Great picture of Valencia – taken shortly after my wife and I moved here. I wanted to see more, so I dragged my mouse across the picture and of course nothing happened. Just goes to show what we expect nowadays.Heh. But we do have a way to go back in time and see the SCV as it evolved. Google Earth features historical imagery of the SCV going back to 1994, about 8 years after the shot above was taken, but interesting nonetheless.
Here's a rough look at the same spot of land in the photo above from May 1994, just a few months after the quake:
No more Valencia sign. You can see Vlaencia Marketplace wasn't quite built yet, though grading had begun next to the camping store. Stevenson Ranch was fresh. Sunset Pointe was just about fully built out by this point in time.

The Valencia sign wasn't painted onto the ground at McBean. It was made out of small white boulders. You could tell once you got closer to the offramp. I remember it well.Obviously NL&F took pride in the land they inherited from old Henry Mayo. That's some incredible attention to detail to use small white boulders to make a sign.
I'm a big fan of mountain signage advertising a community. It works for Hollywood. Santa Paula has it, and I think Fillmore does too. We should resurrect this concept and put a giant Santa Clarita sign on Oat Mountain. Who's with me?
