  • The City’s Arts Commission will decide on an “artistic element” that will be at the center of the new Newhall round-about, which will be built at the intersection of Newhall Avenue & Main Street. New renderings of the round-about and details at SCVNEWS
  • Jeff Stenroos, the LAUSD cop who shot himself, prompting a $330,000, 10 hour police manhunt for a suspect, found guilty on five of six counts by a judge in Van Nuys Superior Court. LA TIMES
  • Sad: a 15 year old girl died when the car she was travelling in on Highway 126 between Fillmore and Santa Paula drifted across the road and slammed head-on into another car. The 17 year old driver of the car survived SCVNEWS
  • An abandoned black briefcase left behind at the Newhall Metrolink station raised the suspicion of security guards there yesterday. But it turned out to be nothing KHTS
  • Reminder: City Council meeting tonight. The biggest topic will likely be the LMD ballot, which you can read about at KHTS
  • County’s Draft EIR for One Valley One Vision now available at the Agua Dulce and Castaic libraries SIGNAL
  • Hart District parents want it all, but do they want to pay for it? The Signal says parents would like to see lacrosse, water polo, ice hockey and wrestling added as official sports in the SCV SIGNAL
  • Harvest time for southland farms, which means incredibly crunchy and deliciously juicy apples from Ha’s Apple farms at the COC Farmer’s Market SIGNAL
  • Legislature may delay community college fee hikes until next summer SIGNAL
  • Nearly 1/3rd of voters in the new 38th Assembly District reside in Ventura County, which could potentially affect how Patricia McKeon and Scott Wilk campaign for the Assembly VC STAR
  • Dr. Lee Rogers, a podiatrist running for Buck McKeon’s seat in Congress, appears to be a real candidate. He actually has a campaign website and has been speaking to local voters. He says his top priorities are to save Medicare, end the wars in Iraq & A-stan, and grow the economy LEE ROGERS
  • A new film by Hart graduate and CalArts instructor named Mike Ott is getting a lot of buzz from critics. The film, “Littlerock,” portrays a brother and sister from Japan who end up in a dusty corner of Los Angeles County. The film (I hear) has shots from Newhall’s annual 4th of July parade and elsewhere in the SCV. Roger Ebert has a great review and has given it 3 stars. Ott also made Analog Days a few years ago, which was filmed entirely in Newhall EBERT
  • LTE writer says some jerk put a cat scratch post in a local park with a “Free” sign. I can top that. How about discarded & used baby diapers in parking lots? Seriously LTE

    As a teenager who played Water Polo at the magnificent Burbank High School, we were relegated to participate not in the Foothill League (thanks a ton for stealing our league name, btw) which we were members for all other sports, but to the geographically spread Altamont League which featured such fine schools as: – Alhambra – Bell Gardens – Burbank – Burroughs – Montebello – Santa Fe Springs Ahh yes. Oh, and it also moved us into one of the hardest divisions for playoffs too. That was super cool getting tossed out in the first round. I’d like for there to be Water Polo in the SCV…. its a great sport, and widely played in SoCal… Ice Hockey? Lacrosse? Not so much.

    Burbank High got phased out of the Foothill league, probably due to excessive losing. IIRC, weren’t y’all paired up with Burroughs in some sports? Until I was 12, I grew up in Philly and on the eastern seaboard, lacrosse is huge. They even have professional teams. Since moving here, I’ve never seen so much as a lacrosse stick. When I visit the area now, you can pick out a lacrosse player easily. Somewhere between a tight end and a linebacker. (most lacrosse players prefer in that way #snap)

    Word on the street was that Burroughs and Burbank desperately needed to leave the Foothill League because they were taking dangerous PHYSICAL beatings on the football field, primarily due to size dispartities. In one of the final Burroughs games at VHS a Burroughs kickoff returner was knocked OUT COLD with about 92 seconds left. Since the game was out of reach and it would take about 30 to 40 minutes to remove him safely from the field, the Burroughs coach thankfully asked for the game to be ended right then.

    Burbank and Burroughs left because Hart Union kicked em out once they amassed enough schools in their own district for their own league. But really, it makes more sense for Burbank to be in the Pacific League with the Glendale and Pasadena schools… and thats how it should have been all along. But yeah theres always been a problem with the semi-professional sports attitude of the SCV vs the Burbank or even the AV schools. Going way back, we had always heard that Hart in particular was busted numerous times for illegal transfers and “recruiting” of students from outside the district. Doesn’t change the fact… Water Polo is a SoCal/West Coast sport. I played in school and for a club (Harvard Westlake no less!) in HS and I played club @ ASU… and I’d like to hope someday that my incubating daughter may play at a school in the SCV…

    I was surprised the signal actually mentioned the COC farmers market. The city and the paper seem to deny it’s existence. And Ha’s (at the COC market) has had Fuji’s for at least 6 months. There is no better apple and they are available dried.

    I was told by the produce manager at Ralph’s on Sunday that they didn’t have Fuji’s because they were out of season. Thanks for letting me know where to find some.

    they are available, if not exactly in season. Ha’s has a cold storage unit in (i think) Santa Paula, which allows them to hold the apples quite a while after picking. They have apples almost year round. Their Fujis are expensive, but incredible. Much better than what you find at any grocery store.

    You are right, they are incredible. We used to buy the pack of fujis at Costco, but stopped when I had a Ha’s apple. Nothing compares to them. Interesting about the cold storage. There are about 2 months out of the year when they do not have fuji’s. Right now they also have bartlett pears. Just waiting for them to ripen a bit more before I give them a try.

    I thought that teens aren’t allowed to drive other teens until they’re 18… wasn’t that the recent law????

    I think that law applies to 16 and 17 year olds.

    Right, so the 17 year old driver with the 15 year old passenger, per the story… so this would apply, no?

    It might depend on how long he/she had been driving. Also siblings are exempt.

    Your also not supposed to drive without a license, but many never get caught. Your also not supposed to speed, but many never get caught. Point is, the laws are there, but you can’t check on everyone.

    Oddly enough, LA Times had a story about how the new restrictions aren’t effective overall. Apparently it just shifts the death rate from 16 and 17 year olds to 18 and 19 year olds. But the issue was pointed out… apparently the restrictions I mentioned are only effective for a 1-year probationary period. Pass probation, and all your restrictions (including the age that you’re allowed to drive around with in the car) are removed.

    And I’ll raise your discarded and used baby diapers, Jeff! How bout surgical gloves on McBean (near the hospital), which I have no idea if they were used or not. And just yesterday, yes yesterday, a little plastic bag of weed (on the sidewalk), at Valencia Glen Park? Oh yeah, I forgot a few years ago I came across a condom (don’t know if it was used, but definitely discarded). Litter is my pet-peeve. I will usually pick up trash that will not decompose (bottles, plastic, metal) on my walks. This stuff gets sent to our sewer system, which gets sent to our ocean.

    As to the new Assessment District, it’s the same old story: http://www.hjta.org/propositions/proposition-218/closing-assessment-loophole-proposition-13 Of course, the City will not share its research on how and why these new assessments comply with the California Constitution aka Propositions 218 and 13.

    How about putting a statue of William S. Hart in the roundabout? It is at/near the entrance to Hart Park and “Old Town Newhall”, Western Walk of Fame and all.
