  • Toxic fumes may be/may have been “emanating” from a compost fire in Potrero Canyon, the large undeveloped area west of Magic Mountain. KHTSSCVNews says 6 acres burned as of yesterday afternoon. The Signal report says nothing of toxic fumes. KHTSCVNEWS , SIGNAL
  • On Tuesday, Mission Village, a 4055 home phase of Newhall Ranch, goes before the LACO Board of Supes for final approval. This is one of the larger phases of Newhall Ranch SCVNEWS
  • Signal wrap of Council Meeting doesn’t add much more than we knew yesterday, though they quote Ferry giving “full credit” to TBB for bringing public comment issue to the table SIGNAL
  • Councilmembers Weste, McLean visit sanitation board in Whittier to complain that the board doesn’t hold regular meetings in the SCV, 60 miles north. Also, they raised an interesting question about oil use and prices as it relates to sanitation. All this ahead of expected rate increases next year. SIGNAL
  • Canada Geese and their young are back in Bridgeport, mostly stopping traffic along Newhall Ranch Road but sometimes getting smashed by cars. Instead of hiring an exterminator to kill them, this year Bridgeport homeowners insist that they are used to the annual migration of birds to their watery homes and that the only people running over the cute birds aren’t from Bridgeport SIGNAL
  • Deputies within the LASD’s elite “Operation Safe Streets” anti-gang unit wear special skull & gun tattoos that they “modify [with smoke] to celebrate involvement in a shooting,” according to the Times. The tattoos are similar to those LAPD Rampart officers wore prior to that group’s scandal. The Times says no officers involved in the OSS unit are suspected of misbehavior, rather it’s an “unsanctioned clique” LA TIMES
  • Speaking of Deputies, the latest Merrick Bobb police accountability report showed the Santa Clarita station in a pretty average light, neither rising to the top nor falling to the bottom of the measurements (complaints filed & dealt with). In fact we don’t even show up in the 800+ page report except in three graphs where we’re right in the middle of the pack. Mediocrity…the SCV Way! MERRICK BOBB
  • Six Flags Magic Mountain picked by Theme Park Insider magazine as #1 roller coaster park in the world. SIGNAL How come the Signal hasn’t written about the dirty water the park ejects into the river as LA outlets have?
  • Buck McKeon keeps his word to increase defense spending after submitting a defense budget $8 billion over what was agreed to by Republicans and Democrats in the Budget Control Act of 2011. Total defense budget under the plan would be $554 billion MARINE TIMES
  • Barack Obama endorses same sex marriage, saying his position evolved on the issue due to friends and family. Much like my own I suppose. NY TIMES
  • On this date 40 years ago, LASD Deputies closed their Newhall Substation and moved to the sparkling-new Valencia Civic Center (and now we’re talking about abandoning that). Also read about our famously porous adobe jail houses (one of which is the flower shop by the new library), why LAX might have been built where Granary Square is today, and pay homage to Father Garces, a priest of the Portola expedition, the first European eyes to see these parts.   • San Francisquito Canyon resident and LTE Writer says a bunch of a******** routinely speed up and down San Francisquito Canyon, “flipping us off when we try to slow down enough to go into our driveways.” She writes “I urge anyone who drives this canyon to please respect the speed limit, not cross the double yellow lines and perhaps take a minute to look at the scenery instead of speeding through the canyon and, perhaps, into the local mortuary.” SIGNAL

    Magic Mountain has been accused of sending dirty water to the river by and environmentalist group. It has not been proven. Yes, there trash is present, but I am sure there are other companies trash found in the river as well. Non story.

    I don’t care what people believe, I just like to know what they believe. I guess that is hard when they themselves don’t know what they believe.

    You’re trying to paint him as a Romney-esque flip-flopper? Not so fast. Obama admits his position evolved. he explained it. That’s a day and night difference than Romeny who insists that he’s never flip-flopped and anybody who thinks he did is mistaken.

    So Obama, a Democrat, can change his mind and not be labeled a “flip-flooper,” but Romney, a Republican, cannot. Partisan politics at its worst.

    Romney denies a change ever took place. Obama explains why the change that has taken place. In 1994, Romney said he’d run to the left of Ted Kennedy on gay rights. In 2012 he says he doesn’t even support civil unions. When you ask him about this, he says he hasn’t flip-flopped.

    Look, they all do it. They play to their audience. In a perfect world, you would know what you are voting for. The fact is, you don’t. They all tell you what you want to hear. However, I have to say that I change my mind all the time. It doesn’t make me a flip-flopper. It makes me adaptable and open. I would rather see a person in office who can take in new information than someone who is so rigid an inflexible, they can’t compromise.

    Harry Reid stated quite correctly: “My personal belief is that marriage is between a man and a woman. But in a civil society, I believe that people should be able to marry whomever they want, and it’s no business of mine if two men or two women want to get married. The idea that allowing two loving, committed people to marry would have any impact on my life, or on my family’s life, always struck me as absurd.” Now who would argue with that?

    Compost fire in Potrero Canyon? That would explain the thin, wispy layer of smoke I saw hanging over the Stevenson Ranch area last night around 8 PM.

    The odor of smoke was thick in our neighborhood around 7:30 last night and because we had the windows open to cool the house down, it filled the house too. I’m wondering what sort of toxins we breathed in….

    Just in from Fire Dept: Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a fire on Wednesday May 9th at approximately 3:00 p.m. involving compost and wood chip piles in Potrero Canyon located two miles east of the community of Stevenson Ranch. The property where the piles are managed is located on approximately 7 acres and the fire began as a result of spontaneous combustion. Approximately 100 firefighters responded to the fire where no structures were threatened. Los Angeles County Hazardous Materials squad along with Health Haz Mat responded to the incident to ensure the safety of firefighters and others on the property. Air Quality Management District (AQMD) officials were also called to evaluate the presence of air contaminates and determined there was no concern for residents. The fire was contained by 4:00 am on Thursday morning.

    Remember the cliché “Elections have their consequences”? I have heard it used many times when an elected official has said it to provide rational for pushing their own agenda. But this time, here in Santa Clarita, the results are different. Having a change of heart, our Council Members, are reacting to the public’s message. Moving a section of Public Participation to the front of the meeting and asking for the Sanitation District to hold their meetings in the Santa Clarita Valley are two areas where the public’s voice has not only been heard but action taken. Way to go Santa Clarita. Don’t let anyone ever tell you, your vote does not count, again.

    Where have you been, Petz? Minnesota has been a battleground state for two years now. Their anti-gay policies are the weapons- and at least nine teenagers are the casualties. Maybe things are changing- a May poll has the amendment at only 39% support.

    Other peoples happiness seems to just piss some people off. Why can’t people mind their own business and spend the hateful energy in more constructive pursuits. We are free to self determination, free from Christian or any other religious doctrine. We are individuals and that is what being American is about! Enough H8!
