- Hospital issue delayed for revised EIR:Henry Mayo Hospital has no idea when a revised EIR detailing the effects of an underground parking structure might be available for the city to review, and as a result, a vote or further deliberation on the controversial expansion plan will be delayed until spring. That’s around the same time that TimBen Boydston, the plan’s number one critic, will vacate his seat on the City Council. There’s no quote from a Mayo Hospital spokesperson regarding the delay, though the City’s Planning Manager Lisa Hardy told the Signal that changes requested by the city council require the hospital to revise its previous EIRs. News of the delay comes on a Thursday, just one day before the city usually releases its Council Agenda ahead of the January 8, 2008 council meeting where the controversial issue was to be discussed again. - Home sales continue slide in November: Only 111 homes were sold in the Santa Clarita Valley during the month of November, marking a 39% decrease over the same period a year prior. Median prices of $522,500 for a single family home in the SCV were off 9.9% over November 2006 prices. As for condos, November’s 38 sales marked the “lowest condo sales total on record” edging out October 2007. Signal has a good report, but it’s not online, so here’s a Daily News report.
- Waste Management jacks up fee for non-city residents: Residents of West Ranch, Stevenson Ranch and Castaic saw their garbage collection fees go up in December following a fuel surcharge meant to offset higher fuel prices, according to the Signal. City residents are unaffected by the increase since Santa Clarita has a contract with Waste Management. Parimal Rohit has the story.
- Newhall Ranch from Ventura County’s Perspective:Our neighbors in Ventura county have long opposed the massive Newhall Ranch project which would be built near the LA/Ventura County Line, and the Star has a brief article summarizing the project and Ventura’s efforts to mitigate it ahead of next week’s final vote. - Newhall developer, Historical Society member dies: Ted Lamkin built the Peachland tract in Newhall’s Happy Valley and helped establish Peachland Elementary School (Signal says Placerita Elementary, but no such school exists to my knowledge). He was also a member of the SCV Historical Society and an all-round “gregarious” and”modest” guy. Lamkin was 90 years old. Obit
- 14 year old boy killed on 5 Freeway: He was trying to flag down motorists for help when he was hit by the driver of a truck who allegedly fled the scene. Karen Elowitt has more.
