  • A former Santa Clarita building inspector is being investigated by authorities for bribery, according to the Signal. The inspector, Craig Ingraham, worked for the City from September 2004 to February 2011. The City had no comment on the matter and he hasn’t been arrested or charged at the moment. SIGNAL
  • 34 year old man arrested for urinating at Central Park after a mother spotted him and called the cops. The man turned away from the mom mid-stream but he still got arrested and put in the klink on $35,000 bail. SIGNAL
  • Five students fought each other on campus at Saugus High on Tuesday. An on-school Deputy broke up the fight quickly, but the students could face some “consequences” according to the principal. SIGNAL Meanwhile three West Ranch students were busted for smoking pot after one was spotted “prowling.” The three students were chased by neighbors until Deputies took custody of them. KHTS
  • It’s incredible to me that the SCV alternative schooling community -charter, private and home schoolers- continue to build out their own education infrastructure. Today the Signal reports on the “Huckleberry Center for Creative Learning,” a 240 student “hands-on”  learning center built for home schooled students at a Newhall church SIGNAL
  • Assemblyman Cameron Smyth explains to KHTS why he voted against a bill that would have given state Insurance Commissioners the power to limit the obscene rate hikes private health insurance companies levy on their customers. Last year Blue Cross tried to raise rates 39% on its policy holders. KHTS
  • Meanwhile Franchise Tax Board member George Runner is up to something: he’d like to reorganize the way the state collects taxes. SIGNAL
  • And finally, Congressman McKeon thinks it’s “probably not” a good idea to release corpse photos of Osama Bin Laden, who was dispatched with great haste by Navy Seals on Sunday in Abbottabad Pakistan. He told the WaPo that OBL’s head shot might be seen as gruesome by some, like what we all see on NCIS but real. “I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard that it –- you know, when you take a couple of shots in the face….I don’t know.” WAPO

    I found it funny that the news about a deputy breaking up a brawl at Saugus high and 3 West Ridge students being busted for pot and prowling is followed by “It’s incredible to me that the SCV alternative schooling community -charter, private and home schoolers- continue to build out their own education infrastructure”

    I wasn’t trying to make that claim. The way the news lined up just made me laugh. Anytime you have one or more teenagers together you run the risk of sex/ drugs/ vandalism / violence. I’m sure safety is an issue for some that homeschool. But not high on the list for the homeschoolers that I know.

    It doesn’t add up how, exactly? Are you suggesting that the public schools in SCV have all the bases covered, and there is no need, or no room, for an alternative style of schooling? My kids do not, nor have they ever, taken classes at Huckleberry, but I have heard many great reports of the learning that occurs there. How do you learn things, ND? Do you attend prescribed classes for the acquisition of all knowledge? Or do you read independently, or discuss with others, or attend live performances, or try things out with your owns hands? Do you learn by listening, doing, reading or talking? Do you learn by following your interests, or by mandate from an outside source? What kinds of things inspire your learning? What time of day are you most alert? Do you learn with peers of the same exact age, and neighborhood? There are so very many ways to learn, all of which are valid. There is no way that any school system – public, private, other – can address all styles of learning and instruction. Having more options only benefits all learners.

    In Dec. of 2010 a plan to turn Point Dume Marine Science Academy into a charter school was rejected by the school board. Eagles Peak Charter School K-12 exists in Irvine, and Mount Diablo Flex Academy K- 12 just opened (Contra Costa County Board of Education). The fringe is everywhere.

    Just to clarify, Huckleberry is not a charter school. It receives no state money, and is more akin to picking classes out of the Seasons catalogue, except that Huckleberry has some sort of barter/points system for those who teach or work there. Second, one of the schooling options that draws folks to SCV are the large, varied and very active community homeschool groups. Yes, the fringe is also a schooling draw.

    Although I understand Buck McKeon’s position, I believe we should release the pictures of Bin Laden. It is time the United States end the” Political Correct” game of worrying that we might offend our advisories. Every time we take that position, we embolden our enemies and come across looking weak. We did it, were proud of it and Bin Laden was made to pay for his crime. America needs to send a clear message, if you attack the United States, you will pay for your actions. Maybe it is time for a policy of “Talk loudly and carry a big stick”.

    What’s the point in releasing the photos. If we didn’t get him and he’s alive they’d be risking humiliation among the world as he made an appearance to discredit us. He’s dead, we got him. We also really landed on the moon and Obama was born in the US. The Earth is also round not flat.

    I never suggested this event never happened. Release of the photo does much more than just dispel conspiracy theories. Your WebGuru is absolutely correct. We did send a clear message by killing him. Because of that fact, now is not the time to cower by withholding a picture or worry about saying the wrong thing, it is the time to show even greater unity and resolve. The message needs to be repeated often and loudly, if you attack the United States, you will pay for your actions.

    Al I agree with you. We need to illustrate in vivid color what actually happens to murderers who kill innocent Americans. As President Bush said, no matter how long it takes, we will hunt you down. The entire world, both friends and foes, needs to see that the American people mean what we say. We have a mighty military and we will not sit still for attacks upon our citizens. Reinforce the concept that you do not mess with us or you will pay the consequences!

    I don’t think a picture is gonna scare off someone nutty enough to attack another nation, no matter how graphic. Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the world at large is pretty desensitized to gore and such. Besides, most murderers who kill innocent Americans wind up in Texas.

    Berta is displaying a flaw that many Americans have that say we can blow up, shoot, and scare extremists into submission. It is a brutish simpleton approach. I know Obama hasn’t come up with any snappy catch phrases that get the Troglodytes to wet their undies in excitement, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t the right thing to do. The entire world knows the US has a massive military complex, which is the reason these extremist snipe us from the shadows. Their propaganda tells their members that they are a success if they die but kill multiple Americans and they will be rewarded in heaven. Releasing OBL videos or photos will only give the Taliban a propaganda tool to recruit, unite and embolden. We are here to win the whole war not celebrate one touchdown.

    I don’t think there is any evidence to support the contention that releasing the photos will discourage our enemies from attacking us. Did the videos of Americans being tortured and killed have that effect on us? No. If anything, it only strengthened our resolve to fight. Those who claim they seek proof of Bin Laden’s death (aka the “deathers”) will not be satisfied by the photographs (or any other sort of proof). Those who are morbidly curious do not need to have their curiosity satisfied. Killing Bin Laden was justified. He was a major threat and a criminal of the highest order, but displaying the photographs accomplishes nothing worthwhile. Obama is right — that is not who we are and it is not who we should be.

If it takes showing a bloody dead body to get the point across to the world that you do not send your terrorists to mess with my children, my grandchildren, neighbors, fellow Americans, and me I say show the damn photos of what happens when we catch up with you, you know consequences! Those jihadists who hate us will not change, but perhaps some of these folks will fear our retribution and think twice before attacking our interests throughout the world and that will save innocent lives including Muslims.

    Agree – I have heard many, many interviews with the families of 911 victims in NY, DC and Pa. None of them want the photos displayed. It will not take away their pain – it will not bring back their loved ones and above all – some said it just makes us look like them as they dance in the streets when Americans are killed. I, myself think that these familiy members are the only ones whose words have any validity in this discussion.

    Interesting WashPost article you linked to, about how Obama’s more sophisticating thinking doesn’t come off as well in a “sound bite” or “catch-phrase” so beloved by short attention span people like Bill. It seems to sail right overhead. They don’t “get it,” and so they arrogantly and ignorantly assume there is nothing to “get.” In a similar way, Carter’s rep is “weak on defense,” (especially after the failed Iran rescue) and yet it was under Carter that all those black SDI programs (“Star Wars”) were funded and developed, filling the toolbox that Reagan emptied in defeating (and taking credit for the defeat of) the Soviets. So who really understood what it required to be strong?

    As much as I’d love to believe that Carter had more to do with it, SDI actually was introduced as a proposal in 1983 by Reagan. I can’t find any credible evidence to the contrary.

    And without a proper security clearance, you never will. Reagan proposed it in the “white world” only because Carter had equipped him with projects taken through demonstration and validation in the “black world.” You think that technology just gets pulled out of an engineer’s a$$ ready to go? It takes years of development, from concept to validation to engineering development to implementation. Typical development cycles back then were on the order of 10 years. Please.

    I believe the point to be made is “Be Consistent” If you were all for the Abu Graib photos being released. Then would it not make sense that you are for the OBL photo release? Just watched Michele Malkin on TV and she was blasting the president for not releasing photos. WHAT? This is the same Malkin that was on TV blasting the release of the prison photos because the put our soldiers at risk. The same goes for Chrissy Matthews. He was all for the prison photos (Did not think it would cause any harm to soldiers) Now he believes the OBL photos should not be released because of the harm they would do. I believe the photos should not be released. It makes little or no difference. The dude is dead and that was the goal. I felt the exact same way about the Abu Graib photos. Sometimes we need to look beyond politics and do what is right for our soldiers. But before you make a position statement, think about your past positions. One last thing… Very seldom have I had the urge to compliment this president. But the other night the only thing that came to my mind was “Well done Mr. President SIR!!! We got the bastard”

    16-26-46hrs. The job got done. I am sure there was quite a bit more planning involved. Had to get stories straight.(did not do a great job there) Had to contact the paki’s so they could get their story straight. (deny knowledge) There is only one opinion a reasonable person can make. We killed the POS of shit and the President made the call to do it. The goal was accomplished and it is time to move on. This will not be the last time we talk about terrorists on this site. They will keep coming after us. But lets not base our opinions of the actions on the ideology of the President in charge.

    I’m of the opinion that we should have released the pictures, but it’s not an easy decision. If the analysts are to be believed, he’s still very important to the leadership of al-Q so his being dead means, well, he’s dead. I see the honor in withholding the photos, and I also recognize that it isn’t an irreversible decision, as their release would have been. Plenty of us are going to stake out positions that are favorable to our party’s actions or contrary to what the other party does. I like to think that for many, this episode has transcended this. We’ll see how that sticks.

    In comparing apples to oranges: The taking out of OBL was a top secret, well planned and executed mission carried out by highly skilled and trained military personnel. Abu Graib was the result of a bunch of bored GI f*ckups who were stupid enough to take their own pictures of their abhorrent behavior. To use one incident to compare it to the other doesn’t make any sense.
