New crime site shows when SCVers are most punchy & grabby

It seems like crime mapping sites are a dime a dozen these days but a new one caught my eye. Linked to by Bossert over at WRB, CrimeMapping.come lets you select & aggregate crime reports for a given time period all in a friendly Web 2.0 interface.

I filtered the above map by simply zooming out and taking a look at all reported crimes committed between April 1 and April 30, 2011. There are 349 crimes on the map.

The site even has an interesting (if primitive) “Trends” button which groups crimes by categories and shows when we SCVers are feeling violent or grabby. (Hint: it’s usually Friday and Saturday nights)

Of course if it was a true trending tool, it would not just tell me what crimes happened, but, Minority Report style, when and where they are going to happen in the future.

It also doesn’t group crimes by community, zip code, or neighborhood tract, which would be useful for all sorts of things like deciding where to buy your next home or using such data as ammunition in our on-going and neverending bashing of Stevenson Ranch and/or Canyon Country.

But anyway, go on over and check it out.

Jeff It is interesting you are bringing up the issue of Crime in Santa Clarita. At this Wednesday’s Canyon Country Advisory Committee meeting we will be hosting presentations on our Fire Fighter’s Search and Rescue efforts in Japan, Pardee’s project by Golden Valley Road and What’s happening at Henry Mayo. But next month, the Sherriff Department is scheduled to provide a presentation on Captain Becker’s 8 Zone Crime Prevention program. How about visiting the CCAC and hearing about it first hand?

Interesting how Valencia has a larger cluster of crimes that Saugus. I thought Valencia was a better place to live according to some on this site.

There’s just more stuff worth stealing in Valencia…..

The clusters in Valencia look to be at the shopping centers (esp Town Center). So I technically agree with Linda, more stuff to steal!

The unfortunate thing is that these broad categorization of crimes doesn’t really tell you the best story…. “assault” can mean anything from “mom he’s touching me!” to “please stop beating my head against a wall!!!!” A lot of theft/larceny thats reported is so very minor, its often things like parents reporting that their own kid stole $500 cash out of their purse (yes, that happens, and more often than you think) or “I think my car keys/watch/wallet were stolen… I’m sure I left them right here…” But, I’d say for a valley of 125K + (in the City, at least), we’re in good shape. Becker and his crew do a good job.

I agree – not all crimes can be lumped under one simple heading. How about the addition to a car that was stolen in Valencia last month. The owners left their car OPEN, teenagers got in it and stole the key in it to their other car – which was parked right next to it. Then they came back early one morning and took the other car to go for a joy ride. The teenagers were caught in it in Simi Valley smoking weed.
