  • Eric Earle, the suspect/person of interest in the death of his live-in girlfriend Karla Brada, has been released from jail “due to insufficient evidence.” Detectives are awaiting further tests on Brada; meanwhile a Deputy tells the Signal he’s not a flight risk SIGNAL
  • How would you like it if the 50 year old man who was convicted of molesting your son showed up on your street one day with no notice? A mom in Canyon Country is going through that right now- the Department of Corrections did not notify her that William Babb was released from prison SIGNAL
  • There are Cougars in Valencia? Wow! A mountain lion was spotted yesterday in North Valencia near Copperhill Road SIGNAL
  • Temperatures could hit 107 today in the SCV. Energy use was the highest its been in 2011 yesterday across SoCal ABC 7
  • Amazon and California have reached a deal for online sales tax. Looks like implementation will be delayed until next year, pending something on the federal level which might at least allow Amazon and other e-tailers to handle one tax rate across all 50 states LA TIMES
  • Lots of 9/11 remembrance events in the SCV, starting tomorrow and continuing through the weekend. KHTS Also, a local film maker is screening his new film which is a fictional account of an American man and Pakistani child thrown together on 9/11 SIGNAL Finally, the New York Times has newly released audio transcripts from inside the airplanes. They’re gut wrenching to read. NY TIMES
  • Buck McKeon wants the US to keep at least 10,000 troops in Iraq indefinitely. “We’ve won there, we should not give up that victory,” he said NEWS
  • The City of Santa Clarita is holding a community photography contest. Photogs and hobbyists head over to CITY BRIEFS

  • Tony Miano, the preacher cop you occasionally see hanging out on the street with a cross, pens LTE in which he blames the recent double murder/suicide on mankind’s fallen nature. LTE
  • Petz wonders what local Muslims are doing to remember 9/11. Probably hanging low to avoid people like Petz RIGHT ON SCV

    Why is it important to Petz to know what American (or not) Muslims are doing to remember 9/11? If they were to publicly announce how they were honoring the thousands of lives lost on that tragic day, including many Muslims lives, would that change the mind of many who believe being Muslim means you believe in terrorism and the killing of innocent people? http://islam.about.com/od/terrorism/a/Muslim-Victims-Of-9-11-Attack.htm “For example, the mother and other family members of American Airlines flight #11 passenger, Rahma Salie, were barred from traveling to her memorial service. Her mother, Haleema, said, “I would like everyone to know that she was a Muslim, she is a Muslim and we are victims too, of this tragic incident.”” I don’t believe that an announcement in the newspaper about how the Muslim community is honoring those who died on that day, would cause anyone who is ignorant or hateful towards this religion, would change their minds about them.

    The facts do not change that millions of muslims hate America and Israel. Their religion is largely intolerant of those who do not adhere to it’s teachings. Try to open a synagogue or church in Saudi Arabia. Petz likes Perez-Perez recognizes that there are deep problems among his fellow believers. Petz will not pander to be politically correct, or try to believe things that just aren’t so. If there are so many September 11 events commemorating September 11-and condeming the terrorists then they need to get a better PR firm.

    But those millions tend to be overseas and are not US Citizens. Let’s focus on what happens in our borders and treat ALL of our citizens equally and not just those who may look or believe like us. Yes its true that Saudi is an intolerant country but every President has befriended them and yet we have people like politicians who marginalize moderates. Wonder why we still have problems? And for the record Petz, the Islamic Center in Santa Clarita does not have a facility right now so they couldn’t do a service right now if they wanted to. I don’t know about the Unity Center but I can always ask for you.

    But let me ask you this, on a day commemorating 9-11 why do we have as American Muslims have to spend it denouncing terrorists or making apologies? On December 7th are you going to demand Japanese-Americans denounce the attack on Pearl Harbor? German-Americans the horrid crimes of the Holocaust? Or since we aren’t being politically correct, does America have a day they recognize the genocide against the Native Americans inhabitants or slavery against the Africans? Why can’t it be a day that we come together of ALL religions, races, ethnicities, and political persuasions and try to squash these so called differences? We can all talk a big talk but how many of us actually reach out minus online words?

    That’s a headache I wouldn’t want to deal with. There is one though in Palmcaster and they have to deal with some serious vitriolic comments, and that is just by their town’s politicians.

    Or more to the point, how about the Tennessee community that has done everything imaginable to stop the building of a mosque in their town? An intolerant “Christian” complaining about the intolerances of other religions is just ridiculous. And yes, I use quotes because I do not consider intolerance to be a Christian value. Certainly wasn’t one of Christ’s – except when he was intolerant of religious leaders who thought they could speak for him.

    Petz, you and I have had this discussion before and lvogel covered some of what we discussed in the above post but I will entertain you for a quick minute. Tomorrow I will be on Joe Messina’s show discussing 9/11 from an American Muslim’s perspective. Other than that, there are a MULTITUDE of events scheduled by the Muslim community in Southern California. They involve everything from interfaith work to feeding the poor to ceremonies honoring those who gave their lives. If you want, I can Facebook you a Group that you can Friend and see the many different community activities we are involved in both this weekend and throughout the year.

    JP I may ask questions or offer an opinion but you have already answered the most important question for me, you are an American whom practices the Muslim religion and your loyalty is to the United States of America. Hooahh..

    I think it depends on the questions being asked. I don’t want to waste time discussing the Daniel Pearl murder as an example because how is that relevant to 9-11 or American Muslims?

    Yes, there are mountain lions/cougars in “North” Valencia, as well as Saugus and Canyon Country, says my friend who volunteers at the “big cat” sanctuary called Shambala. She says that the mountain lions are coming down into suburbanized areas in search of water, because by now the water sources up in the mountains are very dry from the summer heat. Her neighborhood, which I won’t disclose at her request, had a female mountain and cubs in residence earlier this year, in a very steep, tree covered common area. Mom and the cubs could come down and drink water at the HOA’s green grassy flat areas which are sprinklered. That same common area has sheltered mother coyotes and pups for years, but obviously the female mountain lion was the superior predator, so the coyote moms moved elsewhere this year. My son bought a house with a lush bush and tree covered backyard which had been vacant for 6 months. When he and his wife held their “house warming party” all of us were standing in the family room, looking at the back yard, when a bobcat casually strolled across the top of the fence! A very kind man I knew 10 years ago, who was an animal control officer working out of Castaic told me that he had to leave a phone call because he had an emergency “Meals on Wheels” situation. When I asked what that was, he quickly said “Mountain lion waiting at school bus stop in a canyon in Castaic”. The bottom line is that if you have a cat who lives outside, the cat is prey and you cannot do anything about the risk except keep the cat inside. Similarly a small to medium sized dog who is fenced in yard is potential prey for a mountain lion, if you are anywhere near a wild open space. If you let the dog go in the yard to do their business, stand there and watch over them. Don’t leave them to fend for themselves. The same is true for small children playing in a yard backing up to wild lands, however so small the open space. Santa Clarita is at the edge of a vast wilderness, and that will never change. Instead, people have to adapt.
