December 19 2013 – Daily Brief

  • LASD investigators have recovered three data recording devices from the wrecked Porsche Walker & Rodas were in when they died last month. THe LASD will have to wait until the new year to recover data from the devices -apparently they can only be acessed by being plugged into another ultra-rare and expensive Porsche GT- but Porsche is paying for it and will be flying engineers out to assist. Investigators still say they can't determine what happened exactly. NY DAILY NEWS, KHTS
  • On the other hand, another anonymous report from "investigators" says there was no mechanical failures on the Porsche and that speed alone caused the crash. AP
  • Uhhh: Target has lost suffered a breach of their security system and thinks some 40 million of our credit & debit cards could be in the hands of malefactors. What an epic fail. The breach apparently only grabbed card numbers used in stores between November 27 & December 15, pretty much the busiest time of the year for retail. TIMES
  • Incredible: SCV home values keep going up, even in the normally slow winter months: in November, SFR were up $4k in median home value while condo owners enjoyed a $15k increase. Also: investors have slowed their purchases of homes; more conventional buyers are purchasing now. Which is good for the SCV SIGNAL
  • An SCV resident and LASD Lieutenant is being investigated by the FBI as part of the civil rights violation probe on the Department. SIGNAL
  • New CFO at the Hart District. She's got SCV-cred too. SIGNAL
  • Creepy: Staff participated in a live simulation of an active shooter scenario yesterday. They even had to "shelter in place. KHTS: "Staff then started receiving text messages that two shooters was on campus. The shooters entered the building not long after, but using what they had learned, several staff members were able to successfully subdue both assailants."
  • LTE calls out hypocritical City Council for "admonishing" residents to shop local while only authorizing about 1/3rd of contracts for local businesses, meaning "nearly two-thirds go to outside vendors."  LTE

Today's Which Way LA had an interview about the Target thing -- much less hysterical than what is otherwise presented.

Interview was on Air Talk, not Which Way LA. http://www.scpr.org/programs/airtalk/2013/
