More on the Apple Store

It opens this Saturday:

A reader reflects on what it could mean for SCV:

Love that Apple is putting a store in Valencia. As mentioned in your previous thread, it’s bigger news than most observers would imagine. People flock from all over So Cal to go to the Northridge store and I expect similar traffic to this Valencia store. It’s a huge win for SCV that should not only bring in more local business to its retailers, but also contribute to the notion that Valencia/SCV  is “the place to be” for home shoppers.

I concur. I think this will bring a lot of foot traffic to the Patios and that can only be good for Westfield Town Center Valencia (or whatever they’re calling it these days) and good for the City. Just think, a portion of all those high-priced aluminum gadgets will go into the City’s coffers. Score!

But more than that, it does signal SCV can accommodate the higher end retail segment. That’s already been proven by the opening of the Williams Sonoma store (the Apple Store of the food-conscious world). By opening a store in the SCV, Apple is telling  other upper-end retailers that, “Hey, the SCV is untapped and fertile. Go there. You’ll find success.”

I’m going to be out of town on Saturday unfortunately, but I predict some pretty solid crowds for the opening. I hope some of you will take pictures and email them to me from your fancy iDevices.

A little secret: even though I’m a PC guy, I was at opening day of the Apple Store in Glendale way back in May of 2001. I have the T-Shirt to prove it. I treasure it alongside my BeOS T-shirt, a Windows Server t-shirt and other excellent computer memorabilia.

Time will tell if this is more Northridge (packed beyond belief) or Simi (relative ghost town), but Simi is half our size, probably less Mac-prone, and has stores in Northridge and Thousand Oaks serving any surrounding areas. We don’t have many areas to pull from, but we will have the closest store for those in AV and Bakersfield, and on balance, it’s probably a more convenient option than Northridge for many in the valley (crowds, parking, etc.). So we’ll see, but for the moment, it looks like the first bit of “destination” retail we’ve seen in SCV. (Am I forgetting something?)

Hmmm, Jeff doesn’t acknowledge your cousin and he gets tagged by a pudding cup? Hmmmmm, I wonder if anyone clocked the speed that pudding cup was thrown at

Me thinks people are reading too much into the arrival of an Apple Store. Is it a good thing? Yes. Will it usher in a new age of utopian consumer bliss in the SCV? No more than what the SCV is enjoying already. Mike: Sherman Oaks & Woodland Hills are probably more convenient options for North Valley residents looking for an alternate location.
  8. MikeJuly 13, 2011 at 2:32 pm
Good point. Your second point, that is. As to the first point, our consumer bliss is being upped considerably. Well, mine at least.
  9. ToddJuly 13, 2011 at 6:25 pm
The Sherman Oaks store is TINY. Never been in there without feeling way too crowded. Glendale and Woodland Hills are both nice tho…. leaving us with just the Antelope Valley. And their isn’t a ton of draw there….

“Untapped and fertile”? Watch your language, Mr. J-to-the-Wilson.
  12. spineflower2July 13, 2011 at 9:08 pm
Wasn’t there a rap sound describing his desire to “tap that app?”
  13. van_smackJuly 13, 2011 at 7:21 pm
Are you the mod Mike? If so, you want that pic? How do I send it to you or Jeff, dont have eithers emails.
  14. van_smackJuly 13, 2011 at 7:22 pm
And what did I get 2 thumbs down for??
  15. van_smackJuly 13, 2011 at 7:44 pm
Haha, not like I care, but who keeps doing that? What, just because its sports, it doesnt belong on here? This is SCVTALK, not applestoretalk or politicstalk. This is a story relevant to where we live and what this site is about. Cant we take 1 second out of the history of this website to appreciate a local athlete?
  16. BrookJuly 14, 2011 at 8:29 am
There is a lot of news that doesn’t get on here – relax. It always make me roll my eyes up when people feel “slighted” because some news story they follow didn’t make it on here. Instead of complaining “hey how come there is no mention of blah blah”, why don’t you just post it and tell us about it positively – without the complaints. This is a volunteer effort on here, without any promise of covering every little detail related to SCV. And @van_smack you forgot about biketalk too, that topic gets more coverage than any other – and thats okay its Jeff’s blog afterall, that he does in his non-work, non-grad school time. I bet if you looked around the links on here you might just find Jeff’s email to share your news topic.
  17. van_smackJuly 14, 2011 at 11:31 am
By the way, you’re one of those people who roll their eyes alot? If I ever rolled my eyes, I would smack myself. But thanks for your input! I will take your comments into consideration the next time I jokingly and sarcasticaly complain once in the history of this website!

Some secrets are better kept to oneself.
  19. van_smackJuly 14, 2011 at 11:19 am
Thanks Brook, Yeah, I have known Jeff for almost 20 years now, It was more of an inside joke between him and I, I guess I shouldnt have put it on here but there are no forums anymore. I have been talking to Jeff for a long time to get a little more sports on here. As long as it pertains to the SCV, I dont see why it should be a big deal, especially when very little sports news come out of our valley. But I guess if I wrote the articles for him, he would never have a problem putting them up. Does anybody remember the last sports story on here?
  20. Phil EllisJuly 14, 2011 at 12:38 pm
    Probably some bicycle race.
  21. van_smackJuly 14, 2011 at 1:15 pm
Hahaha…actually, you’re probably right! Im guessing the AMJEN? Is that correct? Its the one I think where lance Armstrong rides through Town Center drive all roided up and fires Puddin’ Pops into Jeffs back, but Jeff is cool with it because it came from a little man, in spandex, on a bike!
  22. MikeJuly 14, 2011 at 2:01 pm
    LOL
  23. BrookJuly 14, 2011 at 2:07 pm
Does the Summit swin team count as a sport – if so then it was sports, sports, sports all the time for awhile. …okay thats stretching it. I like the idea of you sharing the articles with him about our sports super stars, livens it up around here besides what happened at city council meetings and who was accosted with a school lunch item last.
  24. Phil EllisJuly 16, 2011 at 11:15 am
Yes, swimming is a sport and a big one at that when it is Olympics time. DiLuigi seems to be making a big name for himself. For those that don’t know he played football for Canyon High and is now at BYU.
