are you kidding me? there is a thinksantaclarita.com AND a thinksantaclaritavalley.com? Both busses can be faulted for poor presentation of a url. The Think SCV bus might lead one to got to “santaclaritavalley.com” while the Think SC bus, if taken on its face, directs one to “clarita.com”.

•Another $21 billion deficit for the State of California. And our city seems to think it will not be impacted? It is long past time to stop handing out taxpayer dollars to business. The city 21 point recovery plan needs to recognized the states 21,000,000,000.00 recovery plan. The council is going to wish they held on to the 200k they plan to give to the scvbda along with the other hand outs to business. More business will close and this is a sad but necessary evil that results from the bloated lifestyle we can no longer afford. Taxes are going up and the unnecessary services we have grown to expect will be cut. Even Timmy can do the math.

The bus wrap is a waste of money. Have we seen any signs that the 21 point plan (as a stand alone action) has been helpful? Has it created one job? So far all it seems to have done is hand taxpayer money over to business in one form or another. People that ride the bus don’t generally own the kind of business the area needs. The city needs to save our money.

Petz says the fix is in for Hasley and Romero Canyons at the board meeting . After tonight the Castaic Town Council will have to gather signatures in support of Hasley Canyon to counter the small but politically influential individuals who value their rural lifestyle and have the ear of Mike A. Jensen/Messina should sit on their hands and not further delay this process. This is Jaime Castellanos chance to lead.

I am going to assume that the 8-year-old did not write that letter—at least not the majority of it. Here are writing samples from purportedly average second-graders: http://www.cyberspaces.net/6traits/anchora.html As you can see, they struggle with sentence formation. Drafting paragraphs and using phrases like “wake up, America” are better explained by the letter being written by a parent. This would explain why the persona of a kid depicted in the letter is such a curious one. She is at once war-weary (“I am sick and tired of all these wars, all the fighting.”), idealistic (“…and I am the future you are fighting for”), fluent in insurance lingo (“Health care is way too expensive! I mean $600 a month, plus $50 co-pay plus $10,000 deductible. You have got to be kidding me!”), yet charmingly child-like when it will evoke the most sympathy (“Once I had three splinters in my hand. […] It was really deep and hurt really bad.”) In a word, UGH is what I think of the letter.

SCVMom: 20,000 sounds about right. In 2000 just under 6% of the population of LA county was Jewish. Extrapolating that to the SCV would translate into 15,000. It is not hard to imagine that the SCV could work its way to 8% since a higher proportion of that 6% is concentrated in the San Fernando Valley and West Side and we know that a substantial amount of the inmigration into the SCV was from the SFV.

IMO, Judaism (or to be Jewish) is a faith, not an ethnicity. However, many Jews feel that to be born into a Jewish Family makes one Jewish. My spouse does not practice any religion, yet is considered Jewish. It’s always been a debate between us. Any SCVtalkers who were born within a ‘Jewish’ family, yet does not observe faith Judaism faith, have an answer?

lvogel and Cash: That publication would include in their count people of Jewish ethnicity. The number of actual observant Jews would be much lower, just like how the 70 to 80% of Americans that self identify themselves as “Christian” does not even remotely approach regular church attendance. Now an observant Jew would include in the Jewish population ANY person who carried the appropriate genetic markers generated by folks living in Palestine between 800 BCE and 70 CE. The fact they are non-observant just means they are non-observant. An interesting aside. One of the Pharisee “slanders” against Jesus was that he was probably not Jewish because he came from Gallillee which at that time was equal parts Jew, Greek, Samaritans and probably Arabs, so the Pharisees definitely thought the genes met everything. A active Christian would not necessarily grab up and include folks not active in a church but who self identify themselves as Chritians. But this is all moot because everyone knows that God’s favorite religion is Lutheran (hee hee).

That would be me, my parents quit practicing when they got married 60 years ago. To be Jewish is to be part of an ethnic tribe, either Askenazic or Sephardic Jew, regardless of your religious practice. This is the history and the legacy of what it means to be Jewish, yet be an aetheist, Buddhist, Christian, Baptist, etc.
