- KHTS' Mark Archuleta (with an assist from Carol Rock) has what's got to be the interview of the year with Congressman Buck McKeon, covering everything from the Bush tax cuts expiring, to sequestration cuts, to CEMEX (McKeon says he's putting together a town hall), to Countrywide, to McKeon trying to squirm his way out of committing to debate(s) with his opponent, Dr. Lee Rogers. - Antonovich Antics Continue: Supervisor Antonovich voted against putting Measure J -an extension of the County's half cent sales tax to fund transit projects- on the General Election ballot in November. If he had won, the measure still would have gone to voters, but "residents [would have] to cast their votes for president in one polling booth, and then go to a separate booth to decide the fate of Measure J." Three Supes decided that was ridiculous and Measure J will be on the General election ballot instead DAILY NEWS
- 16 year old Canyon Country boy arrested for holding a knife to a 14 year old girl's throat. Authorities don't know why he did it but the girl was unharmed SIGNAL
- LA City Council bans "skateboard bombing" in which youths jump on skateboards and go down steep hills at 40+ mph. Two teens have died recently doing it. DAILY NEWS
- A total of six rabid bats have been found in the SCV this year. Two rabid bats "were found clinging to the side of a home in Saugus."Authoritiessay you should be wary if you see bats flying around during the day time or dive-bombing children or pets when no food is present. SCVNEWS
- Someone at WRB (Dr. Gene Dorio, or perhaps Dave Bossert, there's no names on the posts) continues to post little horror stories about Mayo Hospital. Last week, an unnamedrespiratorytherapist intubated a baby incorrectly; this week, an ex-employee violates HIPAA laws as s/he scans patient records. WRB
- Real Life Church, perhaps the most innovative evangelical church in the SCV (complete with its own popular coffee bar, Undergrounds), is building shade, "sails" and lights over its amphitheater entrance. KHTSCVNEWS notes at buildout that the 1,000 seat amphitheater "will be one of only a few large covered outdoor venues in the SCV." KHTS
- Meanwhile, another SCV Christian institution, Santa Clarita Christian School, has hired new administrators for the school in a bid to increase competitiveness with other private schools in the SCV. SIGNAL
- Speaking of schools and the interesting story about for-profits in yesterday's Daily Brief, Bridgepoint, a corporate holding company whose properties include Ashford University, saw its shares decline 30% last month after the university was denied accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. WASC denied accreditation on the basis that Ashford spends more to recruit students than it does educate them and for its high drop-out rate YAHOO
- Gas prices in the SCV have risen 17 cents in a week thanks to a refinery fire in Northern California according to the SIGNAL
- I dig Gary Horton's column today in which he describes toy political action figures he's created: Romby -made out of petroleum products- and Obamby -made out of renewables. SIGNAL

- Housekeeping note 2: I went back to the old-style theme for the site as the new one was chewing up too much bandwidth and my hosting provider got mad. I've also optimized some database tables and removed some legacy plugins, so hopefully the site should perform a little better.
