Just how badly will Barack Obama lose the SCV?
It's a silly question since we're in a state that's solid blue and a valley that's bright red, but it's still fun to ponder. And it's somewhat of a barometer of where the SCV is politically.
In 2008, astoundingly, Barack Obama came within a few hundred votes of winning the Santa Clarita Valley outright. Here's a chart I made four years ago after the Times posted election results by precinct:
The Times also posted maps showing where Obama votes were clustered in the SCV:
As you can see, Obama votes were clustered in Canyon Country, parts of west Valencia, and Newhall. The larger the dot, the larger margin of victory for Obama in that precinct. I love this map because it's so detailed. That big blue dot next to I-5 in Valencia? That's the tiny liberal haven of CalArts. That same precinct was one of the only ones that voted against Proposition 8 in 2008 as well.
Of course, 2012 is a whole different animal. I don't expect Obama will do nearly as well here as he did in 2008, largely because 2008 was something of a special case election and Republicans weren't enthused with McCain.
I'm predicting Romney 57, Obama 43 in the SCV in 2012.
