- This is kind of a cool story: An amateur backyard astronomer from Santa Clarita named R.E. Jones discovered a 2 mile wide planet in 2004. After years of watching the planet, MIT scientists have confirmed Jones’ discovery and offered him the chance to name the object. Jones chose to name it Elie Wiesel after the 1986 Nobel prizer winner and Holocaust survivor. BOSTON UNIVERSITY Check out Jones’ observatory page, he apparently lives in North Valencia.
