I had a chance to test out the City's WiFi service on one of its commuter buses last week. One word summary: impressive!
Along my entire route in the San Fernando Valley, I was getting very high download speeds. I was able to watch YouTube videos, stream music from my Spotify app, and do all the usual emailing and RSS feed reading. I couldn't resist telling my fellow commuters about the service, and they all pulled out their iDevices and connected to the free service as well, many of them remarking how they could save time using the service.
Here were the download speeds I got while in the bus:
These are definitely 4G speeds, likely provided by Verizon since the speeds dropped off once we were in the SCV (where Verizon, sadly, has not implemented its 4G network yet).
The bus' WiFi network has no security enabled, so it's very simple to connect. When I first connected, there was only one other device on the mobile network. But after my whisper campaign to spread awareness, at least eight more users were online as well.
I hope this test proves successful for Santa Clarita Transit and I hope they'll implement free WiFi on more of their buses. The reaction I got from commuters was very positive.
