Jeff is taking a well-deserved hiatus from the Daily Brief, which gives us a chance to try something new.

  • Zapruder-style video released from the scene of the July 4th tragedy CBS2 (mike)
  • Sheriff’s detectives use laser measuring devices in deadly July 4 accident investigation. SIGNAL   This suggests that investigators want to determine the speed of the cars involved.  Lead detective reiterates that video evidence shows that the Infiniti “clearly” ran a red light.  The investigative team plans to send results of investigation to DA next week.   • Details are spotty, but a Deputy Sheriff shot and wounded someone early this morning during a response to a domestic disturbance call LATIMES (John B.)
  • City Attorney Carl Newton will resign effective Jan 1 2011 COUNCIL AGENDA (Jeff)
  • LTE states that 4th of July parade sucked and notes the now 31 year absence of marching bands despite the doubling of high schools since the last confirmed use of bands in 1979.  Meanwhile, the Huntington Beach parade boasts five times more entries (300) and included at least two marching bands (Huntington Beach High School and the St. Cloud (MN) All City Band.)     Reports on the condition of the boy who was critically injured in the July 4 accident said he was improving but last night I heard someone mention that he had died. Any news?

    The weather is better for marching bands in Huntington Beach. Maybe if Santa Clarita would have its parade in the evening when it’s cooler . . .

    The Parade Committee does start the parade now at 9:00 am rather than 10:00 am for heat related issues. The Huntington Beach parade also has MUCH higher entry fees which probably provides more resources to spread funds to schools that participate so that the parade is a mini-fundraiser. In the case of Huntington Beach, the local HS band appeared in “informal” uniforms (Red T-shirts and khaki shorts) while the St. Cloud band appeared in their full formal gear. Informal uniforms would solve part of the heat issue. Staging the parade in the evening would be extremely tricky since NO ONE knows in advance how long it will really take and we could get involved in darkness or dusk situations which would be an extreme safety hazards. The letter writer also complained about gaps but that is going to occur because the different types of entries cannot make an identical speed.

    The HB Parade is also advertised in the media and includes various radio and tv personalities. Who knows, maybe their marching bands have more (pardon the local pun) PRIDE than ours. At any rate we, the committee, have offered bribes, payolla and whatever we could to get our high school marching bands into the parade again but everyone is too busy vacationing or some such nonsense. Mr Gately must need new glasses anyway since it seems he missed all the equestrians in this year’s parade. Perhaps next year he’ll grab a shovel and come out to help.

    Not much in that video since one just heard the sound and then saw the Infiniti come to rest on the sidewalk. Obviously happened very quickly.

    One of the “benefits” of small town parades is that they are cheesy … borderline silly … sometimes inappropriate (whatever your particular brand might be). I enjoy our parade. I applaud our parade. I endorse our parade. Everything tastes better with cheese.

    I agree Scott. Embrace the cheese and the fact that any marginally intelligent high school band member is going to bail on a 110 degree parade performance if given half a chance! I am also sure the HB parade is heavily corporatized with lots of high dollar sponsorship and probably a paid staff to spend the year organizing it.

    I went out and saw the parade with my family for the very first time this year. I loved it. It was everything I hoped it would be. Kids on bikes, flags, firetrucks. I’ll be there next year for sure.
