  • Assemblyman Smyth is undecided on whether to seek a State Senate or Congressional seat. On the Congressional side, Smyth wouldn’t challenge McKeon but would wait and see if Ventura Rep Elton Gallegly decides to run. Citing uncertainty over whether State Senate district lines will change, Smyth is waiting (and in the meantime has raised north of $70k for a State Senate bid). Tony “Hoops” Strickland and Sharon Runner, meanwhile, are in for 2012 reelection to their respective Senate Districts SIGNAL
  • Paul Strickland (no relation to Hoops) is in: the Hart Board Member, district rep for Cameron Smyth, and film industry vet is joining the race for 38th Assembly District against Pat McKeon and Scott Wilk. Strickland paints himself as a moderate in a long profile at KHTS, saying he admires his boss Cameron Smyth’s ability to analyze issues and make smart decisions. KHTS
  • Strickland will take a leave of absence from Cameron Smyth’s office while he runs for his bosses’ seat SIGNAL
  • Runner says to pack heat: State Senator Sharon Runner, in criticizing Gov. Jerry Brown’s  plans to transfer state prisoners to County jails, tells the public, “Now is the time for Californians to get a dog, buy a gun and install an alarm system.” SCVNEWS
  • Next Wednesday, the County of LA will consider approval for its One Valley One Vision document. Leon Worden tells you what that’s about and asks City planners what they think about the County’s half of the document (the City has already approved its OVOV doc) SCVNEWS
  • After being rejected by one local elementary District, Home school parents will ask the Saugus Union School district to approve a charter school to which home-school families can send their children. SIGNAL
  • Speaking of schools, The Master’s College has broken the 1000 student enrollment mark for the first time. 1,017 students are enrolled for the 2011-2012 school year at the sleepy college in rural equestrian Placerita Canyon SIGNAL
  • West Ranch High school students have gone beyond the traditional high school newspaper and are publishing their own magazine and website now. Impressive! KHTS, PAW PRINT
  • The City would like to take over maintenance of Sierra Highway from CalTrans so long as CalTrans improves the current state of the road, which is, by most accounts, deplorable. Potholes, ruts and cracks abound on Sierra Highway from Newhall Avenue to Friendly Valley Parkway, the section of the road which the state controls. SIGNAL

  • Buck McKeon will host, for the second time, a fair to show off and talk about killer robots, aka military drones, in Washington DC SCVNEWS
  • DownwithTyranny Blogger ponders Dr. Lee Rogers’ chances against Congressman McKeon. “The new 25th CD should have quite the spirited debate this year. Rogers, who we’ll be hearing from in greater depth later this week, isn’t one to shy away from a fight.   • Speaking of Buck McKeon, word is local establishment Republicans are selling “Birthday Roast” tickets for his Deputy Chief of Staff, Bob Haueter. Want to sponsor a table at the roast? Only $1,500. Or if you want to go by yourself and laugh at Bob, that’ll be $75. Takes place October 19 at Robinson Ranch.
  • Signal news #1: Ray Bowden, a journalist who has served in the military, joins the Signal as a reporter. Some good stuff so far. Welcome to the SCV Ray!
  • Signal news #2: Signal Alum Jonathan “Bearded Liberal” Randles, former ace crime beat scribe, joins Law360, a publication that focuses on the courts. He’ll be working out of the firm’s LA offices. Congrats Randles! PR
  • More ugly Signal history: Not only has the Signal supported the KKK in the past, but it also wrote in support of “beating up” 7th Day Adventists, the internment of Jews in WW2 and it trashed Mahatma Gandhi. That and more in today’s TIME RANGER
  • Yes! I’m a zombie fiction fan and so I really appreciate the theme for the City’s October Senses party in Old Town Newhall: ZOMBIES!

    Really nice reporting by Jim Holt this AM on Smyth & Co. $70,000 in the bank for a 2012 run? Who knew? Smyth taking on Tony or Sharon might be the most awesome race to watch next year. And Strickland? Can’t say I understand, as it seems Wilk already drank his milkshake with endorsements but he could play spoiler. One way or another, it makes a Wilk/McKeon general election less likely. I don’t know the first thing about the voting preferences of Mormons in the SCV, except that there is a heavy preference for Mormon candidates. On the rightward side of SCV politics, I don’t know of a more monolithic group. Will Strickland take some of that away from McKeon? I suspect not, but maybe an LDS’er here can shed some light.

    Jeff, it is my understanding that John Boston makes up some of his Time Ranger stuff for the comedic value.

    Paul Strickland is a very nice man with a distinguised record of service to the community .We welcome his entry into the race as a Republican candidate and wish him the best. If this is his dream-let him follow it.

    Gracious Petz but as a pragmatic midwesterner I am basically against undertakings that require substantial effort and will come to naught, especially since this has now impaired Paul Strickland’s cash flow which I don’t think he planned on.

    Out of character for me, but he is so thoughtful, nice and well mannered that I just can’t bring hype myself to a defcon level. We would hate to see Sacramento change him. How’s that ?

    The popular rumor is that Cameron has a nice corporate gig all lined up so we must dismiss any rumors of him running for office. Young family so he needs to stay home and earn $$$$$. His support for Jerry Brown has turned off Tea Party foot soldiers.

    I don’t know if he “supports” Brown but is instead more pragmatic than the typical party line, vote in unison approach all too common in Sacramento.

    Petz has just been made aware of a violent video game release call Tea Party Zombies Must Die……..it is inappropriate for Newhall to have any type of festival that celebrates death and Zombies during this sensitive time. Shocking that they would celebrate with Zombies after the terrible episode when one was nearly killed in a traffic accident.
