November 3, 2011 Daily Brief-Laurie Ender Can Sleep at Night Edition!

  • Laurie Ender must have been tossing and turning at night worried about the Facebook mooted city council candidacy of one Atom! Freeman, the man with the exclamation point in his name, so Natalie Everett from the Signal went to get to the bottom of it.  Not satisfied with Atom!’s protest of no real interest in office Ms. Everett points out that Atom! does not understand the difference between the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley.  Additionally, Atom!’s goal of 5,500 “likes” would not be enough to win a seat, and he only has 290 likes anyway.  Rest easy Laurie!

    (I seem to remember that this Facebook page began its life before the LAST city council election.  Anyone remember?)

  • Three days on and we still do not know the name of the victim of Halloween’s daylight shooting in Canyon Country, but the Signal does the next best thing  (sarcasm) by talking to condo complex residents in the area to which the suspects fled who relate a harrowing tale of “broken windows” and “just a matter of time.”
  • Edward Headington of the SFV decides to run in the open primary for 38th Assembly as a Democrat.  (Like many Edward thinks he is running for the Democratic nomination, but in the open primary format everyone runs, everyone votes, and the top two go to a runoff.)

    For what its worth, background on Headington makes him look like a younger, Democrat clone of Scott Wilk.

  • Nasty LTE  from Leona Valley (Are they in the Santa Clarita Community College District?) laying ALL the blame for slashed budgets, waiting lists and delayed graduations at Scott Wilk’s feet.  I guess the two other incumbents seeking reelection had nothing to do with it, and certainly not a California State budget meltdown!

    Anyone from any area in California can attend COC. There are no residency requirements. There are no registration preferences that I know of for the folks who live locally and who are paying off the debt that COC took on for expansion. Inability and difficulty to get needed classes has been a huge concern I’ve heard over and over from the SCV folks who go there. While it is great to grow the college, it would be nice to somehow reward the local community with at least priority registration since they are footing the bill for a very significant part of the expansion.

    Tim, I don’t see anything where Edward suggests he’s running for the Democratic nomination, aside from the Holt’s lead. It would seem that it’s the reporter’s mistake, not the candidate’s.

    Daily News print edition yesterday listed the deceased in the Canyon Country shooting as Alejandro Sanchez Torres. Reporter talked to his girlfriend. Not sure the DN story is posted online, but I have the hard copy in front of me.

    Yeah, Leona Valley is in the Antelope Valley Community College. The letter writer is quite delusional, but I expect nothing less from a Signal LTE.

    Breaking news in homage to El Jefe the Great…. Amgen Tour skips Santa Clarita in 2012, instead opting to build a stage from Palmdale up to Big Bear. In May, that could be one helluva gruesome stage, with desert heat on the way up to punishing altitude. Yikes. Thats really too bad. My wife and I have enjoyed going out to root on the riders… I guess we could head to Palmdale now, or catch the final stage in Downtown LA. Guess the whole “finish in the hometown of the title sponsor” didn’t work out so well this year, huh?

    I attended the finish this year and, by the look of it, the turnout was pretty big. Certainly my casual observation might not tell the whole story, but the finish area was lined 3-4 deep and all of the vendors seemed pretty busy. I will also miss having it in our city but, in the tradition of European Grand Tours, you have to move it around year to year. I would love to brave it and see the Big Bear finish but I bet traffic will be horrendous. I’ll probably camp out at my daughters in DTLA for the big finish. I’ll be within walking distance.

    Tough sell for Amgen to sponsor the ride in a year in which they are laying off 300 employees.

    Normally you’d think so, except the tour is TREMENDOUS in terms of exposure for Amgen. World wide exposure. They did sign a new contract this year through 2013, but from what I hear, its at a far lower dollar figure than in the past, and also has several out clauses, including one for any sort of doping scandal happening.

    Petz is looking forward to the major announcement at the SCV Patriot meeting tonight that will be the biggest shake up in the SCV since Northridge.
