Legends of the Fall (of Patricia McKeon’s Candidacy for Assembly)

I would have felt the need to lay off the mockery of Patricia McKeon’s ill-starred campaign for State Assembly, but two days on from the election she has STILL failed to acknowledge her defeat (Paul Strickland quickly wrote a gracious concession on his Facebook page.)

Since she has failed to concede I find it only appropriate that we continue to throw ripe vegetables at the cursed undertaking, if only to discourage and deter future incumbent nepotism and South American style spousal dynasty politics, so below I share some inside information concerning the “missteps” and hubris of her Assembly campaign as heard on the street. Feel free to add any amusing anecdotes of your own in the comments.

Bob Haueter allegedly made the following promises to Buck McKeon and candidate Patricia:

He would convince Scott Wilk to drop out of the race (Fail)
He would obtain the endorsement of Cameron Smyth (Fail)
The McKeon campaign would raise more than the Wilk campaign during every reporting period (Fail)
“Polls” as late as Friday showed her coming in a comfortable second (Fail)
He would obtain the endorsement of Tony Strickland (Success, but I I were Tony Strickland I would build a concrete bunker to protect myself from the negative karma that is even now boomeranging his way)

A group of negative mailers against Scott Wilk made it late to the post office, so will probably be arriving in mailboxes all over the District later this week.

The McKeon campaign thought their main challenger was Paul Strickland because of name confusion, particularly in Simi Valley. Ironically, Paul Strickland came a distant fourth in both Santa Clarita and Simi Valley.

The campaign had to pay sign wavers on the last weekend of the campaign due to a lack of volunteers.

Also noticeable was a number of McKeon supporters congratulated Buck on his win (which was to be expected) but also congratulated Patricia on a well run campaign. All without even mentioning Scott Wilk. So I will just go ahead and put this out there. I will personally work to oppose any community healing among local Republicans until 2 things happen. 1. Patrica McKeon concedes the race to Scott Wilk and endorses him for the office in November. 2. Bob Haueter and his shrill wife are sent to another part of the district. Scott ran a masterful campaign that would never have even mentioned Patricia’s vast negative features had she not been working the local electorate over with the false and hypocritical claim that Scott is a ‘career politician’. But healing can happen and if the tasks mentioned above are completed in a timely manner, I will personally work to stoke the fires of healing. But until then, I will continue to share my total dismay at the McKeon cabal’s poor behavior and stubborn attitude towards reconciliation and demand the head of the lying, belligerent Haueters.

Kevin, I don’t think the “emotional distress” heaped on Mrs. Wilk and Scott Wilk’s prominent supporters can or should be forgiven. It was all done in Buck and Patricia McKeon’s name. No candidate, Republican or Democrat, should be allowed to run or acquiesce in a vicious, threatening, venal primary campaign and then be forgiven. That sort of forgiveness only enables future mean-spirited campaigns which are destructive of “party unity”.

I totally disagree CS. If McKeon does the right thing and comes back to the District with the intention of healing the wounds of the recent past we should meet him half way. But I seriously doubt he has it in him.

I understand there will be competitiveness in any election. There are a couple of things though that I have a major problem with. They attempted to open a criminal investigation into Wilk, and then lied about it when they were caught. They have attempted (succeeded?) to control the local press to silence criticism, we know this from Buck’s leaked memo. Perhaps I could forgive this if they were to make amends and lay blame on bad campaign advice or whatever. Perhaps they got a little over zealous in the heat of battle. However, Buck tried to get his wife into office, into a position that she clearly was not qualified for. Buck knew damn well this woman had no business representing us. Yet, he pulled out all the stops to try and make it happen, including getting funding from people wishing to buy favor with him. For this, there can be no forgiveness. Buck McKeon was ready and willing to sell his soul with ZERO regard for the good of the people in the 38th district. For him, it did not matter how we were represented, it was all about him and his wife. This certainly says a lot about this man. Buck needs to ride off into the sunset sooner rather than later. I will do my best to encourage others to vote Lee Rogers come November.

Buck is not going to try to heal anything. The arrogance of the Haueters and McKeons will not allow them to do anything. They won and they are planning on getting the votes of all Republicans in the district. They are very much mistaken. I have a long memory.

I do not know Mr. or Mrs. Haueter, however if they are a branch of the huge LDS member Haueter family from Nevada, the reckless chutzpah they’ve shown is entirely consistent with the reckless chutzpah shown by my late friend Thelma C. Haeuter. “T.C.” would tell me that her family members were an unstoppable force of nature, and that many Haueters had married in to Nevada’s Leavitt family, which produced the well loved, late, great Nevada Supreme Court Justice Myron E. Leavitt. “T.C.” Haueter would tell me that if a person was related to both the Haueters and the Leavitts, they had the potential to be “Masters of the Universe” because of their gene pool and upbringing. As a result, my view is that what the Haueters of Santa Clarita have said and done, in Buck McKeon’s name, is a combination of the Peter Principle and personality traits of optimism and dogged determination that has been passed down through the Haueter family and which is learned by Haueter spouses. So the real tale to be told is how Congressman McKeon treats the Haueters now that Mrs. McKeon’s campaign is over. Will the Congressman show loyalty to those who worked so hard for him, or will he just dump them by the side of the road? For those who are not enamored with Congressman McKeon, be they Republicans or Democrats, now is the time to educate Congressman McKeon’s constituents outside of the Santa Clarita Valley as to his level of care for the health and welfare of his constituents, his level of competence at getting the job done for his constituents, and the level of competence of his House office staff (as opposed to his Armed Services committee staff). If Congressman McKeon and his House office staff are dullards, incompetent, lazy or even down-right evil, it’s up to Santa Claritans to tell the folks in Simi Valley, for example, about that fact. There’s a massive radioactive toxic h@ll hole in the merged McKeon-Gallegly Congressional District in the hills and valleys south of and above Simi Valley called “Rocketdyne” or “Burro Flats” which the Congressman for this merged district will have to deal with, year after year, just as Congressman Elton Gallegly had to deal with it since 1989. To read about that nuclear and toxic mess at Burro Flats which is way bigger than Bermite go to enviroreporter.com and read the stories under the category “Rocketdyne” and “Runkle Ranch”. (Caveat: There is still a company called Rocketdyne, but they no longer own the Burro Flats property everyone calls Rocketdyne. And congrats to Larry Rasmussen for being clever enough to sell Runkle Ranch to a Lennar/KB Homes partnership before anyone realized what was in the hills above Runkle at Burro Flats.) Despite his Republican-ness, Congressman Elton Gallegly understood the public health threat which the old Rocketdyne property represented to his constituents. Congressman Gallegly was never an apologist for the series of defense contractors who have owned and acquired that property in a series of mergers over the last 24 years. Congressman Gallegly has never acquiesced in the Department of Energy’s desire to not fund their share of the cost of the clean-up from the multiple nuclear reactor melt-downs at Burro Flats, and Congressman Gallegly and his staff have been aggressive and reliable in dealing with the U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Energy and the EPA and the California Dept. of Toxic Substances every year since the degree of deadly contamination was first made public in 1989. The clean-up of the massive public health disaster area at Burro Flats is a lot farther ahead today than it would have been without the constant pressure from Congressman Gallegly and his staff. Just think about Congressman McKeon’s and his House staff’s success rate with respect to Cemex. And then contemplate their level of fitness to advocate to protect the public health in relation to the site of multiple nuclear reactor meltdowns, at Burro Flats. Read the stories at Enviroreporter.com to understand what Congressman McKeon will be expected to deal with if he is re-elected. I have 4 friends who live just downhill of Burro Flats in the rustic, hilly Santa Susana Knolls neighborhood. All of them have cancer and one of them lost a son to cancer in his young adulthood, which was attributed to the “Simi Boys” habit of repeatedly exploring and playing in caves in the hills downhill from Burro Flats. My friends are justifiably disgusted and heart-sick that Congressman Elton Gallegly has been taken away from them, and that Congressman Buck McKeon will now “represent” them, just as defense contractor Boeing is getting closer to beginning clean-up of radioactive soils at Rocketdyne. Peruse the campaign contribution lists for Buck and Patricia McKeon. See if you can find Boeing (a corporate person) or Boeing employees as contributors recently. If you want to defeat Congressman Buck McKeon, educate Simi Valley residents about his “success rate” in getting the Santa Clarita-Cemex legislation passed, and remind them that unless they vote for someone else, it will be Buck in the Congressional driver’s seat on the issue of the clean-up of the radioactive soil and groundwater at Rocketdyne/Burro Flats. Somehow, I smell the influence of Boeing lobbyists in the drawing of the Congressional District boundaries so that Congressman McKeon would represent (or mis-represent) the most hard-hit residential neighborhoods south of Rocketdyne.

Correction: Simi Valley and Santa Susana Knolls are NORTH not south of Rocketdyne/Burro Flats. It must be all the perchlorate and volatile organic chemicals in the drinking water in Simi Valley and Santa Clarita, over the years, which messed up my sense of compass points.

Unfortunately, religion does play a part in politics. I was having breakfast with my father and stepmother. The McKeon name came up and my stepmother who lived in Winnetka indicated she walked precincts for him when he was first elected (even though she lived nowhere near his district). The common thread – she is in the LDS church. There was no reason for her to be politicing for him other than the church connection.

Excellent analysis Coastal Sage. Those hills above Simi have been on my mind a lot over the years. I can’t recall hearing anything since the Legislature rejected Cameron Smyth’s proposed Bill that would have set up an over-site committee for the clean-up.

The Legislature and the Governator enacted a California law which set radioactivity clean-up standards for Burro Flats/Rocketdyne. The bill (SB 990) was passed during Assemblyman Smyth’s time in the Legislature, so I assume he voted in favor of it. Sadly, during the last few years of the Governator’s term in office, the management of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) was taken over by pro-polluter political appointees. I will not name names here, but Michael Collins at enviroreporter.com certainly does. When the SB 990 was enacted, Boeing almost immediately filed a U.S. District Court lawsuit to invalidate it, ignoring the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (state’s rights) and arguing that only the Dept. of Energy has the authority to dictate the standards for clean-up of nuclear contamination. As the Federal lawsuit headed to trial, with three of the California Attorney General’s best litigators defending the State of California, all of the DTSC employees and consultants whose depositions were taken “took a dive” on Boeing’s behalf. I read the deposition of the highest ranking DTSC employee, and it was clear that he is a pro-polluter egomaniac, that he was angry at the Legislature and Governor for telling DTSC what they MUST do (rather than DTSC’s arbitrarily exercising its discretion ‘when it feels like it’), and that he was jealous of the Legislature’s deference to the knowledge of a well-known U.C. Santa Cruz physicist who has spent his professional career studying the nuclear melt downs at Rocketdyne and their effect. The conduct of DTSC’s employees concerning SB990 was clearly fit for a John Grisham novel or as a sub-plot in the TV show “The Firm”. As a result of DTSC’s employees stabbing the Legislature, the Governor, the Attorney General’s employees and the People of California in the back, Boeing was able to use the words of the treasonous public employees to destroy what the Legislature and the Governor had done in enacting SB 990. The U.S. District Court issued an order invalidating S.B. 990. When Jerry Brown took office as Governor, his “new” Director of DTSC demoted the 2 most treacherous public employees at DTSC, but as California taxpayers you are still paying their salaries and their pensions. My rule of thumb in terms of how to deal with DTSC’s employees: Treat them as if they are working for Russian President Vladimir Putin…whose grandfather was Lenin’s chef. Lenin is said to have died from poison being gradually put in his meals.

Petz, it’s ironic that on the same day I write about the nuclear contamination mess on Boeing owned property south of Simi Valley in Congressman McKeon’s new district, the June 7th Daily Brief posts this story: http://www.iwatchnews.org/2012/06/06/9104/are-nuclear-weapons-contractors-millions-campaign-contributions-buying-favors It turns out that according to the story linked above, Boeing has significantly increased its campaign contributions to Buck McKeon in the last year. But who can we count on to stand with Allen West and Paul Ryan in the next congress. Petz says no to retaliation…no to retribution…Yes to keeping our eye on the work that has to be done.

I supported Dante…even at the risk of losing the seat to Rogers, we must respect the choice of our fellow voters and get behind Buck. Ok, Petz, if you are under the illusion that SCV voters will vote like sheep, you are mistaken. We have gone beyond that and I personally WILL NOT vote for Buck. I am done, done, done with the mafia-like behavior of Buck and the Haueters. I do not believe that Buck is unaware of the behavior of the Haueters. He is in total support. I will not vote for Buck.

In a few months Mr. McKeon will turn 74. With the passage of Proposition 28, Mr. Wilk, if he wins, can serve In the State Assembly for up to 12 years. Will Mr. McKeon serve another 12 years, to age 86? Mr. Wilk has a long political future ahead of him, while Mr. McKeon’s political future is mostly in his past. Unfortunately, we must endure Mr. McKeon’s inattention and incompetence until age overtakes him, because the dire state of his personal finances prevent him from pursuing the retirement we deserve.

The McKeon’s was a dynasty. Their kids are up next. If finances are an issue, maybe he should sell that big house and move to something more affordable. Hmmm, forget that, if he had any clue about budgets, he would not sign on to nutball bills spending defense money on programs that the military thinks are unnecessary.

It is time for everyone to put pettiness aside. I personally saw lots of ugliness and it was not just on the McKeon side. That aside, if you don’t like Buck, that is fine we are all free to vote how we want. As a republican, if I am offended with Wilk, I am free to not vote for him. Tearing down candidates who have lost, as well as continue to turn over the garbage in campaigns that ALL sides ran, the democrats will come in and take this region and others. From what I read, many of you will be too busy bickering and back stabbing other republicans. The in party fighting needs to stop, and we need to unite to keep this a republican area. Headington must be loving this, oh and he did win the primary, in case you did not notice. Lots of Democrats and fed up republicans in his area…

Todaysgirl: If Patricia McKeon had gracefully conceded after being losing this election, a chance for peace may have been available. It is quite literally insane to expect a single critic of the McKeon’s move to run Patrica to support McKeon without it. It was no error that she did not extend the required courtesy to the winner of a hard fought campaign. The McKeon camp is mad and they are planning their next negative move. Despicable.

coastal sage: Haueter’s have nothing to do with ‘LDS” religion and why is that an issue? Talk about politics but please leave religion out of discussions.

Unfortunately, religion does play a part in politics. I was having breakfast with my father and stepmother. The McKeon name came up and my stepmother who lived in Winnetka indicated she walked precincts for him when he was first elected (even though she lived nowhere near his district). The common thread – she is in the LDS church. There was no reason for her to be politicing for him other than the church connection.

Excellent analysis Coastal Sage. Those hills above Simi have been on my mind a lot over the years. I can’t recall hearing anything since the Legislature rejected Cameron Smyth’s proposed Bill that would have set up an over-site committee for the clean-up.

The Legislature and the Governator enacted a California law which set radioactivity clean-up standards for Burro Flats/Rocketdyne. The bill (SB 990) was passed during Assemblyman Smyth’s time in the Legislature, so I assume he voted in favor of it. Sadly, during the last few years of the Governator’s term in office, the management of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) was taken over by pro-polluter political appointees. I will not name names here, but Michael Collins at enviroreporter.com certainly does. When the SB 990 was enacted, Boeing almost immediately filed a U.S. District Court lawsuit to invalidate it, ignoring the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (state’s rights) and arguing that only the Dept. of Energy has the authority to dictate the standards for clean-up of nuclear contamination. As the Federal lawsuit headed to trial, with three of the California Attorney General’s best litigators defending the State of California, all of the DTSC employees and consultants whose depositions were taken “took a dive” on Boeing’s behalf. I read the deposition of the highest ranking DTSC employee, and it was clear that he is a pro-polluter egomaniac, that he was angry at the Legislature and Governor for telling DTSC what they MUST do (rather than DTSC’s arbitrarily exercising its discretion ‘when it feels like it’), and that he was jealous of the Legislature’s deference to the knowledge of a well-known U.C. Santa Cruz physicist who has spent his professional career studying the nuclear melt downs at Rocketdyne and their effect. The conduct of DTSC’s employees concerning SB990 was clearly fit for a John Grisham novel or as a sub-plot in the TV show “The Firm”. As a result of DTSC’s employees stabbing the Legislature, the Governor, the Attorney General’s employees and the People of California in the back, Boeing was able to use the words of the treasonous public employees to destroy what the Legislature and the Governor had done in enacting SB 990. The U.S. District Court issued an order invalidating S.B. 990. When Jerry Brown took office as Governor, his “new” Director of DTSC demoted the 2 most treacherous public employees at DTSC, but as California taxpayers you are still paying their salaries and their pensions. My rule of thumb in terms of how to deal with DTSC’s employees: Treat them as if they are working for Russian President Vladimir Putin…whose grandfather was Lenin’s chef. Lenin is said to have died from poison being gradually put in his meals.

Petz, it’s ironic that on the same day I write about the nuclear contamination mess on Boeing owned property south of Simi Valley in Congressman McKeon’s new district, the June 7th Daily Brief posts this story: http://www.iwatchnews.org/2012/06/06/9104/are-nuclear-weapons-contractors-millions-campaign-contributions-buying-favors It turns out that according to the story linked above, Boeing has significantly increased its campaign contributions to Buck McKeon in the last year. Until the Haueters are out of California, the volunteer base will continue to work to clip any candidate associated with them no matter where they go. Shipping them “out of district” (ala CA-26) is NOT acceptable.

Let us avoid jumping on Tim Myers bandwagon since he has nefarious intentions while we silently reflect on What would Reagan do? Sure, we all have issues with Buck and his leadership. But who can we count on to stand with Allen West and Paul Ryan in the next congress. Petz says no to retaliation…no to retribution…Yes to keeping our eye on the work that has to be done.

Petz – Nice try but the thugs must go or the Congressman can go with them. Who cares if Buck is standing with West if all the while his thugs are harming my neighbors? If Buck is ok with it, then why do I care if he goes down to defeat? It’s really that simple.

In case you have not noticed…We have a Country to Save…….When an Allen West comes out to support Buck I take notice. I supported Dante…even at the risk of losing the seat to Rogers, we must respect the choice of our fellow voters and get behind Buck. Zink needs help…let us put our time, effort, talent , and resource where it can do the most good.

Ok, Petz, if you are under the illusion that SCV voters will vote like sheep, you are mistaken. We have gone beyond that and I personally WILL NOT vote for Buck. I am done, done, done with the mafia-like behavior of Buck and the Haueters. I do not believe that Buck is unaware of the behavior of the Haueters. He is in total support. I will not vote for Buck.

In a few months Mr. McKeon will turn 74. With the passage of Proposition 28, Mr. Wilk, if he wins, can serve In the State Assembly for up to 12 years. Will Mr. McKeon serve another 12 years, to age 86? Mr. Wilk has a long political future ahead of him, while Mr. McKeon’s political future is mostly in his past. Unfortunately, we must endure Mr. McKeon’s inattention and incompetence until age overtakes him, because the dire state of his personal finances prevent him from pursuing the retirement we deserve.

The McKeon’s was a dynasty. Their kids are up next. If finances are an issue, maybe he should sell that big house and move to something more affordable. Hmmm, forget that, if he had any clue about budgets, he would not sign on to nutball bills spending defense money on programs that the military thinks are unnecessary.

It is time for everyone to put pettiness aside. I personally saw lots of ugliness and it was not just on the McKeon side. That aside, if you don’t like Buck, that is fine we are all free to vote how we want. As a republican, if I am offended with Wilk, I am free to not vote for him. Tearing down candidates who have lost, as well as continue to turn over the garbage in campaigns that ALL sides ran, the democrats will come in and take this region and others. From what I read, many of you will be too busy bickering and back stabbing other republicans. The in party fighting needs to stop, and we need to unite to keep this a republican area. Headington must be loving this, oh and he did win the primary, in case you did not notice. Lots of Democrats and fed up republicans in his area…

Todaysgirl: If Patricia McKeon had gracefully conceded after being losing this election, a chance for peace may have been available. It is quite literally insane to expect a single critic of the McKeon’s move to run Patrica to support McKeon without it. It was no error that she did not extend the required courtesy to the winner of a hard fought campaign. The McKeon camp is mad and they are planning their next negative move. Despicable.
