Hate Crimes and the SCV

Regarding the Signal’s Hate Crime story this morning, I find it encouraging that though hate crimes increased 11 percent last year, the total amount of hate crimes in the SCV is only 30. Considering all the crimes that occur here in town (check out CrimeReports.com for a sampling), 30 is a pretty low number for an entire year.

On the other hand, if you’re one of the 30 victims of a hate crime, the SCV probably seems like a pretty hostile place. Check out these examples from the County’s report:

May 17 – Newhall

Three young Latinas were walking in an apartment complex when two older white teenage girls pulled up in a car and shouted, “Fucking beaners!” They jumped out of the vehicle and hit the victims with a flashlight and kicked them forcefully.

Distressingly, as the Signal noted, hate crimes targeted against gays in the SCV also increased last year, possibly due to the intense public & local debate over Proposition 8. Sadly almost one-third of the hate crimes in 2008 were committed against gay Santa Claritans, or those perceived as gays as in this example in the report:

June 22 – Santa Clarita

Two white brothers were walking into a convenience store when two men (one white, one latino) seated in a parked car yelled, “Hey queer!” When they exited the store, the men in the car again shouted, “Hey queers! We’re talking to you!” One of the suspects exited the vehicle and attacked one  of the victims. When the second victim tried to break up the fight, the other suspect attacked him.

Not all the hate crimes in the SCV are of the violent variety, however. Every few months it seems we read of vandalism incidents against gays, Jews, blacks or Mexicans.

    I’m glad that I’m white because no crime has ever, or will ever happen to me due to that fact. Phew!

    And you read nothing about white on white crimes? Black on Black? Mexican on Mexican or any other mix one could focus on? What’s the point?

    The intense public debate over proposition 8 has led to the increase in hate crimes on gays?????? Give me a break. I doubt that any of the sickos who attack a person because of being gay had any interest in the prop 8 debate. Another smear to portray those who want to retain traditional marriage as haters.

    Crime against any group should not be tolerated. We only have to look at history to illustrate this. The Nazi regime was only allowed to grow and spread its evil reign of terror because good decent people failed to act to put an end to the Nazi’s intolerant and criminal behavior. We can disagree without being disagreeable. We can solve problems without slaughtering people because they have different beliefs or are otherwise different than we are. Civilized people understand this.

    Money has run out of debate material. He has lost the ability to think on his own. So he pulls quotes from the net. Crimes are perpetrated on all walks of life. No one group deserves more attention than the other. But if Jeff wants to make a political statement by linking to the Signal article, that’s fine. Bringing the Nazis into the discussion may be a bit over the top. Last I checked Jewish people are doing fine. One does not need to look to far to see certain races killing their own, today not 70 years ago.

Hmmmm That’s like saying that a KKK member who attacked their fair share of Blacks, didn’t care about the outcome of the civil rights movement in the 60′s.

If you think the mass of hate crimes aren’t committed against non whites, the you are FAR more ignorant and have your head further down the rabbit hole than I ever imagined. This is an issue close to my heart. I highly doubt you would have the balls to say the things you have said here in public.

    I remember that case, GangFang. The brothers were mistaken for a GAY couple. Since our Gay and Lesbian citizens have been trying to get the same rights the rest of ‘married’ society gets, HATE crimes have increased. Very similiar to the civil rights cause in the 50′s and 60′s. There were more attacks on our Black citizens during that period and the HATRED was seen by many thanks in part to our media. It’s important that these crimes are reported not only to our law enforcement, but to the public. Our young people need to know that this is not acceptable and should not be swept under the rug or accepted as just another crime.

    lvogel – how a sicko who attacks gays individually votes on prop 8 is not relevant to the issue. What I am saying is that those that commit hate crimes are likely also very ignorant and also likely to not vote at all. My main point is that blaming the prop 8 movement on the increase in hate crime is absolutely wrong. Perhaps a class in Logic 101 would be useful to you.

    Took it already Jim! You feel that those that commit hate crimes “didn’t have any interest” in prop 8…your words. They had a very big interest in prop 8. They hate gays. They don’t want gays to marry (or even BE)! The turn out for this past election was large and MANY citizens voted, yes even those so called IGNORANT ones. I remember watching the marches during the early 60′s and seeing all those faces with HATRED, using their first admendment rights to shout their thoughts and disgust about equal rights for Black citizens. They yelled vile euphemism’s to get their points across, and they were in the mass’s! I saw the same thing happening with Proposition 8. Perhaps not on the same calibur or with the amount of violence that occured 4 decades ago, but it was there.

    lvogel: Your argument seems to be: The ignorant people who commit hate crimes voted for Prop 8, therefore all those who voted for Prop 8 are ignorant and hateful. This is false logic. I ran it by Spock and he agrees.

    Never eluded to that Jim Farley. I have several neighbors who posted ‘Yes on 8′ signs in their front yard. I know of several ‘acquaintances’ that voted yes on 8. Do I feel they are ‘hateful’, NO. Do I feel they are ignorant, NO. Do I feel that hateful people vote, YES. Do I feel ignorant people vote, YES. Those nuts (and their young children) that stood with signs indicating that “GOD HATES FAGS”, voted and encouraged others to do the same. I feel that there is nothing wrong (and it effects me in NO WAY) allowing same gender adults the right to marry and truly be equal in society and in the workforce (ie, employee benefits). It’s not a black or white, right or wrong choice for me. The ‘false’ logic you mention does not apply to me. On the contrary, my principles are genuine.

    I am starting to feel hatred. Please help me. Too many on this board are referring to me as an old man. Old people deserve better treatment. Older people are discriminated against every day. Probably more than any other group of people. Ah, but another hate crime. I will start my emotional recovery with an apology from Gang Fang. Until GF complies, I will rely on what my mother taught me as a young child. She said,”Sticks and stone may break my bones but names will never hurt me”. So please remove all the name calling and only report the sticks and stone cases. Much of the rest is whining and a desperate move to push an agenda. GangFang Are you threatening me? You hater you! I hope you find a way to make your life better. I do not considered disagreement as “pot stirring”. Jeff posted the link, not me.
