  • Driver, fleeing from police, slams into gas station at Sierra Highway and Newhall, starts fire and causes awning to crash down. The driver and his passenger suffered serious injuries but were saved.  ABC 7
  • A Canyon Country couple in their late 50s has been missing for nearly a week but authorities don’t think there was any foul play involved KHTS
  • Buck McKeon named “Porker of the Month” by taxpayer advocacy group over our Congressman’s pushing of defense earmarks -despite the earmark ban!- totaling $600 million. A McKeon spokesperson defends the Congressman and says it’s “a matter of interpretation .” Really, you’re trying the “That’s not fair, it’s much more nuanced than that” defense against the Tea Party? PAPER
  • Dems pass budget, only to see Governor Jerry Brown veto it less than a day later. SIGNAL Our own Cameron Smyth appeared on Warren Olney’s Which Way LA? program to discuss WHICH WAY LA
  • The Coalition for Suburban communities group that’s coordinated by Scott Wilk has a new petition up asking residents to urge the redistricting commission to put Newhall back in with Buck McKeon’s district. COALITION, SIGNAL, SCOTT WILK COLUMN
  • Underlining that UCLA study about the shift from the suburbs to metro areas, a CBS 2 report today talks to a construction company worker whose firm used to “almost exclusively” build homes in Santa Clarita but now has shifted to building multi-family dwellings in city areas CBS 2
  • SCV school districts will rehire at least 25 teachers they laid off in May according to the SIGNAL
  • Maybe we don’t need libraries after all: This weekend, the SCV libraries will officially close and Santa Clarita won’t have any public library service at all for nearly two weeks (save for Castaic and Agua Dulce).  In two weeks, the City of Santa Clarita will take over. So what are book lovers to do in the meantime? Set up their own book exchange by sitting outside the Valencia library SIGNAL

  • Our old friend Berta Gonzalez Barbier now blogs for the folks at RIGHT ON SCV and she’s got a post saying that the (unspecified) complainers in our valley lack ethics. RIGHT ON SCV
  • Meanwhile, Cam Noltemeyer opens fire on the recently approved One Valley, One Vision general plan over at WRB
  • And Roger Gitlin, who doesn’t even live in the SCV anymore, exposes Obama’s master plan to drive the cost of housing down so low that illegal aliens will be able to buy your home. No seriously he really believes that “There is a strong likelihood the buyer of your modest home in a quiet suburban neighborhood might very well be an illegal alien and extended family.” WRB
  • The Senses event on Main Street last night was fantastic. Hundreds of people of all ages just hung out on Main Street, danced, laughed, drank, ate food and socialized. Businesses like the Rep, the Theater Guild, Roger’s Newhall Bike shop and the new wine place all kept their doors open past 10pm. Growing up here, we never had such events in the SCV, and I find myself a bit envious of the early 20 something crowd who were clearly having a great time. I had more fun than I usually do at a Concert in the Park. Next month’s theme is a “Beach Party” so be sure to stop by.

    Gas station awning falls and backs up traffic on Newhall Ave and Sierra Highway for hours. KHTS has story, ABC has story, NBC has story, nothing on our local newspaper’s web site except a giant car ad.

    Saw this on the way to work at 5:30 this am, ahead of the traffic. Apparently a fire started that was extinguished pretty quickly. It would have been much more tragic had a significant fire occured.

    We should get some faux libertarian tea party type person to start going to City Council meetings pitching for the elimination of libraries completely since citizens can just set up folding tables and trade Twilight books 24/7. Think of the savings!

    On Roger Gitlin: I really must recommend that folks NOT read Roger Gitlin because I truly think one’s soul is in jeopardy. As a Jew, he should know more than most the historic dangers of racially based propaganda and opinion.

    This is America, Mr. Myers, and Roger Gitlin is entitled to his opinion…Even if he’s associating a housing bill that was passed in 2008 as an Obama policy . This is how it works, see: Anything that went wrong in the past 10 years is Obama’s fault, and anything good that happened since January 2009 can be attributed to either George W. Bush or Ronald Reagan. Get it together, Tim!!

    On Roberta Gonzalez BARBIER? 1. What is with the new last name? 2. The post is much shorter than some of her comments on this forum. 3. “Cash” comments (I was worried about him) and she thinks he is Petz.

    There’s an odd way the comments post there. She was actually responding to Petz’s facebook reply. Her reply was up there before cash’s.

    Berta is just being Berta. If you do not agree with her, you are disrespecting her. She has clearly been in a minority, of one, at both the CCAC and CAG so everyone else has a personal agenda. I do not know why those groups even put up with her. What will happen? In a short time that blog will figure her out also and she will off to find new people to tell her old delusional stories too.

    Huge explosive bang last night (actually around 3:30am this morning) around Meadows Park/School. Firetrucks, power outage, etc… anyone know what happened?

    When the power outage comes, combined with explosion, sounds like a transformer exploded. Not likely overloaded, so some poor animal crossed the wires at the wrong time it sounds like….

    Bravo, Susan Huffman. What an amazing lady! She took this negative situation and made a positive statement to all in the SCV. Instead of complaining about the closure of the Canyon Country Library due to construction problems, she is sharing her gently used books with others and hoping they will do the same. It is the perfect solution to get books into kids hands until the problem is solved. And even better what a great message she is giving to her children -”When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!” In today’s political climate of constant complaining and no action we need more Susan Huffmans. Ever think about running for State office, Susan? You could certainly teach Sacramento a thing or two. Again, thank you for being part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

    So Bucky can give pork to the defense contractors but can’t sponsor or put his name on a bill with Boxer to get a CEMEX bill passed (because he says it is an earmark)? Buck has been so worthless to the SCV – other than getting money for roads on the westside of town to benefit NLF.
