  • The a******* youth flag football coach who allegedly decked a 17 year old referee last month in Valencia is being charged with a misdemeanor battery count against a sports official. A Detective, after interviewing some 13 witnesses, wrote in his report that the man, identified as 35 year old Castaic man Ahje Palmer, "confronted the 17 year old referee in the middle of field yelling about a call. He then struck the referee once in the face, knocking him to the ground."  SCVNEWS says punishment for battery on a sports official carry steeper fines & jail times than normal battery charges; Palmer faces up to $2,000 in fines or a year in jail or both. He is no longer a coach as well. SCVNEWS
  • City Council meeting: Our trash fees are going up, you could go to jail if you don't fix that crack in your driveway (but don't worry, the City promises to be reasonable), and some 17,533 properties in the SCV are now no longer considered to be in "very high fire hazard severity zones," which might help your home insurance premiums.  Also, oak tree forts with indoor plumbing? BEACON on the fire maps, SIGNAL on the trash, and I HEART with his report. 
  • Two women were seriously injured in the Saturday night three car crash at Newhall Ranch & Copper Hill, and a 32 year old man has been charged with a felony count of driving under the influence of alcohol. Michael Guebara "ran a red light and hit two cars making a left-hand turn from the other direction," according to a Detective. SIGNAL
  • After blackening 149 acres and worrying officials all day at West Ranch High and other west side schools, the Six Flags Magic Mountain fire was doused by 6pm last evening. No evacuations of either the park or schools was ordered. Three fires in two days all in the same areas (Castaic, Val Verde, Six Flags)...is it worth asking if we have pyro on the loose ? SIGNAL
  • The 19 year old Canyon Country man who allegedly stabbed another man last week plead not guilty to attempted murder charges yesterday. Deputies think the incident was gang-related. KHTS
  • The Castaic LAPD officer who was arrested last week on charges of molesting two 10 year old girls has lawyered up and issued a press release saying, "Officer Schiappapietra has no record of criminal wrongdoing...with wild allegations already having gone public, let me be clear, there are no claims of penetration, oral copulation or molestation in any way, shape or form." The lawyer says there's been a "rush to judgement" about the officer. SIGNAL
  • SCV Sheriff's Station announces they'll conduct yet another DUI/Driver's License checkpoint at some location in the City this Thursday night. But there's an interesting twist to the announcement; whoever wrote the press release went to the trouble to see how cost effective DUI checkpoints are, yielding "considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent." Not sure what that means, but the ongoing DUI checkpoints, which often net less than one or two drunk drivers and several for driving without a license or other violations have been criticized as wasteful and a hassle for the 1,000 or so vehicles usually screened.   • SCV Good Eats: Petz made it into the opening of Newhall Refinery last night, reporting that the gastro-pub has a fine selection of beers on tap, delicious house fries, and was full by 5pm. FACEBOOK Meanwhile, fellow SantaClarita.com blogger Lady Ducayne reviews Tri-Tips, a locally owned place that while not technically BBQ, offers some tasty tri-tip sandwiches and what not. She concludes that it's a good, not great restaurant where you can order a giant meet sandwich called the "Monster Shred" (she has pics) and not be judged. LADY DUCAYNE And over at SCV News, Jennifer Fischer asks what the best pizza place is in town, and concludes it's likely your own kitchen. SCVNEWS
  • Arts & Entertainment: Yesterday we learned the line-up for the City's Summer Concerts in the Park series; today COC's Performing Arts Center releases its line-up for the 2013-14 season, including "legendary comedian and actor" Sinbad in August, the Wynonna Judd and her new band, and country music group Lonestar. This is a pretty incredible lineup. SCVNEWS
  • Facebook LTE writer complains that the coyote problem is "getting out of control" in the SCV after another neighborhood cat was taken in broad daylight by a coyote. He thinks there's an "outbreak" of bold, fearless coyotes preying on SCVers and wants the City to do something before someone starts shooting the animals. LTE GROUP
  • Yep, Gary Horton is becoming a Republican: he credits the GOP to opening his eyes to waste, fraud and abuse in the state and federal government and criticizes the EBT card system. SIGNAL

I want to wish my first and only son, Everett, a happy day as he turns six months old today! Here's a pic of him beating up on a toy prior to being fed rice cereral for the first time!

    Unless things have changed, someone should alert the state as to Sinbad, he owes the state a lot of cash for back taxes. If I remember correctly, I think it was in the six figures range! Nice pick of EW!

    Hate to say it, but this is probably the least interesting PAC lineup I've seen in a long time. In their prime, Sinbad and Paul Reiser were very funny. If they've still got it, those might be good shows, and I ought to see Hal Holbrook while we still have him. But my anti-country music bias runs deep.

    I really wish they had more big-ticket speakers. I know they've tried, and they probably didn't find enough interest out there. Bourdain was amazing, a nice mix of cerebral and popular. But college lecture-circuit types are probably a very hard sell in SCV.

    I personally know the 17 year old referee and this is a relief for the family. The a-hole coach (probably "coached" by his assistant who is a sheriff's deputy) claimed that he was defending himself after the referee struck him to make it a "mutual combat" situation where the charges are generally not prosecuted. He also at some point claimed the referee was 6 foot four and weighed 220 pounds (in lifts and with a fat suit maybe) and he was frightened for his well being. As far as the "thorough investigation," I also know that the father of the referee gathered up (at least) 13 written witness statements about the incident that supported the assault story. Thanks God people were willing to step up and get involved!

    Wish the city would invest in some trash receptacles around the city. Having them located on the paseos, and in parks, is not enough. Granted much of the trash on our city streets is just tossed there, or falls from vehicles, but I believe having trash cans will help. Like the one on the south east corner of McBean and Tournament. I called just last month because it was so full trash was spilling over.
