Did Newhall just get put in a (draft) Democratic Congressional District?

There are a lot of maps (and confusion) floating around right now but the map below comes straight from the redistricting commission and it shows Newhall being carved out and put in a separate Congressional District from the rest of the SCV:

This is going to shake things up like never before. I mean talk about an exercise in mental geography. Not only does Lyons Separate the 91321 from the 91355, the Master Plan from the scrappy and unplanned, but now, quite possibly, it or another dividing line like it could separate the southern portion of the SCV into a Democratic or more liberal district from Buck’s district just north.

Ladies and gentlemen this is the political earthquake we knew might happen in this redistricting scheme.

If you’re a perpetually pessimistic SCV liberal, this could be the best news of the year. I’m not saying you should move to Newhall and buy a house, but…well, you should. Come join me in our new liberal, walkable, utopia! Let’s see how this shakes out in the coming weeks before jumping to conclusions and getting too excited

Todd, great find here. From the PDF, it seemed like it followed census tracts, but on the LA Times map it’s a little different. I’ll assume they used one of the GIS-friendly formats the CRC made available (I’ve been trying to convert .shp to .kml, but to no avail). So either they have better info and their maps are right, or their data required a little fine-tuning and they nudged the lines ever so slightly. I’m going to guess the former, but it does seem odd to follow census tracts but differ ever so slightly. Do they even have that much data?

This is very close to what was around last week with the following exceptions: The city of Lancaster is still divided between the 25th and 22nd Districts; and Newhall is carved off from the 25th district. Suffice it to say that the Castaic to the Sea State Senate seat is not one that Cameron Smyth can run in. Assembly seat belongs to a candidate from Santa Clarita.

I would disagree. Adding Simi changes things a lot. It changes the seat from a very safe McKeon seat to a very safe for any Republican seat. If you saw Wilk’s numbers this morning, that district was basically 50-50. Simi is as conservative as SCV in the 80s. (come to think about it, just about everything in Simi is like SCV in the 80s). Again, no immediate implications, but big post-Buck implications. Also, it makes it a little less likely that the next GOP candidate will be from the AV (still likely, but not quite as much). For example, a candidate with an established rep in SCV and Simi might be on equal footing against an AV’er (think Smyth, Strickland). The Assembly seat, while likely a Republican SCV seat, that’s no certainty. We’ll have to wait for the final numbers, but a Democrat could win and a strong Democrat would likely come from the SFV rather than the SCV. Also, if Greig Smith (outgoing GOP LA City Councilman) is interested in running, he could be formidable. Looking east, I think it’s curtains for Elton Gallegly and Tony Strickland.

Sorry but even Simi has changed since the 80′s. In 2008 (yes, a strong Democratic year) incumbent Assemblyman Cameron Smyth defeated Carole Lutness in Simi by just 4,464 votes. Simi is still on balance conservative/Republican, but like Santa Clarita the red and blue lines are on a trajectory of convergence. The place to watch over the next few election cycles is the Antelope Valley which has a growing black and hispanic populations and is becoming less and less Republican. Republican Steve Knight won the open assembly seat in 2008 narrowly and carried the AV by only 2,151 votes. These trends won’t endanger Buck in the short term, but will make the seat competitive when he retires.

Good points, but there’s still a notable spread between the ID numbers of SCV vs. Simi. SCV has actually nudged a little bit more Republican in the last year. The convergence had been fast, but it halted when the housing market crashed, mostly due to fewer Democrats moving to town. Even if this district were to turn nominally blue, I think it would be a while longer before we see a serious Democratic contender due to the lack of widely known Democratic candidates. Democrats will need to start winning big seats here or in the AV before a viable Congressional candidate could emerge. That or a celebrity.

I think Greig Smith is completely retired from politics. He could have run for a third term on the LA City Council (which pays $180k and doesn’t require travel to Suckramento), but chose instead to retire. But the SFV does make up a majority of the assembly district so if a well funded and well connected person from that area does run they could take the seat (like Dr. Keith Richman did).

Good point. Wouldn’t seem like a move he’d make, especially considering he announced retirement long before any seats were drawn. People have left the council for Sacramento before, like Alex Padilla, but Padilla has a long and bright future ahead of him.

The Ventura County Star seems to agree that the heart of Congressman Elton Gallegly’s district, Simi Valley, his home town, has been stolen away from him. http://www.vcstar.com/news/2011/jun/10/draft-new-political-maps-unveiled-elton-gallegly/ The average Simi Valley resident is going to be very irate about that line change, because over the last 25 years or so, Congressman Gallegly has been very attentive to constituent issues, particularly forcing Boeing to clean up the massive radioactive soil and groundwater contamination seeping down into Simi Valley from Rocketdyne aka Santa Susana Field Lab. Now, Simi Valley residents are going to have to “rely” on Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon to push Boeing around for them. Fat chance. He can’t even solve the problem of the Cemex Mine in his own district, and he’s had 8 years to get that done. I see the fine hand of Boeing in the Congressional District line drawing for Simi Valley. I also suspect that there will be a very aggressive challenge against Rep. McKeon, with movement of allegedly “safe” Republican votes in Simi Valley into the Democrat column in the voting booth in retribution for their Congressman being taken away from them.

Very very interesting to see what happened in the State Senate… Carving out the hills of Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana, etc…. I’m guessing its now very heavily tilted Democratic, no?

Actually, Todd, it looks like the line for the senate seat runs down the middle of Mulholland. But those areas “south of the boulevard” have become as heavily liberal/Democratic as the flats. For the congressional seat, though, it looks like the line does run down the middle of Ventura.

The congressional district that includes Newhall also includes the ridiculously liberal/affluent/Democratic areas of Calabasas, Canoga Park, Encino, Tarzana, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Valley Glenn, Valley Village, West Hills, Woodland Hills, plus the Democratic trending area of Chatsworth, Granada Hills, Northridge and Porter Ranch. The district is very blue and currently represented by Congressman Brad Sherman. The other BIG story is the “nesting” of the SCV into a similarly Democratic state senate district that also joins us with Calabasas, Chatsworth, Encino, Granada Hills, Northridge, Porter Ranch, Tarzana, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Valley Glenn, Valley Village, West Hills, and Woodland Hills, plus loony liberal Topanga Canyon and Malibu. Sure, a portion of Thousand Oaks is included, but the SCV and TO are doomed against the liberal money and Democratic voting tide from those Valley areas. This district lean Democratic and is represented by Senator Fran Pavley. Next door, in Ventura County, it looks like Tony Strickland is finished. In 2008 he was elected by 857 votes. He loses the SCV which he won by 4,578 votes and also loses a big chunk of heavily Republican Thousand Oaks. He gains heavily Democratic Oxnard which Fran Pavley won by 21,234 votes in 2008 and the Fillmore/Santa Paula/Piru corridor where Bruce McFarland (!) outpolled George Runner by 4,040 votes in 2008. That district just got much more Democratic at a time when Tony Strickland has gone tea party conservative crazy. Buh-bye, Tony. This is great political theater.

If you think Petz is going to lose one wink of sleep because Jeff Wilson’s high density abode will be located in a congressional district other than that of Greater Santa Clarita-you are correct. This bizarre redistricting anomaly can only be explained by believing that these people thought that Roger Gitlin still lived south of Lyons. Roger was very precient and sold his hilltop gated home several years ago. That being said Jeff must be in Nirvana-getting the benefit of a GOP community and being represented in congress by a party that wages war on the civil society each and every day. It is also interesting to note that Veteran’s Historical Plaza will be located in a Dem district begging the question whether the Dem politicos will feel any patriotic fervor to attend the Fourth of July Parade, Armed Forces Day and Veteran’s Day services. Just what we need, dueling banjos at each event. Petz urges the Dems rep to stay home and keep the ceremonies within resonable time limits.

LOL-looks like Eternal Valley will be blue too so, Linda’s husband may have a reason to return to Memorial Day Services . Add another twenty 45 minutes for the DEM VIPs. The unintended consequence of political gerrymandering. And let’s not forget that Obama’s political career was launched when his political cronies forced open the divorce records of his senate opponent in IL only to discover that the candidate had asked his wife to visit a sex club in France with him. (Oh my gosh, GOP men have needs too). The Dems are for a large part (pun not intended) loathsome individuals whose have no concept of a double standard for their immoral conduct. Anthony Weiner was showing his johnson to women who did not consent and may have violated interstate pornography laws by violating community standards in doing so. His weiner is a violation of community standards and just because he and his wife (Huma Weiner)had an open relationship about his predilection for flashing his blood gorged vessel popping pole of flesh to young (perhaps underaged) woman does not entitle him to violate the law. So when NY looses two congessional seats in 2012, maybe he can bring his package out to the Northern San Fernando Valley-the home of the porn industry-he will feel right at home in Newhall.

Petz is lashing out with mythical broad assumptions about all Democrats in an attempt to take our attention off of the shenanigans of the local Repubs, who seem to have a problem with financial transparency and some incredibly questionable expenses involving comic books. I think exposed Weiners and French sex clubs are a much less frightening aspect than financial pandering and more than questionable accounting. I’d rather be associated with a party that doesn’t claim the moral high ground even if they do get caught with their pants around their ankles; as opposed to a party that looks down their noses every chance they get…Until their hands get caught in the cookie jar!

And another thing – A few weeks ago everyone was livid that they wanted to break Santa Clarita into different districts and that SCV should be kept together in all districts. Now all of sudden it’s OK to just draw a line around Newhall and put us in a District with the San Fernando Valley??? Really! Really! That’s OK with you Jeff? I live in the City of Santa Clarita. Valencia and Newhall have been my home for nearly 40 years. I am invested in this community and involved in this community. So, no, I don’t want someone to just draw a line and tell me that my community will no longer be represented with the rest of Santa Clarita. Not acceptable!

Couple things: as far as I know, Jeff is in favor of cutting up our council into districts, so no contradiction there. Also, if you’ve been here for 40 years, then you should recall that we’ve been split like this before. I’d normally say one valley, one district. But Buck has been so dreadful when it comes to local issues (despite his major clout with the party and in Congress), it might be a nice to have another pick up the cause of Cemex – or maybe they work together?

Sure, a portion of Thousand Oaks is included, but the SCV and TO are doomed against the liberal money and Democratic voting tide from those Valley areas. This district lean Democratic and is represented by Senator Fran Pavley. Next door, in Ventura County, it looks like Tony Strickland is finished. In 2008 he was elected by 857 votes. He loses the SCV which he won by 4,578 votes and also loses a big chunk of heavily Republican Thousand Oaks. He gains heavily Democratic Oxnard which Fran Pavley won by 21,234 votes in 2008 and the Fillmore/Santa Paula/Piru corridor where Bruce McFarland (!) outpolled George Runner by 4,040 votes in 2008. That district just got much more Democratic at a time when Tony Strickland has gone tea party conservative crazy. Buh-bye, Tony. This is great political theater.

If you think Petz is going to lose one wink of sleep because Jeff Wilson’s high density abode will be located in a congressional district other than that of Greater Santa Clarita-you are correct. This bizarre redistricting anomaly can only be explained by believing that these people thought that Roger Gitlin still lived south of Lyons. Roger was very precient and sold his hilltop gated home several years ago. That being said Jeff must be in Nirvana-getting the benefit of a GOP community and being represented in congress by a party that wages war on the civil society each and every day. It is also interesting to note that Veteran’s Historical Plaza will be located in a Dem district begging the question whether the Dem politicos will feel any patriotic fervor to attend the Fourth of July Parade, Armed Forces Day and Veteran’s Day services. Just what we need, dueling banjos at each event. Petz urges the Dems rep to stay home and keep the ceremonies within resonable time limits.

The unintended consequence of political gerrymandering. And let’s not forget that Obama’s political career was launched when his political cronies forced open the divorce records of his senate opponent in IL only to discover that the candidate had asked his wife to visit a sex club in France with him. (Oh my gosh, GOP men have needs too). The Dems are for a large part (pun not intended) loathsome individuals whose have no concept of a double standard for their immoral conduct. Anthony Weiner was showing his johnson to women who did not consent and may have violated interstate pornography laws by violating community standards in doing so. His weiner is a violation of community standards and just because he and his wife (Huma Weiner)had an open relationship about his predilection for flashing his blood gorged vessel popping pole of flesh to young (perhaps underaged) woman does not entitle him to violate the law. So when NY looses two congessional seats in 2012, maybe he can bring his package out to the Northern San Fernando Valley-the home of the porn industry-he will feel right at home in Newhall.

Petz is lashing out with mythical broad assumptions about all Democrats in an attempt to take our attention off of the shenanigans of the local Repubs, who seem to have a problem with financial transparency and some incredibly questionable expenses involving comic books. I think exposed Weiners and French sex clubs are a much less frightening aspect than financial pandering and more than questionable accounting. I’d rather be associated with a party that doesn’t claim the moral high ground even if they do get caught with their pants around their ankles; as opposed to a party that looks down their noses every chance they get…Until their hands get caught in the cookie jar!

And another thing – A few weeks ago everyone was livid that they wanted to break Santa Clarita into different districts and that SCV should be kept together in all districts. Now all of sudden it’s OK to just draw a line around Newhall and put us in a District with the San Fernando Valley??? Really! Really! That’s OK with you Jeff? I live in the City of Santa Clarita. Valencia and Newhall have been my home for nearly 40 years. I am invested in this community and involved in this community. So, no, I don’t want someone to just draw a line and tell me that my community will no longer be represented with the rest of Santa Clarita. Not acceptable!

Couple things: as far as I know, Jeff is in favor of cutting up our council into districts, so no contradiction there. Also, if you’ve been here for 40 years, then you should recall that we’ve been split like this before. I’d normally say one valley, one district. But Buck has been so dreadful when it comes to local issues (despite his major clout with the party and in Congress), it might be a nice to have another pick up the cause of Cemex – or maybe they work together?
