  • City Council unanimously approves new Newhall library design that “incorporates more architectural elements with a more Western flavor than the original design,” says the Signal. Also, dozens of residents of the McBean/Singing Hills area showed up to protest the proposed medical office building there. That matter will go before the Planning Commission in June SIGNAL, KHTS
  • No rest for the weary; California’s budget projections are looking as bad as some thought they would- $20 billion in the hole SAC BEE
  • 70 teachers are being laid off at local elementary school districts due to the budget cuts, though the schools say they will hire them back if the fiscal picture changes SIGNAL
  • Ralph’s Grocery store is being charged with false advertising and false labeling after LA County Weights and Measures staff went undercover and found the grocer overcharging for weighed items. Money quote: “It might just be 95 cents, but if you add that up over the number of stores they have times the number of times they sell that item times 365 days a days a year, this becomes a huge ripoff.” Bring back Hughes!   • 19 year old Cal Arts student Andy Gohlich visits Newhall Ranch area, photographs it, then creates four postcards with text from Newhall Ranch EIR. “The land out there is beautiful, I don’t want to see it encroached on,” he said. SCOPE likes what he did; Newhall Land drops hints that it could prosecute Gohlich and says much of  the land in the photographs will be open space anyway SIGNAL
  • Uh-Oh: Santa Clarita’s enterprise zone will soon have to compete with the San Fernando Valley, which just got approved for an Enterprise Zone of its own LA TIMES

    Will the new library in Santa Clarita be as pretty as the library in Stevenson Ranch? Will the wi-fi at the Santa Clarita skate park be as fast as the wi-fi at the Stevenson Ranch skate park? Will the 4th of July parade in Santa Clarita be as grand as the 4th of July parade in downtown Stevenson Ranch? Oh, wait. Stevenson Ranch doesn’t have a library. Stevenson Ranch doesn’t have a skate park. Stevenson Ranch doesn’t have a downtown. Stevenson Ranch doesn’t have a 4th of July parade. But Stevenson Ranch does have a very high mello-roos tax that doubles their property tax bills. Wow, Stevenson Ranch sure is lucky to have LA County taking watching out for them!

    Buy a sack of oranges at the Mentryville Famers’ Market Too hot? How about catching a show at the Stevenson Ranch Performing Arts Center.

    Re Mojave Cross flip-flap: Jeff, you’re being dissed over there on the Tea Party site for your liberal perspective on the ideal of innocence until proven guilty. What’s wrong with you? I mean, it’s obvious based on hearsay and conjecture, and the fact that the Tea Party says so, that liberals stole the cross. No need for due process or any of those other constitutional nuances that suit some of us only when it works to our advantage. Shame on you, sir! Of COURSE it was the liberals!!! Darn you…darn you all to heck, sir!

    It is regrettable that the Fourth of July Committee decided to hold the parade on Sunday morning when many members of the community will be in worship. Why could they have not held the parade on Saturday instead?

    Petz, Every few years the FOJ Committee runs into this problem. We held the Parade on Sunday once and got lambasted by several churches. We shifted to Saturday once and got lambasted by many business owners who claimed that people could not get to their businesses even tho there were so many sitting outside their doors. It’s a no-win situation for us. We have already heard from many places of worship this year that they are going to change their service times, or days, so that their parishoners can also enjoy the holiday.

    Navigator: Remember when it was held on a Saturday and some temples in town said it was an anti-semitic plot? I still love the hostile Moms when you tell them the kids can’s shoot their silly string. “Why do they sell it if you can’t shoot it?” I finally came up with a retort: “Wal-Mart is the biggest seller of gun ammunition but they prohibit firing weapons in their stores!”

    RE Mojave Cross ala Mayor Bloomberg It was most likely a left wing radical disenchanted that the president’s health care plan did not provide for a single payer system.
