  • The City of Santa Clarita sounds upset and a bit hurt over the fact that the California High Speed Rail line will pass through but not have a stop in the SCV, a fact we’ve known about for years. Ken Pulskamp says the multi-billion high speed rail project, which could whisk train riders north at 200+ mph in the future, would impact the Disney Studios at the Ranch project, CEMEX, and the City’s open space areas. The Council will meet with HSR authorities tonight in a special study session SIGNAL, AGENDA
  • And so the library takeover begins: On Friday the City notified the County of its intention to withdraw from the COLA library system, and Gail Ortiz says the city will now citizen’s advisory committee so that the public can determine how the new City libraries shape up. That ticked off at least one COLA supporter: “That committee should have been formed prior to the public hearing. “There was no public discussion prior to the public hearing.” The city will also start meeting with its new contractor, LSSI of Maryland SIGNAL
  • Speaking of the libraries, I’ve never seen so many LTE writers agree on any one subject. Letter after letter opposing the takeover continues to pour into the Signal LTE SECTION
  • The getaway driving mother of that 27 year old burglary suspect who was shot by Canyon Country resident Nadine Teter four years ago is being released from prison because she has cancer and only has about six months to live. Teter is outraged about the release and says the October 2006 attempted home invasion robbery -in which she pulled out a gun and shot the suspect three times as he tried to enter her home- still haunts her SIGNAL, ORIGINAL STORY
  • 20 year old burglary suspect in Sheriff’s Station interview room decides to leave; Deputies then notice white chalky substance on the floor of the room and realize he managed to lift himself up into the ceiling. He was caught sometime later trying to run away in the station. For his creative effort at escaping, he’s been awarded time in a jail complex in downtown LA. SIGNAL, LA TIMES
  • Planning Commission to consider letting Old Town Newhall businesses display merchandise on sidewalks SIGNAL
  • Possible Santa Clarita Transit strike: don’t miss my exclusive report here
  • College of the Canyons has won a $3 million grant to stand up a new renewable energy program that will train students in renewable energy industry technology. SIGNAL
  • Since cutting its budget some $128 million in the last year, 911 response times by the Sheriff’s Department have slowed significantly, reports the LA TIMES
  • Wow: A Chinese school that enrolled only 20 students when it opened last year now has 200 students, the Signal says. The SCV Chinese School aims to teach children Chinese language and culture and is partnering with other SCV schools like the new Albert Einstein Academy SIGNAL
  • A new state law that requires school volunteers to have a background check will cost parents who wish to volunteer about $60. The fee will go to the FBI, not the Hart District SIGNAL
  • New Leash on Life dog rescue opens kennel that will support its rescue business SIGNAL
  • Buck McKeon is doing everything in his power to thwart & frustrate the will of Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who wants to close a redundant and costly special military division MAGAZINE
  • Assemblyman Cameron Smyth wants salary information posted for employees at all levels of government, including the State Legislature MAG
  • Myers coins a new SCV-only term: “Ender Math” is the mathematic discipline in which you claim the support of people who you don’t know, people who don’t even bother to make their opinion known.   • Rather than sitting in pews passively, that new Bridgeport “Real Life” church spent Sunday morning delivering service to the community EXAMINER
  • Chris Lim, one of the leaders of the local tea party movement, doesn’t like Labor Day because it was created with the support of unions back in the 19th Century. He’d rather have an Employer & Entrepreneur Day SCV TEA PARTY
  • The Signal says it supports a Democratic lawmaker’s efforts to fix the broken laws that have lead to our chloride problem SIGNAL

    Seems to me Ender Math is no different than Obama Math. Stimulus and Healthcare bills were approved without a majority approval. What is the difference? I guess when having something shoved down your throat that you don’t agree with, it is a serious matter?

    Ha! The apt example would be to say President Obama claimed overwhelming support for legislation that didn’t have said report. However, the President didn’t do that- Ender did. I guess that’s why you couldn’t make a fitting analogy. That said, shouldn’t you be warning other tinfoil hats about death panels or something?

    Dear Mr. Lim, I don’t know what history books you read, but Labor Day was enacted as a national holiday on June 28th, 1894, not in 1884 as you suggest. Yes, it was during the Cleveland administration, but during his second term, and well after the State of Oregon enacted Labor Day as state law in 1887, followed by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. In fact, Grover Cleveland was not even president in 1884 as he did not take office for his first term until March, 1885. Yes, Labor Day began at at the suggestion of a few unions, so you got that point right. However there is nothing that I can find that the bill was ‘rushed’ through congress to appease those unions, unless by ‘rush’ you mean it took 12 years AFTER the first unofficial Labor Day celebrations began in 1882. Lastly, did you know Glenn Beck belongs to a few unions (SAG/AFTRA) which pays his salary and takes care of his retirement and health care? I wonder if he sent them a thank you letter for allowing him to celebrate his day off. Thanks for revising history in keeping with Tea Party policy to fit whatever your doctrine dictates.

    While we’re on that subject, might I add that the first president to intervene and help settle a strike between workers and management was none other than that good old Republican Teddy Roosevelt; who also progressively initiated the national park system, anti-trust laws, and the Panama Canal?

    A little late. The Citizens Advisory Committee should have been formed before the takeover decision was made.

    I don’t think this came out like I wanted it to – I meant to question the way this sentence is written. It sounds like it is this huge complicated issue that has to have a plan devised. We will see who makes up the advisory committee………. I’m not holding my breath that it might actually be made up of knowledgeable, well-informed and concerned librarians and library patrons that have a vested interest in our new library system.

    I am wondering if the City will allow County residents to be on this “Citizens Advisory Committee”. In municipal law think, there’s a difference. Like when you sue the City the first line of the pleading is “Plaintiffs are residents, taxpayers and citizens of the City of Santa Clarita”.

    The Tea Party says ” …became a federal holiday two years later when President Grover Cleveland and his congress rushed it into law in just 6 days to appease (You guessed it) the labor union after a workers union strike turned ugly in Pullman, Illinois.” 13 strikers were killed while 57 were wounded! The tea party is about as useful as the know nothings.

    Brian: I can pretty much guarantee you that NO ONE who spoke out against the COLA takeover voted for the incumbents last April, but that is the tragedy of local politics and the power of incumbency in our little corner of the world. In the 23 year history of the City only TWO council incumbents have lost their seats. Dennis Koontz, a founding council member who had the misfortune of having an EX-wife with a Day Care business who got in the press for hiring a child molester that was all over local news during the election season, and Jill Klajic who lost after development and business interests recruited and funded a well known candidate (Clyde Smyth, retired Hart District Superintendent) who then won by a WHOPPING 16 votes. Consider also that during this last election Frank Ferry, who reliable sources told me did not want to stand and consented only after being told he would have to do NOTHING to retain his seat, held it by 32 votes over David Gauny who tried EVERYTHING to swing the election his way. The problem is the immutable math of local elections. Of the 17% that vote 7% hate the incumbents, 6% love them, and 4% know nothing about local matters but recognize a civic duty to vote and do so at the rate of 3 out of 4 for the incumbents, giving them their 9% to 8% edge. If you think it seems like a lot of people don’t like the incumbents it is because a fairly clear majority of those engaged DON’T.

    And most importantly, remember that the 83% who don’t show up to vote in our local elections ALL support Laurie Ender. Just ask her. Enjoyed the column on Ender Math, Tim.

    Nadine is a brave lady who defended herself against a gangbanger who tried to burglarize her home. Now it seems the justice department is more concerned with the criminals than the victim. This is outrageous and clearly demonstrates why we need to be ever vigilant and prepared to defend ourselves.

    Nadine Teter put 3 bullets in the would-be burglar and he is serving out his time. He was unarmed and Teter suffered no physical harm. I can’t get real excited about the fact that the woman who drove the getaway car and is now dying of cancer is getting out of jail early. It will probably save the state a few bucks . . . .

    Remember too that she did not seem to understand the concept of “getaway” driver since she flagged down the Deputy responding to the call to get medical attention for her shot up son.

    These “armed citizens” are not good advertisements for the NRA. I thought it was supposed to be extremely empowering to defend oneself utilizing their second amendment rights, yet this victims seem to be as f’ed up as anybody.

    Tim I am not sure what you are trying to say. Many of today’s criminals know how to use the system. In this case, the getaway driver was the gangbanger’s mother, who had no problem breaking the law when she wanted too and using the law when she needed help. I do not think for one minute that she did not know what she was doing when she flagged down the Sherriff’s car. It is very empowering to have the ability to defend yourself. At the same time, it is a very emotional experience if you actually have to do it. Be very thankful you have not been in that situation yourself. I know I am.

    @jeff – Your brief is slightly askew. The Planning Commission is definitely looking at the inclusion of outdoor displays of merchandise this evening, however, it is not just for Old Town Newhall and basically includes only one business at this time. The other item the DOES cover Old Town Newhall is the Outdoor Dining amendment which we all are excited about. The unfortunate part about it is the lack of available restaurants and spaces to set up the outdoor dining. But if the amendment goes through maybe it will entice others to follow.

    The reason why the HSR train will not stop in SCV is because of the lack of location for a station. The rail line will parallel the 14, but travel from Sylmar to Via Princessa in a tunnel. The Authority only identified 2 potential station locations in its report, one by Sand Canyon, and one across the Santa Clara River from Shadow Pines. Both locations were unsuitable for a rail station, so they were forced to abandon having a station in SCV.

    Reader Mama, I wasn’t aware that the profession of “CAREER CRIMINAL” offers medical insurance, disability or a retirement plan, but thank you very much for bringing that to our attention. Perhaps I should consider a career change. Yes, that is Cynthia Brandon’s profession she has a criminal record that dates so far back…. we were not even a city yet and her career was well on it’s way. Be thankful you were not one of her victims.
