An LASD Deputy who lives in West Ridge but does not work out of the LASD's SCV Sheriff Station, is on paid suspension after firing his gun at or in the air to "warn" some kids who were ding dong ditching his home. The Deputy, Sung J. Pak according to the Signal & KHTS, was ding dong ditched twice, and the second time, he actually chased the group of 15-20 youths (from younger kids to teenagers) out of his home until he a few of the older kids turned to "confront" him. At that time Pak discharged his service firearm into the air "as a warning shot" according to LASD's spokesperson. Signal comments predictably alive and hot with most saying they hope the Deputy is fired for using way more force than necessary. SIGNAL, KHTS

“The way the route is supposed right now, we would get all of the impact and none of the benefit,” Councilwoman Marsha McLean said to California's High Speed Rail Board of Directors about the proposed alignment for the HSR train through the SCV. I wouldn't say we'll get none of the benefit. If HSR was a huge, amazing success (many doubt that), it would no doubt remove vehicle traffic off I-5. Which would harm sales tax generation for the City and County, but probably make for better air quality in the SCV. Anyway there's every indication that the HSR authority doesn't care about impacts on the SCV; we're just a strategically placed valley as evidenced by all the other infrastructure that runs through but doesn't terminate here. Don Guglielmelli, the CEO of a nutritional supplement company in the SCV, has had his bail of $2 million revoked and is currently awaiting arraignment at Pitchess North. More color on Guglielmelli in Jim Holt's piece, and of course some interesting Signal comments about his wife. SIGNAL

Petz mad that political correctness forces have resulted in even schools in the SCV ignoring the great and noble holiday that is Columbus Day. "This hemisphere was civilized by the Europeans who landed on it's shores, and the day should be celebrated like any other national holiday. Neat story about a local company called AMS Fulfillment that has partnered with the SCV Sheriff's Station to hire youths who are at risk, either for a life of crime or something else. AMS Hires them, builds them up, and trains them to be productive members of society, and the program requires them to finish high school and encourages them to keep studying and working hard. KHTS
State Senator Steve Knight stopped by Valencia & Saugus High as well as Rio Norte Jr. High to talk to students, teachers and such. He hopes to tour 100 schools in his district by the end of next year. Hey Pavley your turn! Has Fran Pavley even been to the SCV? Or north of Calgrove? Okay, maybe north of the 118? SIGNAL
October: 'tis the season for protests? Last weekend, on my way out of the vile, blighted, gang-infested hellscape of Newhall that i used to call home I witnessed a bunch of Catholics standing at Lyons & Orchard with banners and signs exhorting the SCV's largely Mormon community to pray the Rosary for America. How many non-Catholics even know what a Rosary is anyway? No you don't wear one as jewelry. Anyway, I don't know what they were on about, but today there will be another protest at McBean & Valencia against the government shutdown & debt crisis. Thankfully this stuff is far away from my quiet Calgrove neighborhood, where we only busy ourselves getting up in the neighbors' business. FACEBOOK

Is Calgrove a good neighborhood for trick or treating? Does anyone know? I have an adorable 10 month old and a train outfit (my son, like me, is a fan of alternative transportation) and I want to take him out for the first time. Or should I hit up Valencia? Which SCV neighborhood is the most liberal with the candy handouts?

Firing a gun into the air because of a ding dong ditch? Were the ding dong ditchers wearing hoodies and "walking suspiciously?"

The trick-or-treating game in SCV is largely a function of how many kids live in a given neighborhood. I neighborhoods with few (or older) kids, many houses don't give out candy at all.

In my neighborhood, most of the kids have grown up, but baased on many years tradition and the efforts of the homeowners, the trick or treat head count will be in the hundreds. One year we counted five hundred. Former neighbors all come back and former nighborhood kids now come back with their kids. Re Columbus Day - I have never known schools to celebrate by having the day off. Besides, we all know that Columbus really was not the first European to land on American shores..

Try trick or treating around Bridgeport lake. A nice walk, lots of nicely decorated houses, and I don't think your baby is in it for the candy.

Clarification on the AMS story: The partnership is actually with the SCV Youth Activities League center in Val Verde. It’s one of 17 YAL centers the nonprofit Sheriff’s Youth Foundation has throughout the county.

That wasn't a protest, it was a prayertest. Also, I would guess there are more Catholics than Mormons in Santa Clarita. When I go to OLPH at 7am on Sunday it's pretty sparse, but the later masses and Spanish masses are often pretty crowded.

I remember several years back residents of Stevenson Ranch complaining about the number of non-residents coming into their neighborhood to trick or treat. Personally, I am a fan of the area behind Granary Square. It is easier to walk -- no hills! :-)
