  • A man is in stable condition after being shot in the head while driving through Newhall last night.  Details are sparse.  SCVNews
  • Colt Doherty, the teenage driver from the recent Sand Canyon car crash, is in a medically-induced coma.  More details on Dakota Demott, the passenger killed in the crash, as well.  SIGNAL
  • The high-speed rail line will take a path through Palmdale, HSR board members have decided.  Or it won’t…Mike Antonovich believes funds should be used to increase the efficiency of existing lines.  SIGNAL  And the CEO of the HSR Authority is stepping down, and the chairman is stepping down to become just a board member, most bonds remain unsold, and a poll shows 53% of Californians want the project to end.  So there’s that, too.  BLOOMBERG, ABC

    There were a couple roadrunners out sunning themselves behind the drive through at the Carl’s Jr. on Via Princessa a couple weeks ago too. Odd. Literally I’ve lived in the urban-wildlife interface of SoCal my entire life (aka along the hillsides) and never once seen one until my 35th year…. and they were just chillin waiting for a Double Western Bacon Cheeseburger???? Other people have reported seeing them for the first time on Facebook too… wondering if we’re not seeing an unusual increase in the population locally, or if the warm winter weather is bringing them out. Can someone get some sort of biologist up on this please?

    They’ve actually been on the decline, at least regionally: average declines of about 4.5% per year from 1980 to 2007 in SoCal grasslands according to Breeding Bird Survey data. The mild winter is probably helping, like you said–roadrunner researcher Janice Hughes has said severe winter weather affects populations.

    LSSI has secured contracts with four communities totaling 9 library branches since the Santa Clarita city council voted to contract with them in 2010. It seems the publicity from here hasn’t hurt them (and may have helped them).

    Nevermind the new state law, inspired by our City’s haste.     The fact remains that three cities (1 each in CA, TN and TX) and a county library system in Florida have contracted with LSSI since “the decision (was) made” by Santa Clarita. Perhaps the 10,003 “signature” names should have also been filed with them. Certainly Axl Rose, Fred Flintstone, and Joel Welcome (RIP) wouldn’t have minded. Sorry to break it to you, but AB 438 is meaningless as compliance is not very difficult. Simi used it as an excuse to expedite pulling out of the crumbling Ventura County library system.

    AB438 is not meaningless, as evidenced by Simi’s haste to decide, before the law went into effect. You can’t have it both ways, SS. If it were truly “meaningless,” then Simi had all the time in the world. And, at this point, a pissing contest is quite unattractive.

    I said it then and repeat it now, AB438 is union protectionism at its best and does not, nor did Das Williams intend it to, “protect” the taxpayers.

    Do I need to separate the two of you? Let me weigh in on this moot topic with some information and perspective. Santa Clarita and Simi share many connections, including common legislative representation, so my sources are very good. While it’s true Simi claimed exigency based on AB 438, it’s a well known “secret” that, after Camarillo pulled out of VCL and left Simi as the remaining premier city in the crumbling VCL system, Simi became similarly interested in leaving. By officially “withdrawn” from VCL and then immediately contracting back with VCL for operation of their branch, AB 438 didn’t apply to Simi. So why the rush? I’m told, AB 438 served as justification for Simi to take quick action. Further on AB 438, legislative staffers have mentioned that while it was not killed it was significantly weakened from it’s original form; it began with a referendum requirement and ended with a mandate for a fiscal analysis and a 4 week notice before taking action (apparently the author was unaware that Santa Clarita took action after 6 weeks notice). More recently, the city of Tracy has started the process of leaving their county system, AB 438 notwithstanding. Yes, AB 438 was a reaction to Santa Clarita and Camarillo leaving their respective county library systems, but while it adds a few bureaucratic steps, it doesn’t lock cities within county library systems. As an ironic twist, the same Democratic legislators and governor who passed and signed AB 438 to “save” public libraries approved eliminating all state funding for public libraries.

    On the accident: The anonymous witness said he heard another car revving and speeding away. Colt talked on his Facebook page about racing someone. A death caused by drag racing is VERY serious under California law. There were some rumblings that Marcus Lellan was engaged in a drag race during that high profile accident, but if so he kept his mouth shut because it would have made the penalty more severe.

    Hey Tim, I don’t want to seem overly critical but I had to wince when I see a persons name being mentioned that was believed or rumored to be responsible (at least in part) in another persons death based alone on “rumblings”. I’m certainly a law and order guy but I think we need to pause before we put an individuals name out there ergo further perpetuating the rumbling. Maybe I’m wrong, but I would hate to see someones good name falsely smeared as a result of a tragic event such as this based on mere rumor.

The swerve into the bike lane is a move that is made by racers to avoid a blocking slower car, to keep pace with your adversary. To say it conclusively, I can’t. But witness statements suggest that might have been the motive. No, I’ve never been a street racer… Yes I know some who have been.

    Marcus Lellan plead guilty, served his sentence, and was deported. That case is closed. Believe me one cannot “besmirch” the “good name” of Marcus Lellan.

    IIRC, he was born in Denmark or somesuch, but never really lived there, had no connections, grew up in the USA, but never became a citizen, and thus subject to deportation.

    Nate, West said in his writings the Marines were wrong and I truely don’t think he was trying to justify the actions. He was just wondering where the same pundits were when prior insurgent incidents occurred. I’m not in agreement with that point, but he certainly was not trying to justify the actions of the Marines. The Marines were wrong for doing this, but I hope that these young men are not nailed to the cross in the name of politically correct conjured up faux administrative outrage. The folks who will ultimately determine to what degree these Marines are to be punished probably do not have a clue how personally you take it when some is trying to kill you or your buddy. My true concern is where the senior leadership was during this incident and with the jack ass that decided to film it. Two wrongs do not make it right, but I agree with West that the pundits need to take a deep breath before they bring the sword out.

    Yes you’re right, West condemned it quite harshly. Kevin actually disagrees with West on both accounts. One, he hasn’t served, yet he’s running his mouth, West instructed such people to shut their mouths. Two, he’s celebrating the urination, which West condemned.

    No it’s worse. West’s whole point is that a certain kind of experience is a prerequisite for having a valid opinion, and you agree with that assertion, all while completely contradicting it? What chutzpah! You have this strong opinion about what happened and you think that everyone who disagrees with you should shut up because they haven’t served, but meanwhile you haven’t served? It’s like you’re some veteran-by-proxy.

    I’m sorry Nate that you are incapable of seeing the interconnection between theaters of war in the broader War On Terror. Some have surmised that America’s lack of will to totally decimate enemy forces until which time a full and complete surrender has been negotiated is why the war continues. It is why we had to depose the leader of Libya, why things are devolving in Egypt and why it is likely that Syria will devolve even further into murderous chaos. Radical Islam is far from being defeated. And it is our lack of will to defeat then that is to blame.

    Colonel West is the one that says that the whiny liberal pacifists that seek to undermine U.S. foreign policy with every breach of what THEY feel are violations of human rights need to shut up. All I am saying is that until radical Islam decides it won’t desecrate the bodies of dead enemies, neither should we. I don’t think you should shut up. I like hearing you run your uninformed mouth, discrediting yourself and those that think like you do with every word you utter.

    The reality is that military leadership has stated they will handle this situation. Let them do their job and let us be until we show that we can’t handle that task. That’s how true leadership works. Not just in words but in actions and holding EVERYONE accountable despite what stress you may be going through.

    Ok, lets look at Rep. West’s background and how it factors into his opinion in this matter. Mr West, then Lieutenant Colonel West, was charged with 2 articles of UCMJ due to his actions and allowing as a supervisor certain violations to be committed against a potential terrorist. I understand more than most on here what it feels like to have a fellow soldier killed and wanting some form of revenge. The reality is that my leaders did not allow for that type of illegal response since it was detrimental to who we are as American military. We always operated within the parameters of the ROE(Rules of Engagement) and military law. If we deviated outside of that then there were consequences for said action. You are taught from Day 1 about military values and also Rules of War. To not expect us to live by the standards we have implemented goes against our claims that we are the best and most professional organization on this planet. Kevin, you seem to have an issue with Muslims. Maybe I am wrong but it is the perception I smell from your nasty little comments about us. If you do, I would say that I will allow you to man up and present your beef to me in person as opposed to forcing you to make them from behind a keyboard. Not a threat but I really don’t like people feeling they have to hide in a closet about their prejudices.

    And to caveat further, this is no different than someone who was Caucasian, lived in a predominately African-American community, and had a significant negative emotional event because of such and then going on to dislike African-Americans. Judging other with guilt by association is tantamount to being a moron and is not civilized or rational.

    Our American soldiers are expected to observe a higher standard than any terrorists do do. We are a CIVILIZED society, and disrespecting and desecrating a dead body is wrong, regardless of who or what the remains represented in life. Two wrongs do not make a right, and their military leaders should discipline the soldiers.

    I posted this on the 11th: “I have a ‘friend’ on face book that felt this action was HILARIOUS! I did not respond to this post, instead they have been removed. Their view of this is so extreme and hateful, that I have no need to read about this person’s life any longer. They even went as far as to say that all muslims should be killed. I shudder just thinking about this persons views. Not only is this video disturbing on so many levels, it portrays our Marines in a way that many Marines are ashamed of. When my daughter in law gave us the terrific news this Christmas that she was not deploying again to Afghanistan (she would have left next week), we were so thankful. Every deployment gets just a bit more difficult than the last. I can only imagine the increased hostility our troops will be facing after this incident. These men dishonored their uniform by their actions, and put their fellow comrades in even greater danger because of it. How anyone can find joy in this action, is beyond my comprehension.” The hatred spewed toward ALL muslims (his words) was shocking. Worse yet many of his ‘friends’ felt the same. My daughter in law has many friends over in Afghanistan serving right now, and because of this action by these men in uniform, they may face even more. When atrocities were committed against our soldiers and the media covered it and showed it over and over, Americans were outraged. I cried for them and their families. However, we have always held our soldiers to a higher standard of conduct; that is the American way. My concern now is the backlash that this will cause and the outrage our enemies now feel with our men and women in THEIR territory.
