April 12, 2011 – Daily Brief

  •  A man from Castaic led sheriff’s deputies and CHP officers on a car chase that ended when the man apparently shot himself in the head.  News accounts differ somewhat, but there had been a domestic dispute and/or threat of suicide, which led the man’s family to call the authorities and initiated the pursuit.  SCVNews details the timeline, SIGNAL interviews a witness.
  • Jerry Moon pleaded not guilty to the 17 felony charges he’s facing.  Recall that 18-year-old Moon attended high school locally.  He was arrested after a hushed investigation following the alleged rape and attempted murder of a woman in Stevenson Ranch.  SIGNAL
  • LAFCO has approved four pending annexations for Santa Clarita, including the Vista Canyon/Jakes Way area, which would add more than 15,000 residents to the City of Santa Clarita.  The next step in the process is waiting 30 days for objections from landowners in these areas.  SIGNAL
  • The expanded Santa Clarita Valley Enterprise Zone has been approved and is now accepting vouchers for the associated tax benefits.  SCVCityBriefs
  • President of the SCV Scholarship Foundation, Judith Riley, passed away this week.  She is remembered as a passionate educator and for her record of service and advocacy in the community.  KHTS
  • Don’t give up on Castaic High: Superintendent Challinor says progress is being made and they’d like to open the new school by 2015.  SIGNAL
  • Stephen Peeples continues a narrative begun some months ago: where do independent, artistic, and documentary films belong in Santa Clarita?  This time, he’s asking about the documentary Bully, which covers the topic of school bullying so prevalent in the news and, presumably, of interest to SCV families.  It won’t be opening in local theaters this weekend.  KHTS
  • Bat found, removed, from Barnes and Noble.  Rabies test awaits.  SIGNAL
  • This month in 1972, a time-capsule was buried at the opening of Empire Savings on Soledad.  It was supposed to be unearthed in 2000, but nobody could find it, and it remains buried to this day.  This week’s TIME RANGER may make you want to grab a shovel and find it yourself.

    Not included in the brief was Dave Bossert’s reaction to the council race, which begins by quoting MLK: “Free at last, Free at last, thank God almighty we are free at last” [his capitalization]. The parallels between a city council race and the Civil Rights Movement were more obvious to him than to me.

    LOL, yes he laid it on pretty thick this morning. Considering he isn’t part of the City, I’m not exactly sure what he’s being emancipated from.

    Laurie Ender was elected in April of 2008. On May 27, 2009, Dave Bossert of Stevenson Ranch donated $360 to Laurie Ender’s campaign, which was the maximum at the time.

    No sé.     Fair Oaks Ranch in, and I may be buying my next house, very very very soon in there. (assuming someone will co-sign for us… any takers? LOL!)

    They were having a terrible time there for awhile with burglaries/robberies during broad daylight. Has that situation improved?

    From what I had heard, the Sheriff’s Dept took care of that pretty quickly. IIRC it was a group of members from a particular gang (I think not even an SCV gang) that started targeting the area. Sheriff came in and set up a bunch of UC cars, and caught em all red handed. That was over 2 years ago, has it come back up again?

    Last mention of arrests I found were May 2009, but Hatami mentioned the area on his website as having problems with daytime burglaries. I think you should move to Valencia or Newhall for better schools.

    So, why no coverage from The Signal since the election on anything election related, aside from one article yesterday about Ender conceding? The Signal’s Qwik-e email on 4/10 talked about the polls being open. In the 4/11 Qwik-e, there was no mention of anything even remotely related to the election. Anyone seen the print edition today to see where they placed the article about Ender conceding? I talked to people yesterday that read The Signal and they had no idea what the final outcome was. I am not having election news withdrawal, I just found the whole thing odd. I think it’s a pretty big local story, the mayor is unseated. An incumbent was defeated. Why no follow up with Hatami or Colley? Why not get comments from Ferry, McLean or Weste? I just think there is more news to report, but it seems strangely quiet on Creekside. Anyone have any thoughts?

    Not sure but, I think the attorneys are trying to figure this election out, and who will be the Mayor & Mayor ProTem. Ken has never had his kingdom upset like this before The shock idea is a valid idea too!

    “Ken has never had his kingdom upset like this before….” Quite a classless response, Annette. Does this represent your perspective or that of TBB? My inclination is tO believe that this reflects both of your thinking. Keep in mind that during TBB’s prior stint on the council his caustic personality and penchant for inciting acrimony rendered himself isolated and ineffective; impotent, if you will. The sooner TBB does this to himself (again), the sooner Frank, Laurene and Marsha will bring Bob back into the fold, and together they will (again) sideline TBB. And he will have himself to blame.

    The Ender story was on the front page, above the fold, below the story about the car chase/suicide in Castaic. The Signal’s coverage of election night was pretty pathetic.

    What else can they report on right now? The final (detailed) numbers probably won’t be available for a week, and the blogs will dissect those. It would be a bit mean to ask Laurie Ender “How does it feel to be the third incumbent and the first Mayor to be thrown out of office.” Something interesting would be who he plans to nominate for Planning Commission. There will be many folk thrilled when DeeDee Jacobsen gets thrown off the planning commission. Who did Laurie put on the Parks Commission?

    I do not believe that Dianne Trautman would have endorsed TimBen unless she genuinely wanted to so I am not casting aspersions, but I cannot help but wonder if previous to the election there was discussion of a planning commission appointment. However, I agree that Dianne would be a good choice.

    Jeff ran Trautman’s endorsement letter late in the campaign, but I believe she has an uninterrupted streak of politically supporting TBB going back several years. When TBB spoke before the Dem club in early 2010, Trautman was his liaison of sorts and before he spoke, she spoke passionately for his candidacy. Don’t forget that she lost her seat previously in large part because she supported TBB so vocally in 2010, probably more so than she did McLean, who had appointed her. I remember this well because it stuck with me that she was supporting someone who could have possibly unseated her patron for the Planning Commission. I don’t know either of these people, but that’s just to point out that the support predates any incentive. She’s also the obvious choice for TBB. The votes are almost certainly there for her confirmation, and she fills a really nice gap as an articulate and level-headed representative of a point of view (slow growth, mid-density) that’s held widely in this community, not really represented on the council, and arguably endorsed via the election results. (FWIW, I wouldn’t include myself in that camp)

    I recall in past elections, The Signal offered quite a bit coverage after the election. They even took it to the mundane level of where the candidates were when watching the election results (including pictures). I recall Ender and Ferry spending the past two elections together (prior to this one). The thing that piqued my curiosity was no mention in their daily top stories e-mail blast. The day before, it was “polls are open.” The day after, there is no mention. Today, no mention either, top stories today (in order) are a Magic Mountain ride, education cuts, and the ID of the guy who killed himself in Castaic. To be fair, they have since posted a small article on the mayor position being up in the air, I assume it will be published tomorrow or the next day. I think there is plenty to talk about and plenty to report right now. Ender gave her comment so I am not suggesting they pursue her. How about more from our new/returning councilman? It appears they already interviewed him for some time. How about comments from Ferry about how he plans to work with TimBen, especially seeing as they have butted heads in the past? Comments from Ken? Did we ever get Hatami’s or Colley’s statements on the election results? This is our local small town paper, and this is big news. This is the first time a current mayor has been unseated and only the third time an incumbent was voted out of office. Sure there should be something they can cover. My thought is this….No one expected this at the city or at The Signal. Since this has happened, those in power are going to be angry, very angry. Someone is going to get the blame. You can’t blame the voters and heaven forbid you blame Ender for bringing this on herself. So, you go after who you can, which will be The Signal. They gave her the worst endorsement they could give. They printed letter after letter supporting TimBen until they halted it two days before the election. They have printed letters bashing Ender. The Signal pushed this as far as they thought they could because they never thought this would happen. Say what they want, but so long as Ender won they would be in the clear. Well, she did not. So, the folks at The Signal are running scared now. Times are tough and they just pissed off a major advertiser. They don’t know what to do, so they will do the bare minimum to report on this. All the fluff stories about the election and talking about TimBen’s vision or plans is just going to rub salt in the wounds. So, they keep quiet and let the sting of this subside. I admire The Signal for the original endorsement piece they did not because I agreed with it, but because it took some shots at the status quo. This was a positive sign that they were bucking the pressure from City Hall. But with the election turning out the way it did, I expect they will feel they got more than they bargained for.

    And another thing, the car chase/suicide from yesterday had an original article published. Then there were updates to that article. This morning there was another article about the identity of the man. This evening, there is a third article with in depth details about the incident. It also includes interviews with his wife and sheriff’s department investigators. Seems to me when The Signal wants to cover something, they can do it.

    I saw The Signal reporter talking with TBB for over half an hour on Tuesday night, and the Boydston coverage today two days after the election is limited to a last paragraph: “On Wednesday Boydston said much of his time would be spent taking down campaign signs.” Really? You guys went to J-School and this is the best you can do? Sheeeeet…. Yeah, they refused to cover the Boydston surge by changing their letters policy and when they did mention the Boydston name it was almost in passing and nearly inconsequential. Big time journalism covering the election story right there! Right? They need to stop fearing the projected face and take a good look at the man behind the curtain. After that, they should write that if Ender didn’t have the title of Mayor she may have been battling Hatami for 5th place. Those are some story ideas they can chew on. Peace – Out. The Signal has been the City’s newsletter for years… somebody over there needs to grow a pair and put on their adult pants.

    The Signal is irrelevant because they have lost so much journalistic integrity. They have ceased to be more than a press release paper and like many others have typically failed at researching and doing indepth stories and articles. That is why they are dying. Failing to honestly report on what is going on in the City only hastens their demise. Advertisers want circulation. The Signal won’t get that without better and more relevant reporting. How about a series on how much capital money CLWA has spent, how much has been passed on to current ratepayers (vs. potential new hookups), what capacity their infrastructure is being use at, what are they really doing about water quality, how they are working to lower rates, etc? How about some in the dirt articles about the drug problem out here? How about a post mortem on how much the library switch really cost versus what was discussed at the original Council meeting? How about why we are unable to attract more major, high quality employers (with significant numbers of jobs) out here. How about some real articles on how traffic and environmental quality will change with the recently approved OVOV? There’s plenty of other meaty subjects they could cover that would win them some awards!
