blood, time and energy into their dream as long as they are providing a valuable product or service to the community at large? Are you suggesting there should be a limit to what small business owners should make? Those of us who are in business do it pretty much for the same reason, to be in control of our destiny and to embolden that good old American dream of freedom and liberty. Plus, it is nice to work in my pajamas if I want to!

    Yeah, and I’ll bet you are the same folks who get livid at the thought of day laborers standing on the streets of the SCV. What’s the difference? They’re just poor people trying to make a living – right?

    Re.the Newhall Coffee Shop’s hours- It makes you wonder if anyone ever writes a business plan or does market research prior to opening? There are a host of other places to get coffee, it’s not like we have shortage of places. There is a 7-11 just a few doors down, not to mention Yum Yum donuts and Starbuxx too. It better be a really special cup of coffee at a good price, great service, and the almighty Convenient!!!

    Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in her weekly legislative briefing Thursday that nothing is more effective at creating jobs than issuing unemployment checks to people out of work. Seriously. Normally here I would make some kind of snarky reference to Pelosi’s IQ; probably equating it to some sort of inanimate object like a swim fin or rubber dog toy, but that’s not really necessary here, so I won’t. (Hoping my new bitch has a comment)

    There was a big uproar when the street first opened about Linda Vista residents not wanting people to use it to get to Sierra Highway. I think that they might have gotten speed bumps put in to address concerns if I remember correctly. It seems very elitist to think that a public street shouldn’t be used by the public! I’ve never heard of streets going from public to private. Placerita Canyon was similar but that already was private and the residents wanted the city to take care of it and not allow through traffic…sort of a “have your cake and eat it too” attitude I thought but since they kept it private who could argue. I don’t remember what the situation was with Calgrove Blvd but I assume it was private since they put up a gate? In any case, you would think a city with traffic issues would use some common sense! Why don’t we just close off every street in Santa Clarita that is used as an alternate thoroughfare? TimBen my friend, you’re off your rocker on this one.
