The Affordable Care Act, the core of which was conceived by Republicans in reaction to HillaryCare in the 90's, stands on a 6-3 vote by the US Supreme Court. Individual mandate and all. It is a constituitional law afterall.
Three solid years of charges that it was a socialist plot, with our own congressman leading the charge, have been thoroughly put down by this 6 to 3 vote, with Chief Justice Roberts voting with the majority.
I'm on a bus rightnow and everyone is talking about it. One guy says hes going back to Armenia....he knows socialism and apparently thinks that a law that helps 30 million Americans buy insurance from private, for profit-insurers is socialist. Others are happy saying the everyone should have the same rights to healthcare that the elderly do. Others, the ones I've come to know as tea party types ard in despair and now pin their hopes on a full repeal of the law.
I look at it as the culmination of a 100 year struggle to progress our nation into modernity. We progressives are part of that struggle and have cause to rejoice today.From food safety regulations to occupational regulations to clean air and clean water regulations, and now, truly comprehensive health care legislation, progressives have made America a better place to live for everyone.
