Bill Reynolds aka NotaFerryFan’s Mental Map of SCV

Is there a grumpier old man in this town of grumpy old men than Bill Reynolds, aka NotaFerryFan, aka Children’s Swim Team hater? From his perch way up Valencia Summit way, he seemingly looks down on all of us. But he reserves special hate for your’s truly, just because I choose to live in the high density urban hellscape that is Newhall:

This silly anecdotal report comes from 30′s something liberal who resides in a high density condo complex on the wrong side of the tracks within the bowels of Newhall. Very amusing…

He shouldn’t be amused. He should be frightened. Not only am I a 30s something liberal with a popular blog and a fresh 40 under Forty award (badge of legitimacy, holla!), but my high density condo complex and my advocacy of the high density lifestyle takes place right on the very border of Valencia 91355. The bowels of Newhall? Ha! I’m actually within throwing distance of Awesometown across the DMZ that is Lyons Avenue. I’m a lot closer than you think and I aim to disrupt.

This all got me thinking though. How do people like Reynolds, Steve Lunetta (“Tough, Gang-infested Newhall,“) and Roger Gitlin (“most of you will never want to visit Old Town Newhall”)  mentally map out the dimensions and borders of communities in the SCV? Like where does Good SCV end and Bad, Urban, High Density, Mexican SCV begin?

To find out, my wife and I independently imagined ourselves as Bill Reynolds. We asked ourselves where Bill Reynolds might feel safe, where he might feel threatened and uneasy, and what parts of  the central valley he associates with bad things. Then we took to reliable standby MS Paint to map it out. Here are our results:

My wife's renderig. Notice bowel-shaped Newhall, the new Newhall library, and the railroad tracks and the encroachment of Mexicans into Awesometown thanks to the Vallarta. OMG Newhall is so dense; Bill Reynolds likely sees everything South of Lyons as Mexican, and especially everything across the railroad tracks (even Placerita Canyon makes him feel unsafe)

My map:

You may think Newhall has lots of diverse housing options, from sprawling ranch houses with horse parking to condominiums and everything in between, but according to Bill Reynolds, it's all high density urban up in the 91321. Interesting that my wife and I both noticed the encroachment of Vallarta into safe, Valencia territory. This is the marquee event of the last five years in the relationship between the communities, and it figures high in Bill Reynold's threat assessment for Newhall.

We had so much fun doing this we’ve decided to open it up to you, our loyal readers. Here’s how: 1) Open Microsoft Paint (or your Mac-based equivalent) and map out how you think Bill Reynolds views some or all of the SCV (alternatively it can be your own mental map or the mental map of some other public figure). 2) Save your image and email it to jeff at scvtalk.com. We’ll review and post. If we get a few submissions, we might have a more accurate picture of how Bill Reynolds and the rest of the Grumpy Old Man Corps of the SCV think.

Jeff – you guys are hilarious – I love this – Next time I need a map drawn to my house in NEWHALL – I’ll call on you and your wife. If I have time tonight I will give map drawing a try myself………think I’ll include all the TV and movie filming that goes on over here in the bowels of Newhall…………… And wanted to know why I can’t access your link from yesterday (the City Agenda Report CREATION OF CITIZENS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE) The link doesn’t work anymore – City says Sorry! Is that a normal happening after the Council meeting has passed?
  3. OlenkaOctober 12, 2010 at 9:26 am
“Get off my lawn!” = hilarity
  4. dorothymantoothOctober 12, 2010 at 9:32 am
I just laughed out loud at my desk. You are too funny! They sell Corona in a can at Vallarta. If that’s not a selling point, I’m not sure what is!
  5. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 9:36 am
Gosh, I feel honored… Master Blogger Jeffrey. Obviously I have succeeded in getting under your thin skin, Master Blogger. OMG I’m still laughing!!! You liberals are such wimps…
  6. OlenkaOctober 12, 2010 at 9:43 am
Don’t flatter yourself Bill. Is that why you are such a curmudgeon? To “get under the skin” of liberals? Since liberals are “such wimps,” you really haven’t accomplished much, now have you?
  7. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 10:35 am
Regarding your last sentence, you make a valid point, Ole.
  8. DamageincOctober 12, 2010 at 9:59 am
Well then Jeff must have a high density condo under Bill’s skin because Jeff & ND have frequented his little videos. Without Jeff no would even see his pathetic videos, Billy is such a Diva.
  9. Daddy Joe GOctober 12, 2010 at 10:09 am
Bill’s videos are the only reason I look forward to keystone council meetings.
  10. DamageincOctober 12, 2010 at 10:15 am
He just hasn’t been putting out any videos worth watching in a long time. He keeps making the same tired video with the same news footage and pictures from 2006. Weak! Master Blogger OWNS Little Billy
  11. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 10:41 am
    And Billy owns DamaNatie.
  12. OlenkaOctober 12, 2010 at 10:44 am
    What does DamaNatie mean?
  13. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 10:44 am
Well, Master Blogger is pretty good at making s_ _ t up, I give him that; likewise to you DamaNate.
  14. DamageincOctober 12, 2010 at 11:15 am
You have every opportunity to prove anything wrong… and have failed to do so. Why is that? It should be easy right with all these dumb liberals.
  15. cashOctober 12, 2010 at 10:22 am
Hey Bill, I think what we have here is a group of individuals that have very little, with little hope for much of a future, unless guys like you help pay for it. They push for every freebie than can get out of Obama and his gang of crooks. Bill drop the OMG, it’s so . . .
  16. OlenkaOctober 12, 2010 at 10:30 am
Ah yes. Cash and his all-mighty assumptions about everyone that isn’t a conservative. All of which I might point out are wrong. It would probably crush you to find out that “this group of individuals” is working its butt off to have a very bright future… Just because the world doesn’t work the way you want it to, doesn’t mean it’ll fail. It doesn’t matter though; your closed-mindedness wouldn’t allow such a thought to penetrate that pessimistic and self-righteous mind of yours.
  17. cashOctober 12, 2010 at 10:53 am
OMG!!!! What you are doing is working toward total dependence on the government. I only wish your future was going to be brighter. You will need to find your wisdom someplace other than this blog. Good luck.
  18. OlenkaOctober 12, 2010 at 10:54 am
    HAHA. You’re cute.
  19. cashOctober 12, 2010 at 11:00 am
Actually I am. Tall dark and handsome is more accurate. A little overweight applies to descriptions.
  20. OlenkaOctober 12, 2010 at 11:01 am
    You single?
  21. cashOctober 12, 2010 at 11:03 am
Sure, no one will have a grumpy person like me.
  22. townbeetOctober 12, 2010 at 12:36 pm
OMG cash, you should totally go for it. Dinner and movie; I have movie for you “A Fridge too Far”
  23. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 10:40 am
Actually that omg was tongue in cheek, Cash… but you are correct; these circle jerk liberal scvblogger are relying on Obama’s stash. Speaking of excellent videos, check this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P36x8rTb3jI&feature=related
  24. OlenkaOctober 12, 2010 at 10:43 am
Circle jerk liberal scvblogger? Wow. How can anyone take someone so grotesque and childish seriously? The only stash liberals rely on is that from Cheech and Chong!
  25. cashOctober 12, 2010 at 10:55 am
OMG Bill! He even fooled me. You know I voted for the guy and the you lost our bet. I really messed up. Send the $20.00 to Jeff.
  26. DamageincOctober 12, 2010 at 11:11 am
We all aren’t as savvy as Billy to shake down our government contracted employers to buy houses we couldn’t afford. or be like Teaparty queen Michele Bachman and take over $250,000 in farm subsidies for land that doesn’t produce anything. Or be like John McCain and marry into money that gives you an income of over 6 million a year and still cash the evil SOCIALISTIC SECURITY Checks. Soon as I see the Teaparty people rallying against all GOVERNMENT hand outs even the ones many of them receive I could support or at very least respect them. But when I see these insane “Obama is Hitler” sign holding Socialists, living off Socialistic Security, riding around in government purchased wheel chairs, expecting me to believe they are a bipartisan group that just so happen to only support the political party that took MILLIONs in the 1990′s from the Financial industry to repeal Glass–Steagall Act which setup this financial collapse. I laugh at them and pray that the rest of America is smart enough to see this movement for what it is. A Political GIMMICK. Socialism is something Americans aspire too…
  27. cashOctober 12, 2010 at 11:21 am
Hey, Obama is the biggest crook in Washington, why are you pinching pennies?
  28. DamageincOctober 12, 2010 at 11:26 am
You are watching to much TV of the Fox variety. All politician except (Frank Ferry & Ron Paul) are crooks and Obama is no exception
  29. cashOctober 12, 2010 at 12:14 pm
    Not really, I watch Wolf!
  30. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 9:27 pm
Actually, socialism is something non achievers aspire to, Blazing Natie.
  31. DamageincOctober 13, 2010 at 6:36 am
I would agree wonder what is wrong with America will you be declining you socialistic security? Stand on your own two feet with no help from Uncle Sam?
  32. NickelDimeOctober 12, 2010 at 10:35 am
Bill isn’t happy unless he is belittling others. Hey Bill, this is required reading for kids to prevent them from having your affliction. Too bad they weren’t reading it back in the post-war era. We’d have fewer traumatized swimmers.
  33. cashOctober 12, 2010 at 10:57 am
That’s it, attack the messenger, ignore the message.
  34. DamageincOctober 12, 2010 at 11:18 am
isn’t that what billy does with everyone MORON HA! IDIOT HA! No intelligence or IQ can be found in anything he puts out.
  35. Daddy Joe GOctober 12, 2010 at 11:42 am
When the city takes over the libraries, they won’t be able to read anything writen after 2007, so we have that to look forward to.
  36. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 9:28 pm
And what are you doing, 5 pennies (1st sentence)?
  37. NickelDimeOctober 12, 2010 at 9:33 pm
I’m calling you out for the bully that you are. If it takes satire to get through, so be it. It’s on your level, dig? And I was serious about you reading that book.
  38. DamageincOctober 13, 2010 at 6:37 am
    Billy owned again.
  39. ScottEOctober 12, 2010 at 10:43 am
    What? No flag-burning brown people?
  40. Fred ButlerOctober 12, 2010 at 10:48 am
I don’t want to live in a high density hellscape. The wailing and gnashing of teeth is unnerving at night. Plus. It reminds me of those bleak, post apocalyptic like neighborhoods you see in those former Soviet Block, Scandinavian countries. But at least everyone will have the equal amount of solar panels to run our electricity for the allotted 4 hours a day.
  41. tiredOctober 13, 2010 at 2:26 pm
Scandinavian countries are mostly pretty happy, first-world, wealthy (and socialist) places in northern Europe, pretty far from the Soviet Bloc. I think you meant to say “Slavic” countries.
  42. Daddy Joe GOctober 12, 2010 at 12:23 pm
I am not one of the “brown people”, but I do most of my produce shopping at Vallarta. But then “I’m not a bigot, so I have only quality to guild me.
  43. CCOctober 12, 2010 at 12:36 pm
Funniest response here today goes to Nickledime, who responds with “Bill isn’t happy unless he is belittling others” on a blog entry devoted to doing that very thing to Bill. Ironic? You’re better than this Jeff.
  44. NickelDimeOctober 12, 2010 at 12:47 pm
Methinks you don’t know the difference between belittle and satire. Courtesy HarperCollins: belittle [bɪˈlɪtəl] verb 1. to consider or speak of (something) as less valuable or important than it really is satire [ˈsætaɪə] noun 1. a novel, play, entertainment, etc., in which topical issues, folly, or evil are held up to scorn by means of ridicule and irony
  45. Daddy Joe GOctober 12, 2010 at 2:55 pm
Thanks for clearing up the difference between “belittle” and “satire”. But what I’m really having trouble with is the difference between “belittle” and “ridicule”. Can you help with that?
  46. drive66October 12, 2010 at 5:33 pm
If you have to explain it, it ain’t funny.
  47. NickelDimeOctober 12, 2010 at 6:23 pm
    It wasn’t a joke.
  48. Daddy Joe GOctober 12, 2010 at 7:53 pm
    See, drive66 was right.
  49. NickelDimeOctober 12, 2010 at 8:21 pm
Yes, every single time. He’s really something. We share something special.
  50. drive66October 13, 2010 at 9:58 am
Not that I’m siding with Bill because I’m not.
  51. drive66October 13, 2010 at 9:53 am
Satire is supposed to be funny, right? And I’m not always right and when I’m not… I admit it.
  52. mikeOctober 13, 2010 at 1:04 pm
    huh?
  53. DamageincOctober 12, 2010 at 2:08 pm
Yes Jeff you are better then this… where was the Roger Gitlin jab? tsk tsk
  54. Daddy Joe GOctober 12, 2010 at 12:46 pm
How about this. Release Newhall from the clutches of the city. That way, you entitled folk don’t have to worry about us po’ people, and we get to keep our county library. Every body wins.
  55. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Master Blogger Jeffrey, please commend your wife on her excellent “renderig” (whatever that means). Oh, and glad to hear that you are married; are there any little Master Bloggers in your future?
  56. NickelDimeOctober 13, 2010 at 10:28 am
That’s his own business. For the record, George Washington was childless. Hopefully folks in the 18th century had the good sense not to ask him if there were any little presidents in his future.
  57. Gang FangOctober 12, 2010 at 8:52 pm
This post is on Billy “Silver Happy Trail” Reynold’s mind 24 hours a day right now. That is reason enough to love it.
  58. Bill ReynoldsOctober 12, 2010 at 9:24 pm
Yep, I’m diggin’ it big time, Gung Fungus. Are you Master Blogger’s wife, or do you simply worship him?
  59. Gang FangOctober 12, 2010 at 9:53 pm
That’s it, Bill. Just keeping doing the uncomfortable strut…..
  60. DamageincOctober 13, 2010 at 6:40 am
He tries so hard doesn’t he…
  61. Bill ReynoldsOctober 13, 2010 at 5:25 pm
You dopes are the ones with your panties in a wad and hey, get a life and stop living vicariously through Master Blogger Jeffrey.
  62. DamageincOctober 13, 2010 at 5:40 pm
Congrats. vicariously is a kind of a big word.
  63. Bill ReynoldsOctober 17, 2010 at 3:21 pm
You had to look it up, huh. Ha!
  64. Long Time ResidentOctober 12, 2010 at 9:37 pm
This is sooo great. We have friends who live in the Summit. I can’t tell you the number of nights they’ve had us up laughing at Bill’s antics and the wacked out old coots in the Stratfords. Apparently the last HOA board president ran him around like a toy dog. I’ve told my wife many times that should I end up in my old age a reviled misanthrope like him to shoot me. Please.
  65. scvtruthsquadOctober 13, 2010 at 10:13 am
This was great Jeff…. actually Billy probably thinks anyone that does not own a home as large as his has to be communist and if they have kids that want to use the community pool must be socialists.
  66. Bill ReynoldsOctober 13, 2010 at 5:26 pm
Too bad that you are delusional… well, not really.
  67. Valencia VallartaOctober 13, 2010 at 9:45 pm
I want to know more about how Bill went from being a floor supervisor in a manufacturing company to owning a big home in the Summit? Is there a map for that?
  68. Bill ReynoldsOctober 15, 2010 at 7:25 am
Hey Val Val, the method is called capitalism.
  69. MikeOctober 15, 2010 at 8:12 am
Work for a nickel, sue for a dime?
  70. SFC PerezOctober 13, 2010 at 3:02 pm
OMG the illustrations had me laughing more than the previews for Jackass 3D!
  71. Sergeant First Class PerezOctober 13, 2010 at 9:47 pm
Oh wait, I live in Awesometown. NOT FUNNY!
  72. Lori RivasOctober 13, 2010 at 7:55 pm
These illustrations were soooo funny! I, too, live in the bowels of Newhall, but for a town with the moniker of “high density,” these old lots are bigger than those in the Old Orchard developments, or, really, any other developments I’ve seen in SCV. I think the illustrations would be even more accurate if Mexican faces were peeking out of those Awesometown homes…you know, like, maids and gardeners and pool cleaners. Nothing like a little hypocritical xenophobia to ramp up the reality factor in SCV.
  73. ToddOctober 13, 2010 at 9:00 pm
The best part about this post… was the Santa Clarita city staffers that emailed me about it. Nice job Jeff.
  74. Sergeant First Class PerezOctober 13, 2010 at 9:50 pm
I want to know what smart a$$ put a gate at the top of a path in the Summit Park and locked it! At least put some cool flashing signage that alerts me to this being a Members Only Path before I run up it.
  75. SCVFanOctober 15, 2010 at 1:54 pm
Jeff, I seriously cannot believe you didn’t have couches, beds, tvs and random junk on the sidewalks left by our illegal alien neighbors.
