- Some 15 Santa Clarita Valley runners competed at yesterday's Boston Marathon, where two bombs killed three and injured hundreds near the finish line. Jim Holt at the SIGNAL interviews several of them, including a 70 year old man who used to live in the SCV and the father of a 27 year old Santa Clarita woman. A COC photography instructor also ran in the race, and described the scene via phone to COUGAR NEWS while a pastor at The Sanctuary Church in Canyon Country "crossed the finish line approximately 15 minutes before the explosion," he told Perry Smith at KHTS
- Meanwhile in Boston, the FBI has cordoned off an entire square-mile of downtown Boston as they investigate the bombings. Thousands of office workers aren't expected to go to work and some schools are shut down. NY TIMES
- At its board meeting Wednesday night, the Hart District will discuss naming the new Castaic High school. I favor Ramona High School, given the school's proximity to Rancho Camulos, the place that inspired Helen Hunt Jackson to write her popular 19th Century novel Ramona. Cameron Smyth, interviewed by the VeCo Star, hinted that McKeon is considering retiring, saying that the blog post "didn't contain any new information," And then there's frosh Assemblyman Scott Wilk, who says Smyth has dibs on the 25th. Both Wilk & Smyth looked down upon speculation that Tony Strickland, the failed GOP candidate in Ventura's 26th District, might pull "a bait and switch" and run in the 25th. VECO STAR
- Meanwhile, the Buck Stops Now blog wonders what's next for McKeon, who turns 74 next year. "Speculation that the anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-immigration, anti-labor septuagenarian will accept a high-paying job as a lobbyist for the defense industry has been fueled by sightings of McKeon dropping off copies of his resume at various offices on K Street," says the BLOG
- Speaking of Buck, a new report from THE HILL says the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee is "warming up" to new SecDef Chuck Hagel. Hagel, you'll recall, was smeared by the right after President Obama nominated him for SecDef, but McKeon has nothing but praise for him. "I feel very good about him at this point. I have just been very impressed." The Hill says McKeon's warm fuzzies are probably related to a hand-written thank you note Hagel gave to McKeon for his insights during a Pentagon budget meeting. - And over at the BEACON, Chris Sharp has a great interview with Wendy Albright, an up-an-comer conservative who was elected to the 38th Assembly District Republican committee. Sharp asks Albright about her background and her work in rescuing large dogs, then dives into local GOP politics. Albright says Republicans are strong in the SCV because of their volunteer base, a sense of community, and a strong sense of self-reliance since the Santa Clarita Valley "is geographically cut off from the rest of the state." Albright also describes herself as a RINO hunter who will call out powerful GOP officials if they are not conservative enough BEACON
- An indie film called Only the Young is getting some positive buzz from film press. Shot in and taking place in the "dilapidated city of Santa Clarita," the film depicts three teenagers as they grow up, interact, and wonder about their future in the SCV. I've seen that film, it sounds like a biography of my life in the mid 90s. FILM FESTIVAL
