  • Two people who allegedly enticed buyers on Craigslist to meet them in the SCV, only to rob them, have been arrested. The SCV Sheriff’s Department says the pair, one male and one female, “blocked in their vehicle and proceeded to take all [the buyers'] personal belongings, including the cash they had brought to purchase the camera and their cell phones.” Bonus find: one of the suspect’s house contained 90 marijuana plants WRB
  • Metaphor fail: City planner uses sports car  metaphor to tout the caliber of a contractor it will hire to help the City become compliant with AB 32, the state’s global warming law. Environ International may get $160k to create a “climate action plan” for the City SIGNAL
  • Princess Cruises collects hundreds of Christmas presents for needy families and distributes them with the help of a local non-profit SIGNAL
  • Bruce McFarland reflects on what it’s like to be friends with Republicans in the SCV SIGNAL
  • Food blogger Lady Ducayne checked out the new Five Guys Burger joint at Town Center and left pretty disappointed. Her burger fell apart and the fries were soggy. I’ll probably try Five Guys sometime this week LADY DUCAYNE

    The other day, one of the readers questioned what bike lane segments would be eliminated in order to accommodate increased traffic flow under OVOV. They are as follows: 1. Bouquet between Plum Canyon and Seco 2. Soledad between River Circle and SR-14 3. Stevenson Ranch Parkway between the Old Road and Pico 4. Wiley between Railroad and Lyons How’s that for promoting alternative forms of transportation! Axing these segments will really hammer connectivity.

    I have been eating at 5 guys for over a year. First off you dont order the regular burger you order the “Little Burger” (It is large!) One order of fries feeds 2 people. And you can add all the different toppings for your burger for FREE! (I get mushrooms- jalapenos on a jr bacon cheeseburger and a Cajun Fries.. YUM!) There is no better fast food burger and fries. No the cheapest, but it is the best.

    I’ve been twice since they opened, and yes, the small burger will do and the smallest fries easily serves two. First time I went, the fries were very sad. The second time I went they were in the top 5 I’ve ever had. Thus far, most people at the Valencia location had the sadness fries I had on day one. I hope they get it together.

    Alot of words describe 5 guys but “best” is not one of them. Just the fact they cook them well done is a automatic fail.

    According to all of their self proclaimed “best of” signs on the walls, you’d think they would be, at least, decent. Sadly, they aren’t. I had the worst cold, soggy fries ever! The burger was ok but, for my money (5 guys is pricey) I’d rather go to In-N-Out or The Habit.

    I work with a food inspector who tells me ground beef is the most dangerous meat item out there in regards to food poisoning. Ordering anything less than medium-well to well is playing Russian Roulette with your bowels.

    Negative, Pork worse and give me that revolver full of taste opposed to that piece of “safe” tasteless bark they served me this week.

    Sorry Nate. Commercially ground beef is the most dangerous, by far. Death by pork is nearly non-existent these days.

    Pork is nasty and while it is one meat I would never touch unless I had nothing to eat, including cardboard and small lawn gnomes. And on a constant basis you hear of ground beef recalls, minus the handler error of introducing contaminants.

    ANY ground meat is more dangerous than the unground (is that the right word?) version. Why? Because the danger in beef and fish when it comes to food-born illness is on the surface, not underneath. Ever had carpaccio or tartare? Both delicious, both raw, both perfectly safe. Ground beef is so dangerous because when you grind meat, you exponentially increase the surface area, and thus, increase the amount of space that microbes, paramecium, viruses, etc. can attach themselves to.

    Well it’s quite easy to grind a piece of meat that wasn’t exposed to the surface at all. The real danger is in factory-ground meat where the pathogens of hundreds of cows are shared. Grind at home, and you’re OK.

    Nationally, Five Guys food is akin to In-N-Out burger or a Fat Burger. Their menu of garnishes is broader, distinguishing Five Guys’. It’s not a high end steak-burger. It’s a reasonable quality hand made hamburger. The fact that the company mandates that the thick burgers be cooked “well done” is definitely a turn off, if you don’t like your burgers cooked that way. Their french fries are “fresh cut” from potatoes out of the growers’ bags. That may mean that they are not as dried out as they should be in order to make the perfect, non-soggy fries. At some locations, like the problems on the first day in Santa Clarita, the grease may not have been hot enough to cook the fries. Alternatively they may not have been cooked long enough. Generally, I don’t like Five Guys french fries, and can’t be bothered with them. All in all, the Five Guys burgers should be better than large chains’ high end hamburgers, but no one should expect fancy restaurant gourmet quality steak burgers.

    I had the small burger and it fell apart. I don’t like messy burgers. It tasted fine. I’d rather have In-n-Out.

    “(We would be) getting the Ferrari of the (climate action plan) world,” assistant city planner Dave Peterson said. “And, since we chose an affordable firm, that would mean we’re getting the Ford Mustang of the (climate action plan) world.” I still don’t get it. Are we getting a Ferrari or a Mustang? Maybe he means we’re paying for a Ferrari but it will be reduced to a Mustang once the city gets the opinion it’s paying for. The Ferrari metaphor here is a weak attempt to feign interest in doing OVOV well, much like saying the new city library tax will be a “tax credit” with more service. “Sure you can simultaneously double the population and improve our air. It just takes a Ferrari of a study.” Right.

    As I’ve pointed out on several occasions, KHTS is guilty of the same crime…. plagiarizing word-for-word (but rearranging ever so craftily) a press release by Sgt. Harris. and attaching one of their own names to it. Shame.

    Re: tonight’s City Council meeting: McLean advocates for a more business friendly environment, so that CA businesses don’t leave for….Maryland. Was it just me, or was there an awkward silence after she said that? Because we Claritans don’t want our local tax dollars enriching some private company in Maryland. Oh. Wait…
