With great reverence and solemnity, the SCV welcomed the travelling Vietnam Memorial Wall to Westfield Town Center yesterday. Westfield hung purple banners designed by local artists at the mall, CITY BRIEFS took photos of the wall being put together yesterday after it arrived, the Signal has an emotional piece with interviews of folks who knew those who were KIA in Vietnam, and SCVTalk reader James Farley took some pictures at the Wall during the opening ceremony, which was attended by 700+ people, with 14 empty chairs representing the 14 SCVers who were killed in the war.
If you missed the opening ceremony, don't worry. You can stop by the wall all weekend while it is in town.
Let the Hart Board sweepstakes begin...again: Now that Fall has fallen, the Hart Board is, for the second time this year, taking applications to fill the board seat vacated first by Paul Strickland, who moved to Florida, and next by Chris Fall, who did a cost/benefit analysis of the Board seat and found that it wasn't worth it. Some great detail and reporting in Perry Smith's piece on Tuesday night's Council meeting. The City Council, citing potential conflict of interest, the advice of its Counsel, and for other reasons, won't take a position on which of the four chloride cleanup options the community ought to pursue with the Sanitation district & water quality board. Recall that Councilmembers Kellar & Weste sit on that same Sanitation board; hence the conflict of interest. KHTS
Facing jail overcrowding thanks to Gov. Brown's realignment plans, County Supervisors voted Tuesday to rent 512 beds in the CIty of Taft's jail system for a cost of $75 million. Taft is in the Bakersfield area. SIGNAL
Nice: SCV Deputies tracked down the man they shut down much of Newhall to find a few weeks ago. Hugo Carillo, 30, was arrested way up in Sacramento and is a suspected gang member. In July, Deputies sealed off areas around Apple, Valley & Peachland, brought in their helicopter, and combed the neighborhood for an hour or two looking for the man. KHTS
Great Beacon interview with Dr. Marc Winger, super of the Newhall School District. Winger talks with Beacon writer Chris Sharp about the federal Common Core Standards, which Winger likens to a "revolution" in education. BEACON
Speaking of education, the Signal wants you, dear reader, to report for free on education and schools in your community. You'll get your name in the paper. Who else misses education beat reporter Tammy Marashlian? She was one of TMS' greats. SIGNAL
Ooops: Kevin Korenthal, local conservative activist and a pal of mine, was caught plagiarizing by fellow SCVTalk blogger Mike Devlin yesterday. The thread is in a closed (and new) SCV Facebook group, but Korenthal admits that he did indeed quote a Cato Institute report without attribution in a December 2012 op/ed on taxes and the economy. The passage is nearly verbatim copied from the Cato report; in the thread, Korenthal says it was a mistake not to quote the report and that he apologizes and will inform the Signal about it. At least he's owning up to it, unlike the two other columnists caught by local bloggers plagiarizing pieces in the Signal op/ed pages.
Don't miss it: October 11, Star Party, COC Canyon Country campus, fun. A NASA research astronomer will be on hand to deliver a presentation on the Kepler space telescope and the hunt for Earth-like planets in other solar systems. And of course tons of awesome and really great astronomy buffs will be on site with their 'scopes set up for your viewing pleasure. Great Time Ranger this week in which Boston chronicles some really odd, introverted, and almost disturbing loners who called the SCV home in the 1940s and 50s. Also, on this date in the 70s Newhall Land & FARMING grew a million pounds of walnuts. Also, so many gun fights in the history of the SCV. BEACON

Help me out with this one... are not Kellar & Weste appointed to the Sanitation Board because of their position on the City Council, as the official representatives of the City, representing the City's interests? If so, is it not their duty and responsibility to take direction from the City Council as a body in whole? That would be like saying the City's official position on Building a Freeway is "Yes," then having our voting delegate to the "Freeway Board" vote no because that is their own personal feeling, and the City Council was prohibited from giving direction on the vote. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how there would be any conflict. The reason they sit on that board is to serve as the voice of the City Council.

I don't get it either, but I guess the council doesn't have to take a position on the matter, though it would be nice to hear what Mss. McLean and Weste think about this.

This is the astronomy event that used to be held at the Valencia library, when it was under the county? Also, the guy that was caught in Sacramento -- was this the guy who was reported to be walking down Apple street with a rifle?
