  • Speaking of GOP clubs- yes there is a new one. David Gauny’s insurgents took over the SCV Republican Assembly so now Lynn Hauter and other “in” Republicans have started the Greater SCV Republican Assembly. This is the second club to form in the wake of Gauny’s victory SCV NEWS
  • There were five power outages across the SCV this weekend as temps hit 110+ on both Saturday and Sunday KHTS, SIGNAL
  • And temps will remain high today and most of this week SIGNAL
  • The City has ordered the Newhall homeowner who built a giant tennis complex in his backyard to lower the fence surrounding his property by September 21 SIGNAL
  • Sheriff’s Department bomb squad officials were called out to the south end of Valley Street Saturday to investigate and later destroy what appeared to be a dry ice bomb in a plastic container. Deputies shot two pellets at the container and blew it up. SCVNEWS
  • LA County Vector Control and all those abandoned houses with pools SIGNAL
  • Senator Barbara Boxer will be at the Transit Maintenance Facility to dedicate SCT’s new solar canopy project. The solar canopies will generate enough electricity to power 97% of the transit facility CITY BRIEFS

    Jeff should not take succor in the current kerfluffle between conservative and GOP partisans. Together, we stand united against the election of Barack Obama in 2012. Most people do not give a wit about the “inside baseball” stuff. Let Jeff explain to his niece about “where he was when Obama put her into massive debt. Putting our financial burden on the tab of future generations is the ultimate form of taxation without representation.

    Petz: This is not about schaudenfreude (sp?), this is about the vicious (got it that time) acts of a “power” elite going so far as to threaten the livelihoods of FELLOW party members because they dare to question policy or run for office; even an office in a club. That is why I am a proud member of the Green Party. I can’t find any other members locally so we can’t treat each other poorly.

    Dave took an innocent sitution, and ascribed all sorts of evil interpretation to it. This isn’t journalism, it’s fiction. SCOPE meetings are indeed open to the public, and they are typically noticed on the website well ahead of the meetings. I manage the website for SCOPE as time allows. The lack of currency is a result of my not having time to update it regularly for the past few months. I had been taking care of my ill father in his final days; he passed in mid-July and my time has been rather hectic as I take care of his estate and related matters. I also started a new job this month and have been out of the state training for half of the month. The website has had to take a distant third in my life priority list at the moment. But Dave described this situation as some sort of consiracy to leave the public out of the organization’s activities. Do he still believe this is so? Will he print a retraction? According to his own column, Lynne offered to specifically contact Dave when the date is set, and also made it clear that if he desired to make a presentation that he could discuss this with her. Where is the deceit he alleges? As for his views on Newhall Ranch, he completely misrepresents both the intent and actualization of SCOPE’s actions to improve the development to protect both the environment in and around the river, and also the financial well-being of the community by raising issues of public infrastructure and other costs that the developer alone should bear, not those who currently live here. I posted this same informaoint on his website, so I hope he reconsiders his libeling of SCOPE and the reasons for the meeting confusion, in a future column.

    Class sizes have NOT remained that small. Ms. Marashlian’s reporting is (as usual) inaccurate, out of date, and poorly researched. The numbers she quotes for local districts are from 2009-2010. The majority of teacher layoffs occurred at the conclusion of the 2010 school year, when funding fell off the proverbial cliff. Class sizes increased for 2010-2011, and from what I’m seeing around my school/district, appear to have gone up again this year for 2011-2012. Some elementary class sizes are approaching 40. I don’t know about Castaic, but I can tell you that Saugus and Newhall district class sizes are not at that 09-10 level in 11-12. And this kind of reporting is all we need to feed that “See, they can do just as well with less!” thing that is happening around the country right now.
