August 7, 2012 Daily Brief - "Olympics as Treason" Edition

Dumb, dumb, dumb. LAPD motorcycle officer involved in accident over the weekend got clipped by a Mustang changing lanes. SIGNAL So far just an unfortunate accident but THEN Mustang decides to vamoose and driver is now wanted for felony hit and run. Dumb.

Its going to be a HOT (probably about) seven days with high pressure persisting over California and monsoonal moisture from the southeast to add humidity to the fun. SIGNAL Before people start reporting ASTOUNDING temperatures on their car thermometers please remember the following:1. For accurate ambient temperature readings thermometers must be at LEAST six feet above the ground to neutralize stored heat in concrete, for instance, and
2. Car thermometers are subject to reflected heat from the metal chassis.

Long story short, subtract about 6 to 8 degrees from your car reading for a more accurate view of temperature.

Not strictly local but Dick Cesaroni has a real cranky guest editorial about professionals, specifically basketball players, competing in the Olympics and how it has ruined the games and is the work of corrupt politicians. He reserves special disdain for Pau Gasol who is guilty of some form of minor treason by playing for his home country of Spain when he collects pay from the Lakers. SIGNAL I don't know Mr. C's age but I am going to start the over/under at 95! (Psst: Don't tell Mr. C that the most popular selling basketball jersey in CHINA is Kobe Bryant and there are some furriner's playing in MLB!)

I missed this one but it is important. California has removed 154 institutions of "higher learning" from CalGrant eligibility because of high federal loan default rates and low graduation rates. SCVNEWS Those rendered ineligible include well known strip mall and low rise universities ITT Tech, University of Phoenix, and local Charter College which advertises on screen in the "First Look" feature at Edwards Theater. The other local connection? For profit universities contributed heavily to Congressman McKeon when he chaired the Workforce and Education committee in the House.
