  • Alarming, or Alarmist?: "In the last month, three people have been victims of homicide locally, driving up the murder rate to match numbers in East Los Angeles and exceeding the numbers in South Los Angeles, statistics show." Jim Holt and Lila Littlejohn penned a piece examining recent killings in the SCV and the link to domestic violence. It should surprise no one that awful things happen in our community, and the bad news deserves more coverage. But using stats to equate the SCV with South L.A.? And notably, egregiously absent from the story is the input of anyone in any sort of law enforcement capacity. A start, but not nearly the complete story for which the topic calls. The Signal
  • Supes Have a Fire to Put Out: "One of the candidates is the son of a fire captain, was selected for the department’s firefighter training academy and was later hired as a firefighter in 2013." The county Board of Supervisors is looking for answers and action after and audit revealed more than a dozen fire employees circulated test questions and answers in recent years, giving candidates an unfair advantage.   • Two Dead, Two Injured in Crashes: Two men were killed, and two people were injured in three separate crashes over the weekend. The Signal
  • Six People Inexplicably Protest in SCV: An estimated 200 people showed up in the rain yesterday to stage a counter-protest against six Westboro Baptist Church members who visited SCV and made the rounds to protest at five local churches. The Signal KHTS
  • SCV and the Oscars: During last night's Academy Awards, gold statues were handed out for a film shot largely here in SClarita, and a CalArts alum. SCVNews
  • Port Struggle Hits Home: The recent union shutdown in the Port of L.A. had effects that reached the SCV. AMS Fulfillment (until recently, the company handled fulfillment for TOMS shoes) had one client with 60 containers sitting offshore. The Signal
