April 15, 2013 – Daily Brief

Hello and happy Tax Day fellow SCVers! I'm happy to announce the return of SCVTalk...now with comments! In partnership with SantaClarita.com, I'll bring you news, commentary and analysis and hopefully a bit of humor too. It's been nearly five months since I've blogged (you can thank this little guy for that), so I'm a little rusty but let's jump into our first Daily Brief, shall we?
  • Coroner investigators hope to identify the body of an Hispanic woman who was found last week in San Francisquito canyon. The woman's remains were "mummified" so the coroner's office has a plan to re-hydrate her fingers, in hopes of getting a fingerprint. For now, she's known as Jane Doe #23 SIGNAL
  • A 31 year old Sheriff's Deputy from Valencia is accused "of repeatedly punching a 19 year old inmate in his custody" according to the LA County DA's office. The DA's report says Matthew Funicello struck the inmate "several times with his fist while the inmate was in the backseat of his patrol car" in July 2011. KHTS, SIGNAL
  • More than 6,000 people gathered at Central Park yesterday to celebrate Earth Arbor day. KHTS
  • AMS Fulfillment, a shipping and fulfillment firm, will lay off up to 200 employees after losing a contract with a major shoe maker, TOMS Shoes. According to a report in the SFVBJ, TOMS couldn't find 500k sq. ft. of warehouse space in the SCV, so they took their business elsewhere. SFVBJ
  • An eight month old Castaic child fell from a sofa onto tiled floor yesterday and was flown by helicopter to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. A Signal commenter asks why s/he keeps reading that children in the SCV have to be flown to CHLA when Mayo is close by. No word on the child's condition. SIGNAL
  • County Registrar official complains that it would be too difficult & costly to move Santa Clarita school, water and other municipal elections to even-numbered years. The Districts -unanimous in support of the change- say it would save them money. A decision may be made by April 30 at the Supervisor's meeting. Good report by Luke Money at the SIGNAL
  • A 20 year old Valencia woman has been charged with felony hit and run after colliding with a bicyclist on Wiley Canyon road last month. The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was permanently and seriously injured according to the SIGNAL
  • Odd: LASD Crime report says someone's car was burglarized on Walnut Street late last month. Stolen items include school books and Iraqi currency (???) SIGNAL
  • Neat: The City's Arts Commission has narrowed down the list of artists who will design and build an art piece fitting "with the overall character of Newhall." The piece will be installed at the new round-about at Newhall & Main, and all six finalists' proposals will be visible online before an October decision is made by the City Council SIGNAL
  • The 5 Freeway between Lyons and Highway 14 will have up to three lanes shut down in both directions this week due to construction of a new truck lane. The closures will happen between 9pm and 6am. CBS2
  • A group called the National Taxpayer Advocate has put together a list of 350 communities to "identify clusters of potential tax cheats in more than 350 communities." And would you believe it, Santa Clarita, Valencia, and Canyon Country are on the list! WAPO
  • Celebrities in the SCV Part 1: TV News personality & SCV resident Rick Chambers gets interviewed by KHTS' Stephen Peeeples. Chambers recalled how, when he moved to So Cal from Miami in 1992, Santa Clarita was thought of as "pretty far out there." Chambers thinks the biggest problem facing the SCV is heroin abuse. Good interview by Peeples. KHTS
  • Celebrities in the SCV Part 2: We're not "pretty far out there" anymore, because Brittney Spears was spotted at a Santa Clarita Ralph's supermarket on  Saturday. I'm trying but I can't identify the Ralph's...perhaps the one in Granary Square? SOME CELEBRITY GOSSIP BLOG
  • No one lives and dies in Santa Clarita, they just raise their kids and move out: Myers, a one-time SCVTalk blogger, local political forecaster, and clever columnist announces that he and his bride -now empty-nesters- will leave the SCV for Irvine in the fall. I'll miss his columns. SIGNAL

Welcome back, Jeff! Let me start by correcting that 'celeb' magazine; that is not a Santa Clarita Ralph's. The address is on one of the photos that was taken. That is the Agoura Hills Rslphs on Kanan Rd.

Welcome back Jeff. Happy you've brought it back! Nice to have a partner handle the (not necessarily heavy) lifting. I'm with Lynn, that looks just like my in-laws' Ralphs @ Kanan and Thousand Oaks Blvd. And the address even matches! And being as how she lives in Thousand Oaks now.... As to why kids are airlifted to CHLA.... Well, the alternative is Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.... what would you do? In all seriousness, its the only pediatric trauma center in the county.

Thanks for the link to the column Jeff! This will be a great resource where we can check on things from afar, especially during the 2014 election.
