County Slow to Act on Measles Exposure in Valencia

Image not recoveredMeasles-SCV.jpg
Last week, a Santa Clarita a preschool-aged child was diagnosed with measles and may have exposed others to the disease prior to being diagnosed, according to two families who were warned about possible exposure.
The parents, who asked not to be named, say the possible exposure occurred at a medical/office building on 28212 Kelly Johnson Parkway, in the Valencia Industrial Center.
Both parents complain that the County has been slow to act and, as of yesterday, there hasn’t been a widespread effort to notify people who may have been exposed to the highly-contagious disease. The infected child was in the building between 8:30am and 11:30am on Tuesday, February 24. Since the measles virus can live for two hours on its own, the possible exposure window is between 8:30am and 1:30pm.
Perry Smith from KHTS has more on this story, including a statement from the County that expands the possible exposure period to February 25. The county’s own list of possible exposures doesn’t yet reflect this exposure, but interestingly, its lone entry comes from the SCV 19 days ago.
Beyond those who are intentionally unvaccinated, measles poses a special risk to children who are too young to be fully vaccinated and those with compromised immune systems. Additionally, the MMR vaccine can lose its effectiveness over time with some, leaving them (unknowingly) at risk.
The building on Kelly Johnson Parkway is a large multi-use office building that’s home to medical and dental offices, special needs service providers, legal offices, and other businesses.
It’s situated next to Northpark Community Church, which hosts two of the least-vaccinated schools in SCV. Their Noah’s Park Preschool reports a personal beliefs exemption rate of 13% which is the third highest in the SCV, and the current Kindergarten class at its Trinity Private Academy reported a personal beliefs exemption rate of 10%, the third highest of SCV Kindergartens. Both levels are considered by public health experts to be high enough to compromise herd immunity. Albert Einstein Academy 7-12 across the street has historically reported very high levels of vaccination.

I want to thank you and Perry for finally finding information and shining a light on this. It's very important the public knows where they may have been exposed. For those of us who are immune compromised this is truly a matter of life and death and your work is now saving lives. Again, thank you.

Thanks for reporting this and spreading the word. Same to you, Perry. Yikes.

Let me get this straight. The parents, who didn't vaccinate their child, are complaining that the County has been slow to respond?

The older son had his first MMR the younger sibling is too young to receive the shot at the time of exposure, before you start to assume,

Both parents I spoke to had vaccinated their children, but one has an infant too young for the MMR vaccination.

Interesting... I was at Henry Mayo ER on Wednesday night and specifically asked about any cases. I was told on Wednesday that there were no reported cases in the Valley. Granted it was only one day, but it does sound as though communication could be improved. It has been a week and this is the first most of us have heard about this. I followed up with my doctor on Thursday who is also associated with HMNMH and he also told me there is no reported cases. I get the fear of panic and hysteria. I also believe we have seen how lack of openness creates more issues for families and panic.

Here's the link: http://www.cnbc.com/id/102473744 Washington, D.C., March 3, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Physicians and public health officials know that recently vaccinated individuals can spread disease and that contact with the immunocompromised can be especially dangerous. For example, the Johns Hopkins Patient Guide warns the immunocompromised to "Avoid contact with children who are recently vaccinated," and to "Tell friends and family who are sick, or have recently had a live vaccine (such as chicken pox, measles, rubella, intranasal influenza, polio or smallpox) not to visit."1 A statement on the website of St. Jude's Hospital warns parents not to allow people to visit children undergoing cancer treatment if they have received oral polio or smallpox vaccines within four weeks, have received the nasal flu vaccine within one week, or have rashes after receiving the chickenpox vaccine or MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.2

Yeah man, that's not CNBC. That's a press release. From a crackpot org.

CNBC merely reported the same news story thousands of others did. The facts contained therein are from JOHNS HOPKINS and ST JUDES HOSPITAL, which are far from crackpot. It's important to review all the facts and make your own independent vaccine choice. I have no problem with anyone taking as many vaccines as they desire, provided they are given full disclosure in advance. I do not want anyone telling me I have to inject toxic poisons into my body. Remember, until the 1950's, doctors were taught in medical school to prescribe cigarettes. In the 1920's, they prescribed Heroin and cocaine, as taught in medical school. Just saying we need to be open to new independent evidence and avoid being blinded by cigarette science - it took 40 years of legal battles to overcome cigarette science to get warnings on cig packs. Seems pretty archaic, knowing what we know now. There are whistle blowers telling how the industry has HIDDEN the vaccine-autism association. Google: 'Italy Vaccine documents' and you will find a manufacturer's vaccine trial documents that clearly state at least 5 kids in the study developed autism due to the vaccine. They were found guilty in Italy, but Americans are not allowed to sue them.
