  • A woman in the Skycrest apartments on McBean died of a likely suicide last night, deputies say. SCVNEWS
  • Joseph Flores, a 48-year-old man, died on Saturday from a heart attack following a paintball game at Canyon Country’s Paintball USA. Paintball USA says that they urge their customers to take speical precautions in the heat. SIGNAL
  • Mike Antonovich is pushing to place a ballot measure to extend to the terms limits on LA County Supervisors from three terms to five terms (12 years to 20 years). In Antonovich’s case, he could possibly serve until 2024 (that’s 44 years in office, if you’re keeping score). SCVNEWS
  • Patricia McKeon has filed her final form to the FPPC for the June election. My numbers don’t completely add up, but from what I can gather, she raised about $211k, spent about 235k, and made up the difference out of the 40k she loaned to her campaign last year (my math misses about 4k somewhere). The campaign forgave the balance of the loan (21k) and refunded the two donations it received for the general election ($7,800). A campaign debt due to a congressman’s wife would have been a cesspool-in-waiting, but it seems Team McKeon played this one safe. CALACCESS
  • A fight over a parking spot at Castaic Lake sent two people to the hospital on Sunday. SIGNAL
  • Eternal Valley estimates that 100 bronze vases were stolen from the graves of war veterans, including that of Spc. Rudy Acosta. It’s the third mass theft over the last year at Eternal Valley. SIGNAL
  • In addition to the several SCV’ers headed to the Olympics this year, several more call the football stadium at COC their training ground. Interesting read. KPCC
  • The pool project at the County sports complex in Castaic is underway. SIGNAL
  • Anyone every notice the dirt track for RC cars behind the strip mall on Railroad Ave.? I remember when it was being built, some 20 years ago, and apparently it’s something special. This weekend it hosted its 15th annual Hobbies Off-Road Shootout, which is apparently one of the biggest RC car events in the world. SIGNAL HOT ROD HOBBIES
  • Last week’s discovery of a marijuana farm in Whitney Canyon coincided with the release of a UC Davis study that detailed the environmental damage caused by such illegal farms, which often involve illegal pesticides and fuel spills. SIGNAL
  • In something of a vote of confidence for downtown Newhall, SCVtalker Scott Berry is opening an Ice Cream shop, The Whole Scoop, later this year. They recently held an ice cream social at Meadows Park (LADY DUCAYNE) and they are looking to raise some funds through Kickstarter. Like Petz, I’m still reeling from the loss of the Saugus 31 Flavors, so this is a welcome addition. WHOLE SCOOP KICKSTARTER
  • There is an SCVTalk meetup happening at noon, this Saturday at Longhorn’s  Barbecue on Sierra Highway.
  • Lastly, in breaking news this morning, a man is presumed to have drowned in the backyard of his home on Frisca Drive in Saugus/Valencia. KHTS SIGNAL

    As newly minted DtNA (Downtown Newhall Adjacent) residents , my wife and I are looking forward to The Whole Scoop! Speaking of…. spent the weekend moving… Jeebus Crust it was HOT! My AC didn’t shut off (thanks to the door being constantly open for the Russians carrying the heavy stuff) until almost 9pm last night. Welcome to the new house!

    Not Newhall, Newhall Adjacent. We’re in Circle J Ranch… which technically is in Saugus… except that you have to go through Newhall to get there. So I proclaim it to be Downtown Newhall Adjacent. So sayeth I.

    48 years old and died of a heart attack? Venue should not be held responsible because an otherwise healthy, properly hydrated person would have survived the competition even in the extreme temperatures, but the detail in the story given by them seems almost like the statement of their defense.

    The man was a neighbor of mine… literally just a stone’s throw away from my unit in the complex (old place). I didn’t know him, didn’t notice any buzz around the complex Saturday evening or Sunday. Terribly sorry for his family’s loss.

    Here’s a Signal story worth discussing: http://www.the-signal.com/section/36/article/71015/ It certainly explains why certain letters to the editor were never published and why columnists have had to engage in significant fights with The Signal’s editors in order to keep specific sentences in their editiorals from being deleted. Many editorial writers have to bring 2″ stacks of paper to The Signal offices to “prove up” a single sentence in an editorial. To me, the hiring away of The Signal’s General Manager by any politician is proof positive that the newspaper has been “pandering” to certain politicians and interest groups. Now will The Signal now publish a story about the continuing spread of illegally high quantities of carcinogenic volatile organic chemicals in the drinking well water northwards and westwards from Bermite, including the exitence of those VOCs just a few feet below the ground at the Santa Clarita Metrolink Station and surrounding properties? Not bloodly likely. The conspiracy of silence continues. The Signal wants to focus on “perchlorate” which is the less detrimental chemical flowing out of Bermite. The Signal doesn’t want to tell its readers that high levels of VOCs in the near-surface ground water in Santa Clarita can up-gas into homes, condos and apartments making people chronically sick or giving them cancer.

    I personally know Thomas and he is one of the most honest and concerned men I know. Mckeon just rose a couple steps on my list because of this hire.

    Morris is a great guy – concerned about our community and actually invovled with a number of community groups.Unusual for the political types. I am sure that Morris will do a great job.
