  • Employers added 106,000 jobs in September, above expectations, but not enough to edge unemployment down from 9.1% LA TIMES
  • Sheriff Lee Baca has put out a plan to build a new women’s medium- and low-security correctional wing at Pitchess that would house 1,156 women who are currently housed in Century City. The plan costs $1.4 billion would be built by 2016. SCVNEWS
  • The two-cars-over-a-cliff-story just gets stranger and stranger. Apparently Melvin Galfand, the 88 year old man who plunged off Lake Hughes Road 10 days before the other man, was heading to San Diego that day to hit up a casino. No one knows why he drove north from his home in Santa Monica. The family of the man wants seniors to carry cell phones in case they get in trouble SIGNAL
  • Circus Vargas is in town at the Valencia Town Center. The show doesn’t feature animals anymore but lots of high-flying stunts SIGNAL
  • The Department of Education has awarded $1 million to the Fernandeno-Tataviam Band of Indians. The Tataviam were the original SCVers, complaining about August heat the Indians over the hill long before we go there SCVNEWS
  • Hart District ponders a secondary access road for Castaic High school SIGNAL
  • Pet fair this weekend WRB

    A “circus” without live animals should not be allowed to call itself a circus. This is a truth in advertising issue.

    It doesn’t sound strange to me that an 88 year-old man would become confused enough to get on a freeway headed in the wrong direction and become hopelessly lost because he wouldn’t stop and ask for help. His family admitted in an earlier article that he got “slightly lost” on occasion. http://www.the-signal.com/section/36/article/52016/ Then later on in the same article the son-in-law says Gelfand “never exhibited signs of dementia.” But getting lost is a sign of dementia! There was some discussion on the Signal website about the problem of having an older driver in the family and the difficulties of getting them to stop driving when they become a danger to themselves and others. Sometimes the family is in denial as well.

    We cannot get my 86 year old grandmother to stop driving. She totaled one car in a solo crash with a curb. She almost got in 4 accidents while just test driving a new car. The DMV did a full re-evaluation of her and renewed her license for 5 years. Now I just found out she rear ended someone at the beginning of the year. There was no damage, she reported it to insurance but did not tell us. Now we know because they are suing her for chiropractor bills. She still refuses to give up driving and insists she can drive just fine. The whole family has begged her to stop driving. We cannot force her to stop though.

    I have 5 kids who should produce a ton of grandkids so I can be lazy and not have to drive anywhere when I get to that age

    When I saw the story on the family that wants guard rails installed on all the mountain roads, my thought was, no, take away the keys for these older drivers that are no longer in great shape to drive. If the road was truly hazardous, there would be a lot more than 2 cars going over the side. Everyone reaches a point where they are no longer in optimal condition to drive. It’s a shame that we don’t have great transit options here in SoCal, but people need to make adjustments. Move closer to their shopping and doctors, rely more on family, buses, etc. It is not a right to drive, it is a privilege.

    Sean La Vu the son of the man recovered alive gave a dramatic short version of the search and rescue at our Keller Williams office meeting on Thursday. The love, care , and concern that he has for his father unbelievable. The family just kept searching and took the matter into their own hands. There was not a dry eye in the house. What a story.

    Very disappointed in the Values Voters selecting Ron Paul as the winner in a straw poll. Glad Herman came in second. Paul is not worthy of support-much less from “Values” voters.

    The ‘Values’ Voters Summit. Oh, that just cracks me up. Third year in a row it happened to fall on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Loved the cult comment from the Pastor Perry Fan. There was the usual anti- other religions (Islam and now LDS), and people (gays). A true libertarian would not want to win in that type of poll. Goes against the whole live and let live thing. ahem…gary johnson

    Maybe… if that gay Mormon promised not to ask for ‘special rights’ like being able to serve in the military honestly, or being able to marry the one they love… No, never-mind- not even that. Gay Mormon would have to live in the time-share closet.

    I think these straw polls and voter summits just prove that the Republicans can’t make up their minds. Romney was the front runner (probably will be again), then Bachmann won, then Cain, now Paul. I think conservatives would have an easier go if they just spun a roulette wheel.

    Newhall home businesses Why is everyone up in arms over the tennis courts but no one complains about Compa Vineyards in that same area? They are a home business where customers go to the home, I thought that was what made it illegal for the tennis courts?

    Anyone else wonder why Tim Myers seems to have a soft spot in his heart for Priscilla Lofton ? Usually he just bashes any challenger to local incumbents.
