  • Eric Edwards, Branden Higgs, and Diamonte McGhee–the 17-year-olds involved in the robbery and fatal shooting in Canyon Country–will be tried as adults.  (Perhaps that’s why the names of these minors have been published?)  There are more details on Alejandro “Alex” Torres, the deceased victim, as well.  It seems he had just gotten his life in order before being shot in his attempt to stop the robbery.  LA DAILY NEWS
  • A fund has been set up to help the family of Alex Torres.  KHTS
  • Craig Ingraham, the former City building inspector facing seven felony bribery charges, missed his earlier court date because he was in the hospital, he explained to a judge.  His warrant has been rescinded.  SIGNAL
  • Agenda for Tuesday’s City Council meeting has been released.  It should be a quick meeting.  They just have to give $60K in advertising to the auto-dealers (Flemwatch Alert), ponder a park-and-ride expansion, and consider annexing property in the Sand Canyon area. CoSC AGENDA

    How do 17 year old high school students (presumably) get access to handguns in Santa Clarita? Do we even care anymore as a society, or have we just given up on gun control as a tool?

    What kind of gun control will keep guns out of the hands of criminals who shoot people? Criminals don’t abide by laws. I would question what the parents of those 3 “kids” were doing to prevent those kids from getting to the point where armed robbery was a valid option.

Were these kids, and that’s what they were, hardened criminals before Halloween? The outrage and sadness over this case is understandable…that no one even asks how they get a hold of a handgun at 17 years old in the SCV is odd.

    I asked that very question. What in the heck are 17 year old kids doing with a gun and how did their parents not know they were armed and dangerous? If these guys have committed strong-arm robberies or whatever the legal term is before, how do the parents explain the kid showing up with new stuff? One answer is because some of these kids have parents and grandparents who are/were gangbangers themselves and have zero respect for the life or property of another. I admire Mr. Torres for intervening to help someone else and teaching his son that you do not stand by and watch a crime committed against another without taking action to help. It appears as though Alex was trying to get his life together again for his son’s sake. My heart goes out to the young son and Alex’s family. Alex is in a better place now, rest in peace.

    Why did you only quote part of my post? The second part speaks directly to what you said. I doubt the statistics show that kids with a healthy family life, supportive partners, etc grab a gun and rob someone. Furthermore I suspect parents that know what their kids are up to know when something “odd” is going on, like when they are going to rob someone. And I also suspect that kids just don’t go from happy/fun/friendly/nice to hardened criminals in one misplaced gunpoint robbery. I lived in the apartments on Jakes Way. I know what kind of element is predominant over there, it is no surprise to me that this happened there. Several shots fired calls in the year I lived there and my ride along with SCV SD brought us to that area almost right away. Bert’s explanation of the possible parenting profile is also, most likely, spot on.

    Jeff, Based upon the numerous arrest reports I have read, usually you can by a gun on the street for about $150. Also, dealers exchange it for drug sales, then turn around and sell it. Also more times than not (based upon reports I have read, which included the paperwork on the gun check) the guns recovered have usually been reported stolen. Chances are the juveniles arrested have a criminal history. I recently read an arrest report (for my job) inwhich a juvenile age 14 was arrested for attempted murder and I’ve read reports, where juveniles as young as 13 are dealing/transporting drugs.

    Somehow I do not think that yet more gun laws would have prevented this. There was a law against them possessing the gun and (presumably) carrying a concealed gun and those laws did no good. There was a law against robbing the guy too and they disregarded that as well. The only people that will obey the laws are law abiding citizens that follow the laws.

    IIRC, the city makes 1% on each car sale, so any advertising paid by the city has to have a negative ROI. $60,000 worth of advertising would have to convince hundreds of people to buy a car in Santa Clarita instead of elsewhere. A tough sell, considering the generally inflated prices at the dealerships up here. A buyer who is aware of the an incentive to shop elsewhere (a better price offer) will be very difficult to sway. It’s a useful line for the dealers to use in the context of their wider campaigns, but they can recover their costs much more quickly.

    Tsk-tsk, Mike; you didn’t read the whole agenda item. They explain away your concerns without all the confusing numbers. “FISCAL IMPACT: As proposed, this Shop Local Program will have a positive fiscal impact to the City by increasing overall auto sales and subsequent tax revenues to the City.”

    Mike: The breakeven point is actually about 200 additional cars, or about four a week, which is probably attainable but also virtually unprovable since the data series would be difficult to control for other factors. The irony is that the overwhelming majority of car dealers are active in Republican politics and they don’t see the irony in sticking out their hands for every municipal handout that comes along.

    And the Republican oriented Council has no problem giving the money to them because it’s “good for business”. There is a cost to being known as the most business friendly City in the County. One big incestuous web.

    No matter what the city does or says, some of you will take issue. Support local business so they can generate more local tax revenues, you object. Hire outside businesses contractors/consultants even if their bid is lower, you object. Bring services under local control, you object. Etc etc etc… All I know is that the facts are that we live in a city that has since Dec 15, 1987 had an on time and balanced budget. Folks are still interested in moving here and locating their businesses here despite our current lousy economy. Fiscal responsibility does not occur without effort and leaders willing to make the correct decisions just ask the folks who live in Bell! I only wish our state and federal government were as prudent with our money as our city is. I appreciate the fact that our city does whatever it can to help businesses and residents. We are privileged to live in a beautiful, well-run city. Are there a few things we can do better, sure but complaining is not getting them done. My two cents worth, to all of you constant whiners shut up already, you are free to move elsewhere…

If you think too many people are only interested in criticizing and whining on this board, then why are you back? Was it just a bit too boring over at Right on SCV?

As far as I know, I still have the right to opine according to our Constitution, you do not have to agree, nor do I request or require your permission to express my views.

    It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. I know you’ve been back for a few weeks. You actually had a few posts that I agreed with. But not this one.     Interestingly, I heard that the Chevrolet dealer in Santa Paula actually sells more cars than the Chevy dealer in the SCV because of price and internet access. That is the future.

    We bought a chevy 2 1/2 years ago. I gave SCV dealership the first shot, but I ended up buying it in Burbank – and saving about 3K…

    Because you asked, a long-time reader/rare poster will say that I’ll be running the half-marathon Sunday. I’ve run it once before in 2009. The course is a nice path-of-least-resistance through industrial parks and paseos. At one point, it even passes through an apartment building parking lot. As a runner it’s a fine, mostly flat course, but it is obviously designed to avoid any upsetting of daily Santa Clarita life. (Runners are even told to park on the fifth floor of the mall parking garage so that shoppers aren’t inconvenienced.) Because of all this, there are some long, desolate stretches with no spectators in sight. Please come out and keep us all from being too lonely.

    It’s in the Santa Clarita Bill of Rights that our ability to drive 60mph on McBean & Valencia Blvd shall not be infringed under any circumstances, be it bike races, marathons, or 4th of July fireworks celebrations. So, uhh, yeah watch out for the puddles (just assume it’s pee) in the high density apartment parking lot and enjoy your run!

    I believe Petz is hinting at the fact that African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans have a history of racial/ethnic discord. The victim was Hispanic. The suspects are African-American.

    Why thank you Petz, I will take that as a compliment! I am always interested in learning the facts and keeping an open mind about any issue. When folks provide all of the pertinent facts without omitting only the parts that do not favor their position and allow me to decide for myself whether I agree or not I will at least respect our differences, but when they intentionally spin things in order to sway others to support them I am inclined to speak up.

    I am ugly, really really ugly- just pick out the ugliest guy in the room and imagine that will be me if it makes you feel better. That’s why I whine and am so bitter. And by the way, I have plenty of confidence in my arguments. Did you hear the explosions in Canyon Country last night? Oh yeah… that was fireworks from the Canyon game.

    I am sure you are ugly given your disposition but as I said, I do not care what you look like. Funny that you should mention the fireworks because when I heard the first burst of “fire” I did think it was yet again nearby gunfire and reached for my phone to call the sheriff’s station. I only realized it was fireworks when I stepped into my back yard to gauge the direction of the sound and saw the pyrotechnic display light up the night sky. I think Canyon really should have apprised the community in advance that they would be shooting off fireworks especially given recent events because my heart certainly stopped for a few seconds…

    If you aren’t up for a 5k tomorrow – it is also the Assistance League’s annual fundraiser, Sunset in the Vineyard. A great event that brings together our local SCV vintners, along with a beer-meister, cheese maker and great company all for a great cause.
