SCV Full of Internet Tough Guys

Some of you may be wondering why I turned comment moderation back on. I did so because SCVTalk’s comments were getting a little out of hand, a little too personal and mean. By moderating comments, discussion is slowed down and bad comments never see the light of day. I hope to turn it back off soon once things settle down.

Maybe The Signal should think about doing the same thing. The SCV is full of a-hole internet tough guys, and whenever a story involves a Latino in Newhall or Canyon Country or some other part of town, they come out of the woodwork to spread their racist filth. This comment is case in point (posted yesterday in response to the story about the hit and run victim in Newhall):

Call it censorship, but I will not allow these kinds of comments to posted on SCVTalk. I hesitate to post even this since it points a spotlight on bad behavior but enough is enough. If anyone thinks they can post racist trash like the Signal commenter above on my site, they ought to think again. Or leave the site. Or move to the Antelope Valley. I don’t care.

    You are right Jeff. This type of thing should never be tolerated. And this is where the anonymity of the internet creates issues. The Signal needs to monitor comments more closely.

    Good for you, Jeff. I look forward to reading the thoughtful and reasonably civil back and forth. Lately it has become too ugly among some.

    It’s not just The Signal… AZCentral.com and USAToday.com have particularly nasty commenters running amok. The pure hate that some people spew frightens me.

    Jeff, can we have your censorship guidelines? Some should be obvious, but just to be sure….. I’m guessing leaning too far to the right and not far enough to the left would be reason for you to censor. (<:) The Signal post was shameful and way out of line.

    Cash, you are correct. Master Blogger Jeffrey has recently blocked several of my conservative comments & I wouldn’t be surprised if this one will be blocked.

    I think he dumped one of my posts; it was a joke about conservatives and liberals. I think the joke may have favored the conservative view a little too much for Jeff. The joke was not mean spirited.

    It’s not just The Signal which puts up racist comments. You would have been amazed at the incredibly racist (though perhaps factual) comments which were posted on the San Francisco Chronicle while there was a mini-riot in Oakland after a judge sentenced a transit policeman to only two years in jail for shooting a passenger in the head and killing him while the passenger was hand cuffed and laying on the sidewalk. In reality, this recession and the failure of California’s educational systems in urban areas is causing Whites, Blacks, Latinos and Asians to blame each other for all sorts of things. For those old enough to have lived through and listened to the violent anti-Catholic rhetoric during the Kennedy-Nixon campaign and during Kennedy’s presidency, it makes me think no progress has been made, at all, in each of us judging others as individuals.

    That post could have been written by anyone including the growing number of people who crash Tea Party Rallies and show up with racist messages on signs in order to sell the lie that Tea Party people are nothing but racists. I think it is important to point out that no comment moderation system can deduce the true intent of the poster and to say that a racist comment belongs to a particular group is slanderous at best.

    While this comment was deplorable, to say the least, anyone reading it is capable of coming to that conclusion. Freedom of speech is not just for those we agree with. Such ignorance need be ignored, not censored.

    Mr.Bill Reynolds is keeping a tally on his blocked comments and it begs the question- Why don’t you have your own blog? That would eliminate any censorship issues. I consider negative, personal attacks a form of spam, not meaningful discourse from those with differing opinions. I am disheartened by those who are emboldened by the semi-anonymity of the internet to make rude comments that they wouldn’t have the chutzpah to say to someone personally. I appreciate all your hard work and talent, Jeff, and that of your contributors. My attitude is, your blog, your rules. Thank you.

    Yeah Bill, Jeff is good about giving Diva Wing Nuts attention from time to time. Look what he does for Fred Butler, Chris Lims and David Bossert. So you will be guaranteed a few hits from time to time. You could even do a “David Bossert” and moderate all comments till you have a response or just not let ones you can’t answer through like he does all the time! Or more advanaced wing nuts like Robert Gardner have entire conversations with themselves on their blogs. I am quite confident in your ability to out do all of these guys!

    Kelly, I am not keeping a tally… it’s just noticeable when Master Blogger Jeffrey blocks some comments & the reasoning behind this behavior is a mystery other than it’s related to his left wing attitude. I already have a Web Site related to Veterans and other Veteran related work that takes much of my time. Oh, and stay tuned for one of my Signal LTE’s in the coming days.
