  • Melissa Brown pleads not guilty on charges of vehicular manslaughter. And her lawyer, David Kestenbaum (must resist NPR tie-in) says the real driver at fault on July 4 was the SUV Brown collided with before her car spun into Matilda Garnica, killing the 43 year old mother of three instantly SIGNAL
  • Rain Deluge 2011 has claimed its first victim: the SCV Food Truck Festival has been postponed to Saturday February 26. Tell all your friends lest they go to Central Park on Saturday in the rain and have nothing to eat KHTS
  • Also, SCVers apparently forgot how to drive in the rain yesterday as the Signal reports that there were 12 vehicle collisions by 10am SIGNAL
  • Great story in the Signal today on Pvt. Michael Landis, a Saugusian in the 101st Airborne Ranger division serving in Afghanistan. Landis and his team were involved in a crazy firefight with Taliban forces in October in which they engaged 120 fighters and slayed 92 of them. The Signal interviewed his parents who couldn’t be prouder (or more worried) and I dug up the CNN transcript of Landis’ interview after the firefight SIGNAL, CNN
  • Local Armenian man and former owner of a fast food restaurant in Canyon Country is arrested in an FBI sweep of the so-called Armenian Power organized crime syndicate. The unnamed man is charged with identity theft and two counts of “access to vice fraud.”  SIGNAL
  • Annexation of the new Vista Canyon project along with Jake’s Way would constitute the largest annexation in City history if the Council goes along with it. The Planning Commission recommended the move this week SIGNAL
  • Castaic High School as close as its ever been to being built say Hart District officials. SIGNAL
  • Junior Republican congressman out-maneuvers Speaker Boehner and Buck McKeon, successfully convinces Tea Party-backed Congressmen to kill duplicate F-35 engine, saving taxpayers $450 million POLITICO
  • Assemblyman Cam Smyth blogs at FlashReport.org, a conservative California blog on why the Governor should embrace rather than eliminate Enterprise Zones. But he doesn’t say how many jobs have been created by the program that shovels $1 billion in tax credits to businesses. He says the elimination of the EZ program may actually be illegal FLASH REPORT
  • Cam Noltemeyer says the City isn’t being forthcoming enough on Whittaker Bermite costs SIGNAL
  • CLWA chief Dan Masnada accuses Lynne Plambeck of misrepresenting a whole range of water issues and says she refuses to attend water workshops that might answer her questions SIGNAL
  • Great Time Ranger column this week. To add more fodder to Mike’s “Where in the SCV?”series, John Boston tells us how, on February 15, 1871, the entire town of Newhall moved from Bouquet Junction to its present location. So uhhh yeah, maybe the Saugus Cafe is in Newhall after all? TIME RANGER

    If you believe we have no water problem one may be mistaking. To suggest there may be a water problem would not be good for business.

    Cam Smyth is the local business community _ _ _ _ _! Enterprise Zones are nothing more than a corporate give-a-way! Remember the first fat cat in our area to step up and take advantage of the freebie was the Acura King. Those that live in a gated community of million dollar homes, and are charter members of the local country club, hardly need the support of the taxpayers to manage their business. Mr. Smyth is wrong. With this fact in mind, the SCV is the last place I would buy a car.

    Dear Mr. Smyth- Perhaps eliminating Enterprise Zones is illegal. But cutting $750 million from the Department of Developmental Services is immoral. And probably illegal as well. How will the Lanterman Act (guaranteeing developmentally disabled Californians access to services and support that make it possible to live and function within society like non-affected residents) be upheld if programs must close for lack of funds? What was that? no new taxes? create jobs? blahblahblah- the people you should be protecting are being robbed.

    Smyth is out of touch with reality. He has been wined and dined by the local, so called movers and shakers, to the point his judgement is clouded.

    The Saugus Cafe hasn’t been in Newhall since Newhall moved! Newhall moved out and forgot to tell the Saugus Cafe where it was going. Kind of like parents moving while the kid is in school and leaving no forwarding address…

    How sad that CLWA has chosen to attack Lynne personally rather than address the real issues which are resulting in water rate increases and future rationing. He intimates that if only this one person were to go to a workshop then all would be well. There are many people and groups who see the naked emperor in the water projections from CLWA, which for years has grossly overstated water quantity and quality. We now face costs in the hundreds of millions of dollars to build facilities to meet standards… and CLWA has done nothing to address this, either pro-actively, or even re-actively, other than to shrug and say “pay up” to the ratepayers. CLWA… late on perchlorate, late on chloride, but never late to see their developer cronies when they call for more subsidies for their new developments, at current ratepayer expense. To paraphrase Cheech and Chong, when it comes to honest discloure, “Dave’s not home.”

    Unfortunately, people only notice impacts after they’ve been bit in the but. I had a friend recently complaining about the water bill. I asked him if he sent in his letter opposing the rate increase and he said no. And I asked him what did he expect! Similarly, my wife and I were talking about OVOV. She said why care about it – it will only affect the people living here 10-30 years from now. I told her if you don’t speak out against OVOV now, that everything will be built, traffic will be a mess, we’ll be stuck with water rationing and that nothing can be done about it because it is too late. I just wish folks would look past the drivel in the Signal and wake up!

    At the last council meeting the mayor told us we could avoid mineral deposits on our dishes by putting vinegar in the dishwasher. No suggestion as to how to avoid mineral deposits in our kidneys and livers. The lawyers and accountants can talk all they want, I ain’t drinking the stuff.

    Times must be tough on auto row! Valencia Mercedes Benz has stooped to a new low, new for even a car peddler. VMB door hanger ads are being hung by the regulars we see walking about the neighborhood. I am not saying they are illegal……

    Almost every news outlet I watched yesterday got the story wrong about Melissa Brown. They kept saying she faced up to 6 years in prison. Impossible, due to the section she is being charged with. Obviously all the stations and newspapers listen to each other and report the same wrong story.

    Anyone who wants to know the type of fighting Landis was involved in will enjoy the documentary film Restrepo – it is nominated for Best Documentary Academy Award and can be streamed from Netflix. Informative and powerful. Awesometown Steve gives it four stars.

    I’m just disappointed that no one commented, until you Petz, on Private Landis. I guess the focus on libraries, street names, and calcium in water is so much more important….SMH.

    Petz knows several soldiers in Afghanistan and monitors Michael Yon reports. Restrepo is a very hard movie to watch when you know folks involved in battle. The mainstream media is missing in action during the war because they don’t want Obama to take heat for being an ineffective war president. Thankful that this movie gives us a way to see what the soldiers are up against and the incredible strain they experience. Produced by National Geographic.

    The mainstream media has been missing in action from the beginning long before Obama was a senator. Try to be honest Petz. Bush admin didn’t want another veitnam where the American people had to see what was happening. Instead much like being a pound of hamburger from the grocery store wrapped in a nice plastic package we are never reminded of the realities of where it came from.

    I think this conflict has had the most media coverage out of any. Some of it good, some of it bad. The issue I see is in either the Left or Right side having their skewed views and opinions which don’t match up with reality, and then try to force them on each other.

    Petz is madder than hell at the Hart School Board this morning. Late start Wednesday’s-No School Friday or Monday. While Governor Walker is addressing problems in WI our school board is reviewing plans for a new high school in Castaic we cannot afford to operate and putting solar panels up to feel good about themselves. Maybe they can use the solar panels to charge up the electric buses to take our children on extracurricular trips. It is not about education it is about maintaining the status quo ante. The whole damn thing is a bad joke….and my hopes for change are dashed and destroyed. Tea Partiers must unite and take control.

    Castaic HS will get built or there will be an angry mob taking over the baord meetings. Two bond measures sold on a promise, and now the should even THINK of breaking it? NEVER! They will be held to their word!

    Thanks for the heads-up on the Wildwood Canyon purchase, Jeff! (although many properties in the canyon aren’t quite as “tony” as you indicate) This is a great acquisition that I hope leads to more publicly-accessible space in the Newhall Triangle. It preserves some lovely oak woodland and chaparral habitat. But what I really want to know about is a property label on the map attached to the agenda report: “Gateway Ranch,” aka “Las Lomas.” What gives here?

    Yes, the first Newhall Depot moved to present day Newhall, but the old town of Surrey was there when the next depot was built on the site. It was later renamed Saugus by HMN.
