  • The body of a black woman “burned beyond recognition” was found at the site of a small brush fire in Castaic early Monday morning according to the LASD. It’s the second charred body found in Castaic since May 2009. The woman’s body was discovered after firefighters put out the small blaze around 5:39 am. SIGNAL, AP, KHTS

  • Speaking of .edu funding, the Hart District is thinking of creating an education foundation to insulate student programs from further cuts SIGNAL
  • A diesel spill at a Castaic truck stop last week is worse than originally thought, with significant amounts of diesel fuel spilling into Castaic creek, said the Department of Fish & Game SIGNAL

  • Excellent Barstow Desert Dispatch article on what Buck McKeon will do if/when he becomes Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. For one, McKeon promises to bring more defense spending/pork to California’s 25th District. DISPATCH

  • More foodie praise for SCV? Last week we linked to a writer who had some nice praise for SCV dining options; this week KPCC interviewed the writer. They’ve got a full radio report here, praising Egg Plantation, Maru Sushi, our Cookbooks Plus store in Old Town Newhall and saying we’ve gone “mad for winebars”; that inspired LAist to try some scones at the Newhall Coffeehouse.
  • Speaking of food, Awesometown blog has one last post profiling the food trucks that will be at Bridgeport on Saturday, October 16 for the OMG Awesometown Food Truck Festival Extreme Edition 1.0 AWESOMETOWN BLOG
  • Dissension in the SCV Tea Party Ranks: Last week Chris Lim, he of Tea Party Roundtable blog, announced that Meg Whitman didn’t rate high enough on his conservative purity-meter for him to vote for her. Well this week, the other Tea Party SCV blogger says he’ll vote for Meg Whitman, despite her flaws. The unity is most definitely not brewing. (ht: ND)

    Has anyone heard what the existing restaurants in Bridgeport Marketplace (CPK, Sabor, Kibuki, etc) think about the food truck festival descending upon their parking lot? Most weekends they do a pretty good business and the East end of the parking lot is pretty full. This event will have to negatively impact their business. (Or will there be enough people attracted that they will get an overflow and actually inrease their business?). I’m thinking an area away from existing restaurants would have been a better choice.

    Yet another dumb idea. The city is subsidizing brick and mortor business all over town so they can keep their doors open, and Awesometown promotes this meals on wheels. Fair is fair, let’s encourage all vendors to join in. I know you can buy fresh fruit ( I think) and tacos from other trucks in town.

    I’d just like to enjoy some delicious food in this valley for a change. Four of the five eateries in that center are crap and the other (Sabor) is seriously overpriced.

    I see, well I hope the truck thing works for you. Perhaps the eateries at that location will try harder. I have only eaten at two of the restaurants at Bridgeport, well that is, drank at one and ate at the other. Seems with all the resturants in the city you would be able to satisfy our palate. Try old town Newhall.

    There a few places I like, but I’ve grown tired of most of them. It will be exciting to have some variety, but I expect the crowds to be massive. Looking forward to Ludo Bites & Border Grill.

    Sometimes it appear too much was spent to create atmosphere leaving little to assure the food quality. I am told the restaurant business is difficult. I have found the food and atmosphere to be reasonably well balanced (perhaps a liitle overpriced) at The Oaks Grille.

    I would never defend most of the Bridgeport Marketplace restaurants as high end cuisine. Having become a decent cook on my own I rarely go out to eat. That being said they have a right to a fair market. Saturday evening has to be a big one when it comes to a restaurants thin margin of profitability on a monthly basis. Is this event in this location really the right thing to do???

    At the very least, this event will draw a a lot of people to the marketplace, some of which may have never been to the marketplace anyways. This could potentially bring some new business to the restaurants in the future. If I ran one of the restaurants, I would pass out flyers/coupons, even offer drink specials during the event.

    I’m not really understanding the concern people have. The owners/management of the shopping center would have contacted the businesses to make sure they were onboard. Newhall Land does not own this shopping center so its not like they just decided to hold it there and not notify the businesses. The owners teamed up with Newhall Land to do the food truck festival.

    Where are people going to get that high margin alcohol that all these businesses would rather be sell anyway? This event will be good for everyone.

    The news south of here is that these trucks have become a major problem, so why not introduce the problem to Assumetown! For the following reason turnout will be hampered. Saturday, October 16th 2010 5pm — 9pm Bridgeport Marketplace 23975 Newhall Ranch Road Valencia, CA 91354 Please Note – Cash-only event. No dogs and/or pets will be allowed to enter the event area (due to Health Department Regulations).

Either way this entitlement mentality that businesses in Santa Clarita never need to have competition is bogus and very un-free market. None of you that are anti-food truck have any hard evidence of any of your claims. I will be going and probably getting drinks afterwards either in bridgeport or towncenter depending on how crowded the places are in Bridgeport and it will be crowded…

    I heard from the owners of one of the businesses there (talked to him at the Taste of Expo on Friday night) they are involved, so its not some plot to destroy brick and mortar restaurants. [must there always be a plot to destroy people?] I have read a lot of opinions on this food truck matter on scvtalk, and some of you are so negative – how about be a little more open minded, try it out and then decide if you like it or not. Then share with everyone. I have an event already that evening so I am sad to miss it, but if it was anything like the trucks at the Tributefest in May its going to be a tasty night!

    You talk to the gal at the dress shop? Not every business at this location is a restaurant. So when you say involved, what doe this mean. Not to worry, the city will stop this before it get to out of hand. If the truck does not have an “A” showing, I’ll pass.

    Just surprised at Jeff’s word selection and editorial purview. You know I have no emotion. Evidently, you do. The actual wording from the article. “Los Angeles County coroner’s Lt. Fred Corral says the body is that of a black woman, but no identification has yet been made”.

    The ability to determine one’s race is suddenly the criteria for “recognition?” Hate to tell you, but the body could be unrecognizable, yet with minor forensic analysis, race can be determined. Thats why they have forensics…. or is that the “new fangled science” that Cash et al don’t believe in….

    The VC Star story is inaccurate. I looked up the vote online and in fact, Smyth voted against the budget. It is SB 870 for anyone who wishes to take a look.

    Looking at the Crime Reports website, they are showing a homicide on 10/6/10 on the 24800 block of Newhall Avenue in Jeff’s backyard. Anyone know of any details? No mention of it in the local press….

    Well, since LASD didn’t write up a story (oops – press release)for the local media, I’m not surprised. But you’d think people would be more interested in knowing that a murder occurred in the area than “Teens Getting a Taste of the Business World”…

    When there is an attempted murder, the only thing CrimeReports lists is the “murder” part. The incident referred to is the stabbing at Hart High School, an attempted murder which was extensively reported by all local media. CrimeReports is responsible for this inaccuracy, not the local media.
