June 28, 2012 Daily Brief- "....and in other News" Edition

  • Big news of the day is obviously the narrow 5-4 upholding of the Affordable Care Act ("ACA") by the Supreme Court with the help of Chief Justice John Roberts who went all Earl Warren on his conservative sponsors. LATIMES SCVTALK

  • In what would turn out to be a warmup for his outrage over the SCOTUS decision today, our own Petz waxed lyrical about the "Bag Lady" anti-plastic bag presentation that somewhat hijacked the last City Council meeting. IHEART, as usual, has the best summary. In my mind, at least locally, taking the flinty libertarian view against bag bans has become somewhat of a joke. Remember that Patricia McKeon used as her political "creation epiphany" story outrage over the lack of plastic bags at the "Stanch" Vons which became a joke when her REPUBLICAN opponent Scott Wilk passed out campaign REUSABLE cloth bags. Where exactly did Patricia McKeon finish in that election?

  • Corrections and Retractions(?): Gail Ortiz herself called me yesterday to point out that former City manager George Caravalho was not "dismissed" from his Santa Clarita tenure. Potato, pot o to....

  • Hart District touts (slightly) higher graduation and (slightly) lower dropout rates. SIGNAL Unfortunately, in the suburbs this is like celebrating that everyone has indoor plumbing and at least one television set. West Ranch only has six students fail to graduate in the most recent cohort, so there are six kids REALLY in trouble across the 5!

  • Folks continue to celebrate the start of summer by driving off the roads, this time at Placerita Canyon. SIGNAL

  • Are cracks forming? Tutor attempts to check out John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" at local library and can't find it but shelves of Danielle Steele are available. LTE
