A 4.2 shaker hit at 1:50 this afternoon, centered 4 miles ESE of the Newhall area. It was a short, sharp jolt, which I actually felt in my feet. No swaying of hanging lamps, though. A good day to be at home….

Felt it in Burbank. Sharp quick jolt. Looks to be less than 3 miles directly south of my house. Were this the east coast, we’d all be evacuated and shut down for a week! Left coast rules!

That was Petz jumping up and down after he passed his motorcycle driving test at the Newhall DMV in front of about 20 onlookers with the guard stopping traffic in the parking lot. On a Honda 750 too. Doing what he can to keep the planet green.

Yes, for Santa Claritans a 4.3 (per USGS) is simply enough to shoot off a large dose of adrenalin. I remember the aftershocks from Northridge. I could tell if it was a 4.0 or greater because an ocean like wave would flow across the quilt on my bed. Here’s the link to the USGS website for this quake and its so far minor aftershocks: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/FaultMaps/119-34.html USGS used to have even better maps, which were linked to Topozone when it was a free view site, but time marches on, and now we don’t get to quickly pinpoint the actual epicenter online. From the USGS map I can see that today’s earthquake is not plotted on the Santa Susana Fault (in the mountain south of Stephenson Ranch) nor on the San Gabriel Fault (under Golden Valley Road from the 14 off ramp, under the road in front of the condos south of the high school, then off into Bermite). Based on the USGS map alone my guess is that it’s on the Holser Fault (near Granary Square) or Pico Canyon Fault (going west from Lyons Avenue) or on some of the many other unnamed faults we can see or infer in driving through the Newhall Pass. What’s most interesting is that the USGS shows the depth of the original 4.3 tremor as only being .6 miles down. According to old reports from the USC/UCLA/CalTech/USGS Northridge Earthquake study group, the top of the previously unseen Northridge Thrust Fault is pushing out under Steinbeck Street in Stevenson Ranch. Given the fact that most people describe the earth’s movement as a jump or jolt, in many cases that indicates an upward thrusting movement rather than the swaying movement like you get from a “normal” fault like the San Gabriel fault traces in the Santa Clarita area. Hopefully some geology graduate students at CalTech, USC or UCLA will “adopt” this earthquake, do the research, and tell us if there’s yet another fault in Santa Clarita whose movement has to be planned for. P.S. Does Santa Clarita get its own earthquake named after the town, like the Whittier Earthquake, or will this one go unnamed?

A nice shimmy here near Copper Hill & Seco Canyon. Rumor is Bill Reynold’s blames the quake on local illegal immigrants practicing all that Brujeria and Santeria etc………
