Castaic

It may not be the most cohesive community in town and the primary industry may be the service (in all ways that they can be) of truckers, but castaic has one thing the rest of the scv lacks, this:

hello from castaic lagoon, where families are enjoying a cool summer day, a man with a guitar is singing away in espanol, and I am taking a rest after a 15 mile ride.

    Be careful about going in that water. An Animal Planet documentary revealed there is a man-eating (well, bikini-clad girl eating) octopus in the lake.     Castaic Lake is an underutilized gem of the valley. Those running it (a combination of LA County parks and the state, over the years) need to see the opportunities for outsourced food and drink, overnight camping, more public programs, more concerts, and general publicity to the valley. I know some who are working there and they are doing great work. But there is SO much potential that is untapped. It will take some funding, but if done creatively and by partnering with the private sector (another public employee union problem there…), amazing things can be done. I hope Mike A. wakes up and pushes this before he retires. Nothing like a cool breeze off the lake is summer, the smell of hot dogs and smores, and the knowledge that the town is only a mile away, and home is at most ten. This is our Central Park in Castaic, and it should be taken advantage of and utilized so much more!

    Very few homes have a lone-of-sight to the areas that would be involved, and there are multiple entrances into the park, so traffic wouldn’t be a problem, either.

    Last time I was there people were using it as a bathtub/toilet. I decided to build a pool so I’d never have to go back.

    Yep, they close it several times a year because too many people are using the lake as a toilet and bacteria levels get too high. It’s nice to look at, but i’ll take a pass on swimming in it.

    So it is okay that it is drinking water, but not healthy to swim in?

    I think the drinking water comes from the upper lake.

    I have a feeling that the water is treated extensively before being used as drinking water.

    The lowest lagoon gets bad, due to the number of people, the shallow, warm water, and the wind that blows all surface debris right to the area. Swim further upstream and it is clean.

    I used to ski on the lake, but it got too crowded and it was always windy. When I was a kid, I planted trees in the lower part. I wonder what they look like now.
