Welcome to the Social SCVTalk?

It’s come to my attention that a certain popular social networking website wants to integrate its technology with independent websites like this one.

The benefits for you, the user of that social networking site, include having the ability to easily “Like” something here (don’t you like everything on here anyway?) and automatically post it to your profile. I would not see what you like (or even know who you are), unless I was friends with you before hand.

UPDATE: To address a comment, I don’t think other Facebook users on this site would see what you “Like” unless they were friends with you.

The benefits for me, as webmaster, would mean -possibly- more readers of SCVTalk as you and your social network view, comment and/or trash the posts here.

The benefit for that massively powerful social network site is that they will soon have inroads into SCVTalk’s literate, highly educated, and witty audience, and they’ll be able to display ads and products tailored to your digital profile (food, bicycles, BBQ for those of us in Newhall and Valencia, sleeping pills for Stevenson Ranch, and mudflaps and rifle racks for Canyon Country readers.)

The drawbacks?

I can’t think of anything. Except it’s all kinds of creepy how powerful the social networking site is becoming. And I don’t like how it’s “opt-out” instead of “opt-in.” That’s why I’m asking for your input first.

So what say you? Would you like the ginormous social networking website to connect to SCVTalk?

I “opted out” of that feature on facebook because I really didn’t know what all the implications would be. Sometimes this ever changing techno-wizardry just makes my head hurt. I don’t want to sacrifice my anonymity on this board, although I’m not opposed to putting a “like” icon on my facebook page for this website.

Well, if you integrated with FB, would you have to have an account with them to ready your blog? Also, many companies block access to FB so I’m gonna go with No. Besides, I hate change!

Facebook was so 5 years ago–it’s just going to take everyone a little while to realize it. Thus, tethering yourself to FB would be no good.

I sure don’t have the time for all this social networking nonsense and I really don’t care that you just went to the head or some other trivial crap. Just another reason why America is going the way of Rome. Misplaced priorities!

I would say No! I like it just the way we are too! Not always happy with the opinions here but they are local opinions

Actually it looks like despite your privacy settings about your ‘likes’ and ‘recommendations’ these would be public. “Remember that, even if you change your settings for what is shared or shown on Facebook, likes and recommendations made on other sites become publicly available information, similar to a public comment on a website. Only click the Like or Recommend buttons if you want to share your likes and recommendations publicly.” Focus on the “similar to a public comment on a website”. I’m assuming that means that i could comment on your blog and that would show up on facebook as well. Personally while I’m in on the whole social networking thing with Twitter and Facebook i just can’t see myself using it. I try to keep politics out of my personal and online babbles. I this blog much because I’m not interested in getting into some online argument with someone. The concept of extending Facebook Connect is interesting and i can see it working on a place like Digg, but for me personally it’s not something I’d want to do on this blog. I promote your blog by telling people i voted in the this past local election (first time!) because of scvtalk.com. Woo-hoo for word of mouth.

It would be nice to see some sort of login and user agreement. I am not thrilled about giving to much information. As I have already been stalked by 2 different people from this site who lacked the maturity to respect a different opinion.

Nate, you flatter yourself. You do not represent a different opinion most of the time, you simply hurl insults at the wall to see what sticks and some of us have called you on it. When you keep it to the issues without making very offensive statements as you have towards me, I enjoy a good debate. No one needs to stalk you as you give your multiple pseudonyms away yourself by spewing the same vitriol and vulgar language. You are the immature one. Let us see what you are like when you grow up….

I’m curious if it’s your ummm…more mature readers who are so against Facebook. Our older population just seems so afraid of any kind of change.
