Council to vote on own compensation, budget & library purchases

Next week’s City Council agenda has been released. The hottest item has to be #18, which  details on what the acquisition of the County’s library infrastructure & collections will cost: $8,081,596 to buy books, buildings, furniture, fixtures and equipment. It breaks down like this: $580,000 for the old library building in Newhall and $4.72 million for the Valencia library. The rest of the items and materials all add up to the $8 million figure.

Councilmembers will also tackle the 2011-2012 budget, which goes into effect on July 1. The budget for the next FY is $159m, with $160m in projected revenue. The staff report says sales tax continues to be the City’s biggest revenue generator with $26.5 million of general fund revenue (about 34% of the general fund) coming from sales tax.

Meanwhile the money the city gets from developer fees is expected to decrease nearly 6% next year.

But not everything is set to decrease. The City Council will also vote on their own compensation next week. Currently councilmembers receive $1,571/month for their service. State law allows them to increase that by up to 5%, but last time this issue came before the Council, they delayed voting on it.

Also on the agenda:

  • Spending $2.8 million to buy some open space land in Haskell Canyon
  • Solid waste stuff

Petz, can you still afford gas for your chain saw?
  2. PetzMay 20, 2011 at 1:45 pm
It is battery powered. AAs, but you can send me some. Petz opposes all this Open Space purchase. While time limits my ability to research the issues-the facts are opaque at best. Parcel 2812-007-002 is owned by an LLC shrouded in secrecy Santa Clarita Investors LLC II. Supposedly has a lien from First Bank of $5.9 million dollars. Petz says we need more information before buying vacant land-bailing out unknown investors financed by greedy banks. Furthermore, Petz is increasingly upset by the imports running around town with Obama 2012 bumper stickers. These people need to be confronted and forced to explain why they would repeat the same mistake.

I haven’t seen any stickers, but I’m buying a few mugs for some of my best friends on SCVtalk: https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/o2012-made-in-the-usa-mug

Let’s just put that birth certificate issue to rest. The 14th amendment of the Constitution (that quaint document you never fail to ignore) requires a citizen to be born in the United States AND “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” It was meant to assure citizenship to slaves after the civil war-not citizenship to the children of foreign diplomats and foreign exchange students who fathered children on US soil. So let’s apply the Constitution as written and not “spike the football” in the face of Constitutionalists.
  5. MikeMay 20, 2011 at 2:17 pm
That’s a novel argument, completely without merit. His mother was an American, end of story.
  6. JeffMay 20, 2011 at 2:19 pm
Aren’t you guys the ones who are trying to repeal the 14th Amendment because you don’t want Latino babies to be born in ‘Merica?

Correction: TERROR BABIES (DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNN!!!!)

So if the car is an “American” company but it is manufactured in Canada or Mexico is it any more an import than a Toyota that is made in Kentucky?
  9. PetzMay 20, 2011 at 2:26 pm
Because he was born to a citizen of Kenya-he is eligible for dual citizenship and cannot have undivided loyalty to the United States of America. Let me be clear…the Electoral College did not fulfill it’s responsibility to fully investigate and document the eligibility of BHO to become president…….once he was elected by the Electoral College he became “president”,, but the questions remain open for discussion and debate. So quit waving that birth certificate around as if it legitimates anything.

Do you want a Made In America Birth Certificate Coffee Cup? I’ll donate $15 to Obama in your name and give you the cup.
  11. PetzMay 20, 2011 at 2:30 pm
Would prefer the tee shirt with the birth certificate on the back.
  12. yourwebguruMay 20, 2011 at 3:03 pm
Obama was a dual citizen of Kenya (which is completely legal in the US, and the constitution does not state that one is ineligible because they WERE a dual citizen), however Kenya prohibits dual citizenship for adults, and Barack Obama officially lost his Kenyan citizenship status at the age of 23 (the officially recognized legal age of adults in Kenya). He is, in fact, a natural born citizen as his mother was American and he was born on American soil. So your statement is false, dear Petz. He in fact IS NOT eligible for dual citizenship. These were all facts readily available to the Electoral College with nothing more than the click of a mouse.
  13. PetzMay 20, 2011 at 3:16 pm
John Bingham stated in the House of Representatives in 1862: Who are natural-born citizens but those born in the Republic? […] [P]ersons born within the Republic, of parents owing allegiance to no other sovereignty, are natural born citizens. Gentleman can find no exception to this statement touching natural-born citizens except what is said in the Constitution relating to Indians.[9] He reiterated his statement in 1866: Every human being born within the jurisdiction of the United States of parents not owing allegiance to any foreign sovereignty is, in the language of your Constitution itself, a natural born citizen.[10] It is an open question of interpreation. Petz has acknowledged that the Electoral College elected Obama to hold the office of “president”. Than should finish it.
  14. PetzMay 20, 2011 at 3:17 pm
Suffice it to say Barack’s father did not owe his allegiance to the United States.
  15. yourwebguruMay 20, 2011 at 3:57 pm
All before the 14th amendment was enacted, not to mention more recent immigration laws dictating the definition of a natural born citizen. That’s the classic birther dodge to go back 150 years to make their case.

Highlights the difference between an Originalist who honors the words and intent of the Constitution-and a Statist who believes in a “living constitution”. That the liberal courts have not honored the original words and intent of the document as a matter of record . The unaccountable bureacracy has distorted and ignored the law is beyond question. The ignorance shown here is truly astounding. Get over it. A black man is your President. On the other hand, this kind of racist idiocy will serve to marginalize those of similar belief, who will never be a majority, and thus ensure Obama’s re-election. Maybe throw in a winking reference to his middle name while you are at it. Thank you, keep up the good work.
  18. Bill ReynoldsMay 22, 2011 at 11:30 am
Nothing to do with race but everything to do with his idiotic policies such as BHO’s recent Israel blunder. The guy is an embarrassment! Keep drinking your kool-aid, Spiney.

Anyone know why the supposedly anti-war President B. Hussein is in violation of the “War Powers Act” regarding Libya?
  23. spineflower2May 20, 2011 at 4:54 pm
Hey folks, I just read that Bill Reynold’s middle name is “Bin Laden.” It must be true, I read it on the internets. I bet he’s not even a citizen.
