- First he was a Democrat, then he was a Republican. Former COC trustee Ernie Tichenor pleads guilty to the felony of using the internet to "facilitate certain offenses with a child" in Virginia and will serve at least six months in prison. YIKES! SCVNEWS I personally knew Mr. Tichenor and I will admit I never saw this coming!
- Homeless black man allegedly assaulted in the KMart parking lot by Hispanic man shouting racial slurs. SCVNEWS
- Dr. Lee Rogers campaign launches the PAYITBACKBUCKwebsite relating to Buck's purported benefit from his Countrywide VIP loan. Graphics make me wonder if Claim Jumper will be issuing a cease and desist letter for copyright infringement. It is perhaps my age, but I find this somewhat juvenile, similar to the campaign tactic of Democrat Robert Rodriguez in 2006 sending someone in a chicken suit to Buck's public appearances because Buck would not debate him in that campaign.
- Permanent Solution to a Temporary Problem I: Quarrel with girl friend causes 29 year old man to jump in front of a car on Soledad Canyon Road at a place where cars are really going quite fast. SIGNAL Man's injuries are "life threatening."
- Permanent Solution to a Temporary Problem II: Young man takes himself hostage with a gun and then runs away, leading to substantial Sheriff's activity in Canyon Country. SIGNAL
- Kim Rhodes, the Olympic gold medal skeet shooter who set a US record by medaling in four different Olympics, actually trains in Newhall. SCVNEWS For those unaware of her dominance she had actually clinched the gold before the final round of skeets.
- I can't locate the story on the website, but it is in the print edition and e-edition of the Signal. Damage estimates to the Northbridge Grandview pool rises to $450K and it appears that vandals systematically poured seven cans of paint throughout the pool. Water has been drained however. Comments on the original story are getting ferocious and some have been deleted. SIGNAL
- Austerity's a bitch! Only ten CSU campuses will allow applications for SPRING 2013, primarily from folks holding associate degrees from community colleges, and CSUN is not among them. SCVNEWS KHTS has the same article (SCVNEWS and KHTS report news jointly) but their headline states that no new applications in the FALL, which would be a much bigger deal. KHTS
- Kyle Boller, Hart High phenom and Cal and NFL quarterback, retires after eight years in the NFL and one day after signing with the San Diego Chargers. The local sports hero spent five seasons as a starter with the Baltimore Ravens and three as a backup with the Rams and Raiders. KHTS
- Perry Smith, the Signal's new education reporter, is certainly making a splash. Today he pens a long piece on confusion surrounding Canyon High government teacher Linda Storli's "zero tolerance" policy on cheating on the government class final resulting in failure of the entire class, a policy she has had for nine years but only recently found someone cheating. District officials overturned the student's failing grade (the piece doesn't say, but I 'spekulate' the student in question got a zero on the final and then the grade indicated by other work in the course) and she, some former students, and members of the Hart Board are not happy. SIGNAL Hart assistant superintendent for instruction Vicki Engbrecht makes some unfortunate comments about how penalizing grades for cheating "runs contrary to all the research and all of the training, over the last five years on grading practices, on reducing D and F grades, on making kids feel more successful.
